You guys are being a little over-zealous of late. Seems that anything with the word "torrent" in it winds up automatically locked.

I'm aware that there's an anti-piracy policy.

There's also such a thing as non-infringing use.

Not all torrents are YARR HARR PIRATICALLL, in fact they're a handy way for people to distribute large or rare files. I'm sure I've seen others that don't necessarily involve piracy, but this is the latest:

While I doubt very much that you could find that sort of thing in a torrent (other than, say, HL source, but that doesn't seem to be what he's asking for), source code and tutorials are pretty widely availible and no doubt someone would've been able to help the guy out.

I just ask that you use some of that... what's it called... judgement. Banning torrents because they can infringe is like banning URLs just because some of them point to pedophilia.

And that's kind of the point - the fact that he was asking for a thing as opposed to a place. And I'd like for you to name me one thing that he'd be able to easily find on BitTorrent that would get him started in Game Programming as opposed to places. No, really. Be serious.

In the likely event that MR RUSSIA reads this thread - You really should get a solid footing in development before even considering game programming (something I am very skeptical that MR RUSSIA has), but assuming that those prerequisites are met, I believe GameDev.net is pretty much the premier game developer resource. Also of interest is the XGameStation amateur developer kit.

Utterly irrelevant. You're confusing an example with the greater issue. I don't care whether or not there's game dev torrents, and it's completely besides the point.

And BTW; coming from someone who knows what he's talking about, game design is as good a place to start when learning to code as anywhere. Some of the greatest designers in the world got their start hacking out games to teach themselves the craft.

No it's not. You failed to provide any other examples to highlight your "greater issue", so all I can really comment on (and in this case, counter) is your example. Come back when you have more evidence to back up your claims.

1. Don't imply that I don't know what I'm talking about - It's not a very good way to conduct a persuasive argument.

2. Some of the greatest designers in the world got their start by taking the initiative to do so. I think my first game-related tinkering was learning about hex-editing Commander Keen save files using a hex editor in Xtree Gold. I did it because I was curious. Asking in the wrong way on an unrelated website without having demonstrated any legwork beforehand is indicative of someone who is more interested in a thing than in doing a thing.

As a point of interest, several torrent sites, including htp://www.suprnova.org and http://torrentbits.org have been mysteriously shut down. Suprnova had a goodbye message up the other day, but it didn't state why they had been shut down. Now my connection is refused when I try to go there....
Torrentbits's is still up, though.

Hardly mysterious. Read Slashdot if you want the reasoning.

The MPAA has launched a legal battle against a bunch of torrent sites all over the world. Therefore, they're all getting shut down.

Yes, it fucking well is. I could very well have simply posted about the torrent issue and not included any example at all. There's no terribly stressful cognitive leap involved here.

And what's wrong with starting by asking on a forum? I could've given him some useful information. Everybody has to start somewhere.

I agree with the basis of Radix's post. However, because of lack of examples, it's hard for me see that the mods are being overzealous regarding that. MP3s, torrents, etc. are all fine as long as they're not copyright protected.

Then why are you making one? You want for us to explain a pattern of behavior while only citing one example. That's not a "pattern of behavior".

We aren't inherently biased against BitTorrent, P2P, or any other distribution method. Heck, we've discussed the idea before of using BT to solve the video distribution problem. We just cannot allow our site to be used to propagate copyrighted materials.

I think the problem is just a disagreement on the method of enforcement. Rather than remove individual offending posts, Spike shut down the thread immediately. I'm not going to second-guess his decision, but on this particular point, I can see where you're coming from.

I will also state, for the second time, that you're not making a very convincing argument by lacing your posts with vitriol. There's a saying you should learn...something about flies and vinegar...

As Cutriss already pointed out, if you want to get your point across you shouldn't flamebait. It doesn't help much. Obviously not all torrents are piracy related, so no need to be condescending about that. I actually argued in a paper that things like Napster and BitTorrent should be embraced by corporations instead of shut down. That and they should be allowed to continue because they have the potential for non-infringing use, much like the VCR did (Sony won a suit that against it because TV companies claimed it could "steal" their TV shows). I also know that I have posted this fact (Sony winning a lawsuit, the whole potential for non-infringing use thing) at least once. Probably twice.

Anyways, I locked the thread because the day before I actually saw a couple torrents for game programming code books. Copyrighted books. So when I saw him asking that was the first thing I thought of.

If people know that there's something out there they can PM it to him. But seriously, do we really need to allow threads that ask for places that give out torrents anyways? Google takes care of me just fine.
