Disadvantage:

feel guilty for continuing to play after kids storm off crying when they're not doing so well

know that sneaking into movies is wrong so can't play at the movie theater without paying $6.50 "cover charge"

Advantage:

get to show other adults how to play it at the arcade because they feel more at ease asking a peer about the game. A couple of days ago this guy who must have been 75 at least asked me how to play. I set him up with Let's Groove on beginner and guess what - he got three steps right! He was pretty happy to have played, though.

Since my kids and I started playing in ?April?May? we've gotten four other families in the neighborhood interested. Sadly, one of the moms decided to buy MCGroove, the MadCatz dance game for Gamecube, because she didn't want to shell out the money for XBox or PS2. I told her that, in my opinion, it was just awful. (Yes, I think I did use that young people's term "sucks"; it just seems to explain things so well.) Her son plays at our house and our neighbor's house, and I hate to think of his disappointed little face when he plays this awful game on Christmas morning, thinking it will be like DDR.

Who here has aches and pains? I played for about 1.5 hrs Christmas day and then couldn't sleep that night because my bursitis was acting up! Does that sound like some old person crap or what?

I think it's because I was playing on a soft pad on the cement basement floor. I also play on my CF, and can't recall having that much pain with a longer session, and at the arcade, ditto with the no pain.

Hoping to commiserate with other ancient folk. My birthday is coming up on the 2nd; it's not like I need to feel older or anything.

And yes, aches and pains are a way of life these days. I've always had problematic knees and ankles from playing other sports... one thing DDR seems to have contributed is stiffness in my achilles tendons that I never noticed before. And I've got this new problem with my leg that is pretty odd... if I tap this spot in the front of tibia just under my knee, I get a sharp burning pain on the outside of my leg at about the same latitude. I've never heard of a pinched nerve in the knee area, but that's kinda what this seems like.

I hate that weird stuff. I try not to be a hypochondriac, but I swear as I get older those little aches and pains seem to come out of nowhere! I don't even have the excuse of having played any other sports - just DDR.

In our area (or should I say country?), only highschool and college
students play DDR. I'm one of the exceptions.

What's weird is I look way younger for my age (real age - 7 ?). When I play, the 'rude' kids act all tough and make fun of me for not being as good as them. But when we get to talk later on (introductions, etc), they learn that I've already graduated from college and am currently working
in a good company for 3 years. I suddenly get treated so well and with respect! They're probably thinking : "Let's be understanding. He can only do 6 footers and below because he is old". That makes me feel really old.

I saw this great article yesterday that was talking about the concept of adultescence. It's a new term for young at heart adults. From wordspy.com

That is so exactly me. (us?) I ask you; Is that so bad?

what a relief i thought i was one of the eldest here too. im 27 and started playing 2 years ago my 4 year old son also plays and i love it ok im not great i can do most 4-6 footers (standard player) but i do have that problem of school runs, looking like some kind of weirdo at the arcade etc

@auntieM - no thats not so bad - im one of those too ill be listening to techno dance and rave music playing DDR and other video games all my life i have a good friend whos 52 is my clubbing buddy

a school run is when you take your kid to and from school.
and it is literally a run for me as im always late picking him up (ddr/pc delays me)

Something I've noticed in the past few years, kids ALWAYS ALWAYS do better at games than adults. I think it has something to do with the natural reaction time a kid has opposed to an adult. They're quicker and respond much more accurately than adults do.

It's like - how in the HECK did I beat Super Mario Bros 3 back when I was 7? I can't do it now! It's a very odd phenomena. Of course, if you practice playing a lot (like DDR), you naturally regain that talent of having quick reflexes, so you eventually pull yourself up to a higher level (i.e. Standard or Heavy).

I think the whole "adults playing DDR" thing rocks. The last tournament I ran, we had a mother and daughter come and compete. The mother was in her mid-40s I'd say. She played in the Standard tournament and took 3rd Place! It was so neat to see someone older than the rest of the players in our area (all of us are mid-20s and below), and then to see them beat the pants off a bunch of the other kids was great! I invited her back to the next tournament, so I hope we see her again. I hope more adults in the 30+ range get into the game, it'd be neat to have an actual large range of people who played. That way people could know video games aren't just for teenagers who have nothing better to do. They're for anyone who has nothing better to do!

I'm 29, married, with mortgage, and I've been playing for about 3 years in the arcade and at home. I've never seen anyone even close to my age at the arcade, but I look younger so I don't really get many comments.

I have AA'd 145 heavy songs in the arcade, including several 9-footers, so I blend in with most of the younger players. DDR is pretty much my sole source of exercise.

I wish I could find more people my age around my city who are into it. I've convinced some of my friends to play it, and a few of them even bought PS2s and home pads, but they're either not interested enough to play often and get better, or too chicken to try it in the arcade. Bleh.

Oh. I wish there were old folks competition in Seaside (NJ). But then I really havent tried Arcade game (only once)..

Home console player here. Have been playing 18 months and LOVE IT!!! People looks at me funny when I tell them I play Video game though On Home game, I can play Standard and some heavy (with speed mod). I love Tsugaru Apple mix!!!
