awesome another ps2-scene member!
If you buy the fliptop+swapdiscs, you won't even need to use that dinky no-solder modchip. _________________

Alright, let me summarize this, because this is just getting me angry now.
I have:
*A Version 4 U.S. Playstation 2 MODDED with a NO-SOLDER modchip that CAN'T play original import games
*DDR Extreme JP that I want to play
So, I'm getting a flip top. The questions are, will the fliptop FIT on the PS2 with the no-solder MODCHIP inside it, will the flip top WORK WITH the no-solder modchip (will the fliptop override the modchip?)[b], and finally [b]what EXACTLY should I get and WHERE should I get it.
People are telling me to get this kind of set, with the Swap Magic 3.3 disks. Is this correct?
And where should I buy it?
www.ps2cover.com?
www.ps2fliptop.net?
Someone help me, please. _________________

Getting a JPS2 is probably the easiest solution, but it certainly isn't the cheapest. The best combination of price, ease of use and performance is the fliptop lid, available from sites listed both on this page and the first page (presumably). For reference, here are instructions.
1. Before ordering your lid, check to see which model PS2 you have. The sites themselves tell you how to do this (mostly has to do with how many screws hold the thing together).
2. When you get your lid and your boot discs, put your PS2 on a clean, flat surface (ie. a table) and turn it over. Pop off all the screw covers and take out all the screws. Carefully turn the system back over and VERY GENTLY remove the lid. The power & reset buttons are set into a part that may be set into the top of the lid, so be sure not to rip the wires connecting them. This part can be popped off as well. (I think it was my older PS2 that did this when I installed the lid.) This, if you can believe it, is the tricky part.
3. The large rectangle you see before you is the drive cover. On each side are two tiny screws, for a total of four (4) tiny screws. Find a screwdriver capable of handling these and remove them. Remove the drive cover.
4. Take the little disc thing out of the top of the drive cover (this holds the disc in place when it plays) and put it into the lid. It doesn't matter if you break the disc tray while doing this; you won't need it. You can change over the memory card doors if you want, but this is unnessessary hassle. If you're that worried about dust, just leave memory cards in there. Once all this is done, snap the power and reset button part into place, if nessessary.
5. Put your new lid back down on top of the PS2. Turn it over and put the screws back in.
6. To play an import game, figure out if it's a CD or a DVD, and put the appropriate boot disc in the drive tray (doesn't matter how). When the program loads, open the lid and change discs. Be careful of the little lip on the rear side of the disc tray. Close the lid and press a button on the controller. Do not use the reset button to change to your import game; the point of the fliptop mod is to get around the region lockout that is installed on the reset button.
And as always, all controllers and memory cards are region free.

If you do the exact opposite of what the instructions tell you (for instance, yanking the lid off instead of gently removing it, stabbing the processor with your screwdriver instead of taking the drive cover off) you will probably inflict some damage you should not have inflicted. Other than that, it's almost foolproof.
The super-minimal risk is well worth what a fliptop lets you play. Japanese DDR mixes are only the beginning. Find some money and you can play Beatmania IIDX, Guitar Freaks and Pop'n Music too. This stuff is almost guaranteed never to appear on American PS2.

Hi! I have looked all over the place for the 4th mix and Extra mix protection fix patches, and I could not find them ANYWHERE. I bought the Breaker Pro boot disc and appearently it doesn't support boot codes for some reason or another. Plus, the Anti-mod Killer doesn't do anything. So, if someone were to be so kind as to help me find the patches I need or fix the boot disc situation, I would be very grateful. If anyone happens to have them, please PM me. Thank you for your help. |

Fliptops are the devil unless you have some experience in electronics. It's a lot more simple than soldering, but it can be a bitch to do. I modded my ps2 with a flip top and about a week later the controller ports died. If you want to install a flip top, be very careful, don't bend *any* wires, and just know that if it dies on you, most people who work on video game consoles will not fix it for you while you have the fliptop installed. |

Can somebody explain the difference in installing a modchip the stealth way and the standard way? I've searched the entire forum and found only that some games can detect standard and won't let you play, so you'll need stealth. Thx for the help. |

Well, most of the new modchips out now have stealth support. There's no difference in installations, you just turn off the modchip before playing the game.
Oh, can someone add these modchips to the Rip Off section of the ps2 modchips?
Matrix Infinity SE, Muppet Chip, Ripper IV, Neo Bright , TNTMod
These are all copies of certain modchips, when you attempt to change things in the options menu the chip dies completly. _________________

If you can solder and know how to work with resistors and other stuff there is a way to stop the pstwo from dying, however it won't be confirmed fully until the tests run for a few months.
Hands down the crystal chip is the best. _________________

You know when you play backups, supposedly it wears out the lazer. What would happen if I modded my ps2 just to play original imports, and never played backups on it? Would the lazer become weaker? And whats the best way to mod a pstwo without voiding the warranty and making the mod reversable? I'm thinking about thishttp://www.swapmagic3.com/Magic_Switch.htm. Would this be good to get? |

ya, swap discs are great, dont forget to buy the flip top tho. there is a trick to getting the swap disc to work everytime. take out your memory card and only put it in one the screen has turned blue. then it will work every time and you will never get the red screen again. _________________
