Hi,

I just joined the forum after lurking for about a month. I saw this thread and the accomplishments thread for us old farts and finally decided to join.

At age 47, I have found myself out of shape and in need of exercise but have wanted to do it at home. I knew about DDR so I thought I would give it a try.

For Christmas I was given a PS2, DDR Extreme and a dance pad. I already want a better pad, even though I am only just starting to pass Light level dances.

At first my legs felt like jello, but after playing DDR every day for at least 1 hour, my legs are feeling much better. I stop now when either I get too hot or my dance pad starts to act up from static.

I am looking forward to chatting with people with similar problems and concerns.

Hello costumer, I’m 47 too E15.gif
I found that better pad with thick inserts does help tremendously with your play (and much better on you joints) I heard some people are getting very nice thick pad with Warranty (extra cost) at Electronic Boutique. You should check it out. I Play DDR everyday so my pad does get lots of use. I got mine as gift so no warranty. Hope last long time…

Danburi,

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. I am debating truly upgrading my pad to one of the arcade type. I am currently lusting after a Cobalt Flux pad as I would rather spend my money once and not have to worry that every 3 or 4 months I am going to have to buy a new pad.

After my first few weeks of playing, my legs and feet are getting used to the workout so I don't really need think I need a squishy pad, just a really durable one.

C.

I really like my CF. I have never had any problems with it. I don't play particularly hard myself, but it gets a lot of use between me and my kids and their friends.

However, I've had my Pelican wireless pads for almost a year. They ripped after about 7 months of heavy use, but I've duct-taped them and they still work fine!

Oh well, with college tuition, baby coming and my son’s wedding, CF will not be top of my list for a while… E2.gif

The tournament was this past Saturday Jan 29th. It was quite amazing...read more below...

nnddrgirl - I entered a tournament in November to find out that all the light/standard players are really people who play all the time on Heavy but can't AA everything all the time like other Heavy tournament players can. So I got whupped immediately, but you know what - I had tons of fun. I finally met other people who are fanatical about DDR. No older adults, though, but you're not as old as me, so that's OK.

That was what the tourney was like. Yeah it was on standard BUT i guess it was similar to a PERFECT ATTACK tourny? not exactly sure how they did the scoring.

I do know that EVERYONE at the tournament could AA or AAA songs on heavy!!! It was insane. Definitly not a tournament for standard players. me and my partner were the 2nd team eliminated in a double elimination...My team member is what kept me alive to be eliminated 2nd...The other team eliminated was my sister and her partner (that she found the day of) I couldn't even pass the qualiying song (which just determined where on the brackets you went) It was Destiny Lovers on Heavy. I was 1 of 2 who got an E...1 person got a D 1 person got a C and 1 person got a B and the rest of them either got an A or a AA....IT was INSANE!!!

They totally needed a different skilll level for those players...hehehe....BUT none the less i had fun .TONS of fun!!! It was awesome to see such great players. I believe that a few of the players there were some of the best in the phoenix valley.. (imho) It was great. for the most part people seemed a little irritated that maybe I wasn't better? BUT it's okay. I got over it. My partner was very supportive of me. He'd go first an A a song and then i'd ruin it.. :(blah. BUT he was totally fine with it. He'd was more there to play than anything and to have fun. I was so happy. It was tons of fun!

okay...wow..I posted a lot on that..
THanks for your interest!

Hey. If anyone wants I keep a Lj if you'd like to read it PM me and i'll send you the link. Hehehe...Lately i've been posting how often i play ddr and stuff..and few other stuff as well .biggrin.gif if interested let me know...

Look at it this way... you must seem like a God to them E4.gif

I was at an arcade on saturday that had a ton of good players there... I only got one set in before it got TOO crowded... it was a little intimidating playing in front of people who were that good, but I just told myself, "You're an old fart, so they'll have zero expectations... just the fact that you're ATTEMPTING to play Heavy should be enough to surprise them" E4.gif
I ended up having a good set... A'd all four songs (two 7's, an easy 8 and an easy 9). The only bad part was that I had to use all 90 seconds between songs to catch my breath, which made me feel like I was holding up the coin line. E15.gif
There was one weird thing that happened... these guys are playing nothing but 9's and 10's, and the occasional tough 8, like Waka Laka... then for who-knows-what reason, these two guys played Freckles as their final stage. Maybe they were looking for an easy AA to get the Extra Stage? Anyway, not only didn't they get it, neither one of them even managed to get an A. It was like watching Michael Jordan miss a pair of free throws, and momentarily feeling superior because you just KNOW that YOU would've been able to make those free throws E4.gif

AuntieM,

Good to hear more good things about the CF. My current/first pad is a cheap (paid $15 on sale) Intec. I have to straighten out the wrinke on the underlayer before I can play or the up arrow doesn't work. As for the static problem, I took a dryer sheet and rubbed down both sides of the mat. I also now play in a pair of soft soled leather moccasins I had made, although I have to be careful not to step on the fringe with the opposite foot.

As for affording the CF, I would rather pay a lot of money once than have to keep forking out money over a shorter time period. Plus the household income tax return is coming soon.

laugh.gif Slowpoke, that very thing happened to me yesterday! The youngsters were thankfully not hovering but roaming around the arcade. Still they kept popping back to check my progress. I'm standing there panting, scrolling through the songs like I couldn't figure out what to play. So pathetic! Then when my turn came up next in the coin line, one of the kids came over and she was all, like, "Your turn," and I was all, like, "No, still catching my breath, go ahead." riiight.gif

BUT the good news is I AA'd something in front of them. Sure it was only Afronova Light (4-footer), but still since I've been playing 6's I haven't AA'd anything in a while so it looked and felt good! biggrin.gif

Isn't that wild? I hear tournaments for people who only play Light/Standard are called Novice tournaments. I'm still waiting for one of those. But I'm glad you had fun! E1.gif

at my arcade there are people of all ages. i saw a woman playing the other day and she was about 47-50. we also have a 4 year old that AAs almost every standard song on the machine. she is amazing! her legs are barely long enough to so the jumps and runs, it is so cute.

Myself, i'm only 21 still young enough not to look weird but almost weird enough to look too old.

OK; I didn't say anything yesterday, but I gotta say today - I can't believe a 4 yo would be able to play that well. My kids can A some Heavys at home and they're 9 and 7, but they can hardly beat Standard at the arcade. I mean freeze arrows? You can't get them too well if you weight 50 lbs. Four year olds weigh an average of 35 lbs and are only about 3.5 feet tall. So are you sure this kid is four?

Another thing - if a 4 yo can do that well, I must say that the parents are probably spending a lot of time at the arcade with the kid. I would think a 4 yo might be better off playing with toys and other kids than spending hours a week at the arcade. My kids usually play with friends, so it's not as if they're down in the basement by themselves, sweating obsessively for hours (like some of us). I don't mean to say that I'm a perfect parent, because I am most certainly not, but I can't think of developing a DDR talent in my kid at the expense of his/her normal development.

It starts feeling slightly awkward at 21 doesn't it? Especially since most people playing around you are at oldest barely in highschool >_> Snot nosed brats biggrin.gif

I play at a small arcade that does a lot of kids parties so i see many young kids playing but you also see the ocassional mom jumping onto the machine. I don't see many dads doing it though. What's up with that?

On a side note my boyfriend's mom loves the game and she's almost 50.

I think it's because men have a far greater fear of looking foolish than women do. It's all about ego.

Um, no well I used to listen to Smile DK, King Kong and D Jungle Girls as well as Captain Jack before DDr...

I feel awkward playing (I'm 24 yrs old) mostly because I'm a junior high teacher and I think its weird having your students outdo you or even see you on DDR.

Hey AuntieM!

I just did the most craziest thing today: Going to FIVE IN THE GROOVE Arcade Locations in one day! Started first going to the Tilt at the Galleria at Tyler, Riverside, CA at around 10 am. Then went to the Linbrook Bowling Alley in Anaheim at around 11 am. Then went to the Golf 'N Stuff, Norwalk at 12 pm. Then went to the Arcade World, Stonewood Center Mall, Downey at 12:30 pm. Finally ended up at the Glendale Galleria at 5 pm. Is that a trip or what? Please reply, over! Thanks!

Hey Temp-whats your total ddr/itg arcade count? Just curious. I don't have as much time for arrow stomping as I'd like these days but I still check in here once in a while.

Now THAT sounds like a fun day. I would love to try that sometime. I could easily hit 7 DDR locations in one day, I think. Now I've got a goal for my next day off as a mom. Thanks for the idea!

I think I'm too territorial for that. If I'm in a location and at a machine that I like, I don't wanna leave it E1.gif
