Pop'n 10 at home's gauge is about the same as 12's at the arcade. The rest of them at home are considerably easier, specifically 9's. Something like Anime Hero R EX is passable at home, but I doubt anyone in America could do it at the arcade >_<. |
Thank you. I'm playing p'nm 10 now, so I guess it's actually close to the real thing.
It's rather different from the other bemani games I've played anyway, in that you can entirely screw up some parts of a song without failing, and I wonder why things have changed so much passing from psx to ps2 (I somehow find animelo the hardest bemani I've played, while p'nm10 is very easy to pick up....), but surely I can live with it. |

Yes, you can buy an HDLoader. It's also rather cheap, provided you have a spare hard disk to connect to your ps2.
Too bad pop'n music 10 won't boot with it, but all the other titles do (best hits, p'nm from 6 to 9). |

You shouldn't bother anyway: HDLoader is not compatible with usb hard drives, and they would be awfully slow anyway (I think it would take minutes to load a game....).
Can't tell you where to find Swap Magic: have you tried looking on ebay? |

PS2s have USB 2.0 I don't think it would be that bad. _________________

Hey everyone.
So, I was wondering how I could get started with Pop'n'Music. I don't know where to get a PS2 mod right now to make it Japanese-game accessible, or where to get one of the actual games. (This assuming there aren't any American Pop'n games right now. If so then screw the import thing.) So, what do I need to get and where? I wanna try some other Bemani besides DDR and this is the first on my list. _________________

Use my modchip FAQ to learn how to mod your PS2, as all Popn is imported. The guide is a little out of date but the only important new modchips out are the DMS4 and the DMS4EZI, a nonsolder version of the DMS4. I highly recommend the DMS4EZI.
PlayAsia has a large number of Popn Music games
Popn Music 6 and down - From what I hear Popn Music 6 is the only one on Playstation worth getting. I played 6 a couple times, it was alright but Im spoiled by Popn 9
Pop'n Music 7 - I only played it once, its alright but Im spoiled by Popn 9
Pop'n Music 8 - Alot of people like this version, its got some awesome and then a lot of really bad ones
Pop'n Music 9 - Personally this is my favorite, not as many oh my god awesome songs as 8 but a WHOLE lot less really bad ones
Pop'n Music 10 - This one is alright, its got some good songs and some bad ones I'd get 9 and 8 first
Theres also Best Hits but I have no experience with that version
www.ransai.com and www.desktoparcade.com sell Popn Music ASC (which I think is the only way to go but you can always get a small controller from PlayAsia, but I dont see how it would be fun on the small controller.
Ransai and DA both play EXACTLY the same. The Ransai is thinner and you can get custom art on the DA so go with which ever you want. _________________

So what would be the best course of action to get this for less than five million dollars? Seems like a fliptop and Pop'n 9 and a small controller.
Edit: Pkay I get what a fliptop is now and I want to get one. So I'm gonna find out what model my PS2 is right now and figure out which one I need. Do all of them work with Pop'n? If so then I just need one to match my PS2 right? _________________

I read this topic a few days ago and was HIGHLY inspired.... but I'm also cheap.
I built mine out of a small sheet of plywood, and Legos. (Yeah, I saw the video, hence a bit of the idea) Take a Gander:
Thats it (Minus the part where I attatch the PS1 Controller... but you get the idea.
The Wiring... (I cut grooves in the frame, so it fed nicely without looking gross.
More wiring.. thats the 18 wires... 9 ground.. 9 positive... the 9 get turned into 1 with a wing-nut while soldering... but still... its a big spidery mess untill you're done.
And, I've been jamming it all day, the legos are crazy comfortable.. I used flashing, rather than mini-switches... some weather stripping for the button feel... I love it. If you guys need more pictures or questions.. post ahoy, but for now... I gotta play some 777 Hyper.... (That song is great)

hey !. As a big player of DDR ive just wanted to try pop'n'music. There is no arcade in my town and I would really like to have it at home and just wanted to know how your button are working. I made an homemade dance pad and know the weather stripping + screws method but if you got a better solution (for those "small" button) i would like to hear it.
Thanks ! _________________

Tried that new Pop 'N Music 12th style game at AI last Saturday night. That game ROCKS! Especially that Japanese girl playing the Extreme modes like it was nothing! No wonder why Ryan2dx gets a kick about playing that game! Is that a trip or what? Please reply, over! Thanks!

Yeah it's a trip, very fun . You should play.
And I will be at AI from like 5-7 on Sunday for some Pop'n.
And I still have no clue as to how the hell you can 86K Anime Hero R EX, Chubs.
But yeah I'll see people there. _________________

I haven't played 7 yet. But I do like some of the songs from that game that I played in other versions like Bali Trance, Des Reggae and Kyougeki. From the songlist though, a lot of songs don't have a hyper difficulty, mainly old songs.
9 is great. 9/10 for song selection. Maybe that will be different if I remember what all the songs sounded like, I recently got this, so I am still trying to remember every song I play.
10's songlist is even better than 9's in my opinion, but the default songlist isn't as great compared to 9's until you start unlocking songs. And unlocking everything is fustrating. Even with the annoying unlocking system, 10/10 for overall selection of songs.
I don't know what you should get first though. |

Any of them are good, but I'd probably recommend 10 out of them first. The difficulty there is a smidgen harder but it's more accessable music wise and it's honestly the best as far as the current home ones go. 9 is sorta meh but has some good songs, and 7 is the same way. It has a ton of classics but a lot of mediocre ones too. 8 is probably my favorite tied with 10, I'd get it too but you didn't mention it. _________________
