Since people been having problems with the RO 2.0 pad, i decided to try one out my self.
I picked up my RO pad from Best Buy for $104.99 with 5% sales tax(VA). Got home, hooked it up to my pc using the EMS2 USB adapter and start to play Stepmania (timing at 5-6).
First thing I noticed is that it does not move as much, I beleve it has an anti-slip bottom and added foam in the middle which helps.
The thing is with my old NAKI soft cheapo pads, they wore out pretty fast (4 months at least!!!) since i play 8-9 footers and move the pad all around the place.
I also noticed I was getting better scores, I never could A "A" due to the pad keeps moving around. Now i finally got a B. Also I A'ed Diving on my second try.
here are some picts.
Red Octane Logo on pad
Red Octane 2.0 pad (sorry if its a little dark, still trying to work the camera)
The retail box
Shot of passing "A" with a B w/146 Max Combo on the new pad
I keep people up to date with my new pad and see if i develop problems down the road. |

The Ignition is the best soft pad you can buy; that is, for the duration that it functions.
My RO Ignition worked great for about 4 months, then was suddenly overcome with rapid-firing syndrome. I subsequently bought a $60 metal pad off Ebay and used that until I got sick of the immense pain in my feet. I plugged in my Ignition pad just for the hell of it after about 3 months of it not functioning, and for some odd reason it was working fine again.
The bottom line is that if you have a fair amount of money, don't want a metal pad, and don't mind replacing your pad rather frequently, the RO Ignition isn't a bad choice. It's a damn good pad as long as it lasts. The problem is that they don't seem to last very long. |

I got mine on Christmas (THREE days ago!) and the down arrow began to exhibit the aforementioned symptoms only last night. Today I was experimenting with it, and realised that the down arrow won't respond when the left or right arrow is depressed, and that it won't respond until the left or right arrow is stepped off of (hence the delay). It doesn't work backwards, though (down arrow doesn't interrupt). Additionally, the up arrow doesn't affect the down arrow and vice versa. Because of this problem, the LD and RD jumps won't register (not even with a gallop).
I'm pretty pissed off that Red Octane would pull bullshit like this. I mean, seriously, how much testing is required to uncover this problem (unless, of course, it was intentional). |
Wow. That is the exact way I would describe what went wrong w/ mine, and soon too. Is there a way of fixing this? |

How would you mod two pads to play doubles so that they don't slip apart? |

I was wondering if I could use velcro but I don't want to rip up the threads in my carpet. So maybe I could put down some plywood and attach the velcro to the plywood and the bottom of the pads..but I don't want to go through all that work if the velcro will just peel off. Will velcro stick on the plywood? Will it stick to the pad? What do I use? I'm not real good at this stuff obviously. |

Hmm... plywood only comes in 4X4 or 4X8 and I have no way to cut it. That's far too large. Even if I took two smaller pieces and tried to put a hinge in the middle, it would till be too large. I'm at a complete loss. |

I've really got to defend the BNS DX pad. I bought it about 6 months ago and it still works fine. You can also mod the DX by sewing the arrow raisers into place. Go with the Ignition if you've got the money to spend, but if you are new to DDR and want to get a pad & a game, a $140 investment may be out of reach.
Even though the DX is an Ignition clone, its a VERY good ignition clone. So buy one. |

I just got a RO about a month ago, and today I noticed there were very small tears on the inside of the pad only through the first layer of material. I read earlier that it's best to duct tape the whole entire inside, but I don't want my pad to get to slippery. I was thinking maybe I could just duct tape the creases because that is the only place where tearing is occuring. Suggestions? |

Your points about the BNS DX are true for the time you bought it. 6 months ago is around June or July 2004. Back then, BNS DXs were still considered top of the line pads. The big problems with them really began surfacing around September or October of last year, right around when I finally had the money to buy one, unfortunately enough. Sewing the arrows in place would probably work, but unfortunately the BNS DX is on backorder until January 25 according to their website. |

It's supposed to be for your mic on Xbox Live but it doesn't fit. _________________

Schof, I e-mailed redoctane asking that same question and here's what they said:
Hello,
Thank you for the email. The 2 ports are for Xbox memory
card/communicator.
Thank you,
Service RedOctane
P.S. I heard they don't work though. And that other guy was right about what the chord thing was. |

Yes, it's for the Xbox Connector so you can have your microphone but they don't work. I've heard many people say that they don't even fit. =/ _________________

Mine did this and, after a bit of email tag, RO replaced my pad. From what I've read in the rest of this thread, this is probably being caused by the plastic sheet that sits inside the top part of the mat bunching up and causing the wiring to overlap and interfere a bit with eachother. Try following some of the recommendations on this board to fix it. I'm going to try it soon with mine once it wears out a little more, it's still playable but getting annoying. At least this thread has taught me how to remedy the problem instead of just giving up on the pad and letting it collect dust once it goes under. |

The ports *do* work, however, the headphone extender was obviously not tested very well since it doesn't fit into the xbox live headset memory card thing. To fix this get a Dremel rotary grinder and shave off the top part of the plastic on the extention cord. Both me and a friend were able to get our headsets working once we got the extension cord to fit. |

What IS the "headset" thing on the Xbox anyways? (I dont have an XBox yet)
Edit: I got two more questions. My bottom arrow has been flakin out. Here's what has been goin on: say there is a whole run of fast steps where every other arrow is down (ex. right, down, left, down, right, down, up, down) it works for the first step then doesnt on any more down steps. I was thinkin it is sticking to my foam. Judging the info I gave, could I just buy more dense foam from redoctane for 10 bucks then everything will be fine? Also, how long is an Ignition pad's warranty (I got mine from Best Buy about a month ago and it is startin to flake out and was wonderin if i could return it) _________________

The headset is so that you can talk to people on Xbox Live when you're playing with them. _________________
