there exists a schematic that i found and duplicated before it got lost in the middle of the thread. it alows a led to be activated whenever a current flows through a particular wire:
all of the variables are EXTREMELY variable.
d1 is your led, with a maximum amperage voltage requirement.
r1 limits the amperage of the circuit to that amperage.
t1 is a transistor of unknown specs.
s1 is your arrow.
s2 is an on-off switch for the circuit.
if you can figure out a configuration that works, please post it and i will include it in my sketch. this requires a lot of experimentation with electronics and such, so if you are uncomfortable in that subject, you'll have to wait a few months until i finish my circutry course in college. then ill be able to give you precise numbers.
|
Okay, thanks for the schematic. That doesn't look too complicated, and I'm sure that I could get it to work without much trouble (I've also been taking electrical courses in college, ECET major, Purdue University). Will a LED really provide enough lite to be noticable though? All the LED's I've ever dealt with gave off minimal light.
I'm gonna have to try and find a real DDR machine sometime, and chek it out before I begin construction of my own pad.
Thanks! |

Thanks, i ended up finding the right kind of weatherstriping. I'll be putting that in right about now..
I just bought a cat 5 crimper and a snap in connector thing that i'll try to install so i can disconnect the pad from the buttons, if i need help i'll ask you guys.
Thanks again adamthole!
oh and rockhopper, your pad looks nice! _________________

I agree with padmaker... I stopped getting notifications too *mutters*, I wondered why the forum was so silent, guess I'm gullible. Nice 9 panel pad. I considered that, because I've really liked pump it up at the arcade recently, but if I try to master all the games right now I'm going to get nowhere, hehe. I'll stick to heavy/oni doubles as my goal.
As far as putting lights in your pad, I'm making progress there. I've found some good leds that I'm deciding between now, and I'll be running a test circuit off the ps2 soon. The tricky part is getting ahold of ps2 connectors/cords that have a wire hooked up to that 8v pin. I'll post picks and all when I write my walkthrough... once I get it working, hehe, I'm still in the baby stages.
Adamthole: I'm making a pad with lights that draws all its power from the ps2 only, using leds. If you can wait around a couple weeks or so, I'll be able to tell people how to do this. That way you don't need an extension cord with another outlet or anything. |

Quick note on LED lighting, etc. An update if you will.
My circuit is going to be simpler than those containing relays and transistors and 9v power sources. I will be using a controller extension cable (or a cable cut off of a dual shock controller -- whichever is cheaper), and tapping into Pin 3 on a ps2 pinout. It has 8v of power. I'll be running that to one set of contact screws, and ground to another set of contact screws. I'll wire up the leds in parrallel, each with its own current limiting resistor, and connect those to the ground side of the circuit. When the arrow is stepped on, in addition to completing a SEPERATE circuit for the button mechanics, it will complete the lighting circuit and light up several leds in only that arrow. I'll update more when the time comes. |

the cancel button is the triangle button on a regular controller. if you hold the triangle button when playing DDR with a ps2 controller, it will undo the previous action you'd done in the game. some people don't know that cuz they haven't played any DDR version with a ps2 controller, usually they've just bought the DDR pad and play with that.
The point is that to play an American DDR game with all the options you need three buttons: select to accept actions, triangle to cancel actions, and start to organize the songs and act as a second select button. so if you built a pad with extra arrow panels, to have all options you would need three or four extra arrow panels and neither of those seem very practical to me unless you want to play pump it up. |

It has nine buttons. He specifically said he wanted to play "pump it up" which requires the center step and the four diagonals, hence every panel on his dance pad is a button. Pump It Up (also called PIU) is only for the PC currently, namely step mania here in the US. It's awesome to play at the arcade, but in my mind (after research because I love how the game is more like dancing in some ways) not practical to try to play at home. If step mania works great for you though, and you've figured out a non-lagging way to play on your pc with a dance pad, go for it. I'm going to stick with making some small push buttons I can hit with my feet for the start, select, and triangle.

if anyone has any sucessful guides of a 9 step dance pad i would appriciate it if they could post it.
i have been reading regular guides like the http://www.geocities.com/ddrhomepad
and i belive i have the "skills" necessary to make one the problem is that i need guidence thanks again for any links posted |

I suggest you talk to Rockhopper, and check out the page just before this one. He made a 9 step dance pad for PUI and posted the pictures just TODAY about 14 hours ago. Ask him how he did it, though honestly all you do is take the same design you use for the normal four arrow buttons and apply that to all of them. Ask Rockhopper, perhaps he'll help you. Keep in mind PUI is only for the PC so you'll need to use a keyboard encoder or get a good ps2/xbox - pc adapter... one that works mind you. Not calling you stupid, just saying, better safe than sorry.

i was reading the earlier parts of the guide and must have missed it thank you
EDIT: well i am using stepmaniax for xbox and i will be using a ps2 to xbox converter. |

No problem, I was asking questions about a 9 button pad just last week, so you're not alone. I just decided to attempt a different feat for right now... I'll probably build one later... hehe, I'll build the first 9 panel pad with lights powered solely from whatever console you plug it into: pc, xbox, ps2... MUAHAHAHA. |

oh man. your evil..... pure evil
IDEA: maybe you can just make a dance pad and intergrade it to the floor of your living room and when your not using it... put a rug over it.
i am such a genius |

lol, my dad has actually suggested I do that before... because I play too much, hehe. That would be a cool feat for someone to pull off, though its a bit out of my league :-). |

Where did everyone get their arrow graphics printed out? I am planning to go to the UPS store for it. |

I'm going to be having mine done at Kinkos, other people print it on two pieces of paper and tape them together, any print shop can do it. |

I saved the graphics from the internet on my flash drive. Do you think they have printing from removable drives like that or at least floppies or CD-Rs? |

I believe they can print off of flash drives, should be able to easily. But take it in on one of the other kinds of media just in case, that way you won't have to make 2 trips at all. |

Ok, thanks.
I'm gonna make printing out the arrows my last priority so I can make sure I have everything working on the pad before putting the final touches on. |

I anxiously await a picture of your final pad with the LED's
Could someone PM me more information about PIU? I keep hearing about it, but I have never seen it played or know what it is. All I know is it has 9 buttons. Any info would be appreciated. (sorry for the Off-Topic post, just PM me so this isn't a thread-jack. Thanks) |
