One time I was FSing Tsugaru standard. During the long pause about 1/4 of the way though the song, I do a handstand (back facing crowd) and put my feet on the bar to keep my balance (I can't hold a handstand for that long).

On this particular day, my feet missed the bar. The inside of my knees hit the bar then I slid down in between the two pads, hitting my hip on the edge of the pad. I needed to go to the doctor. hairline fracture. Haven't tried the move since.

nice. i was diggin it. the locking needs to be cleaned up like 100x though. the ideas were good, just gotta clean it up.

there's a tourney comin up soon here, beginner is allowed in FS. i might try to pull out some big stuff.

edit: actually. im not quite sure now if that was locking...? i didnt see The Lock anywhere...the Uncle Sams and Wrist Rolls just seemed like locking. please correct me if im wrong, and ignore the above statements if so.

i'll post when its over.

yeah well i can't dance all that well and thought up and memorized the dance in less than a week's time right before the tournament. Some of it is supposed to be locking and some is supposed to be smooth, hard to tell cuz of my dancing ability, but I know moves though. The wrist rolls are kind of a combination of both lock and smooth and some of the moves should be almost like para para riiight.gif. Oh well, glad you liked it, it was mad fun to do and maybe if I knew how to dance, it would look a lot better E13.gif.

Yeah, I liked it too. A little sloppy at a few parts, but you had the crowd on your side, and the style fit the song well. Nice to see a new face at FS who actually dances on the pad instead of someone trying to throw in 1337 bar tricks and stuff. =)

kai: Knowing you, I'd definitely be interested in seeing what you can pull off at that tourney...beginner has sadly been underutilized in the past.

Tournament-proven rules of props:

1) If you hold it the entire time, you will not win.

2) If the prop is bigger than your arm and is not a cane, you will not win.

5) Glowsticks have never won a tournament, and for good reason - they limit foot movement and limit the arms to 2-4 "neat" looking effects.

Extremely well said. I haven't FS'd in a tourney in a good 5-6 months, but, when I was really into improv, I was a "props" kind of guy, so much that I pretty much used a different one for every song. While some of them were actually pretty funny and did something for a routine (a wooden duck in Secret Rendezvous=wtf?, but a good wtf), while some of them were just silly (a pair of pink bunny ears for Blond Girl that kept falling off.) So, if you do try to use props at a future time, make sure you practice moving around with them, and follow the rules that CC laid out.

And, for a perfect example of #5, check out the Christmas Of Fire videos from a year or so back (Dec 2003.) It was my first ever tournament, and I FS'd Twilight Zone with glowsticks and glitter and the works. While I thought (at the time) that it was a pretty good routine, it wasn't until I went back and looked at the video that I saw how limp and boring my upper body movements were, all because I was doing the same figure 8 move with my glowsticks, and nothing else.

I miss freestyling =(

i would say i have a pretty pathetic freestyle but that dosn't stop me from practicing every day to make it look decent. I sometimes do the whole thing with my hands of improvise by sitting on the down arrow with my butt. I know I'm pathetic so can someone give me some advice please!!! E2.gif

Quick advice:

Remember - Only spins and/or use of hands =/= freestyle.

Yeah, the hard part in starting out in FS is that the songs are a minute and a half long, and a few dependable moves aren't going to cut it for the whole thing (especially if they're spins 'n slaps). What I suggest first is that you listen to a song and pick out the noticeable music cues (Spin the Disc being the most obvious). You can then get the crowd on your side by planning out moves to fit these cues - comedic, snazzy, whatever. We've all heard the songs to death, so we anticipate certain parts when we see them freestyled. Keeps our attention, y'know?

This is basically what Phrekwenci's done in tournaments ever since Electro Tuned. He'd improv almost everything, but made sure to hit those "checkpoint" moves. Safe to say, it's worked out for him. =p

The freestyle should fit the style of the song. If you've prepped b-boy moves, you should go for Get Up 'N Move or StD without question. And while you're at it, check out Get Up 'N Move doubles/standard/little. biggrin.gif

Cool opportunity, btw, you should get that on video.
