I have seen enough:
NO HOME PADS ARE RELIABLE BESIDES THE COLBAT FLUX!!
Yes, the interior WIRES of my $200 dollar RO metal pad ripped, electrions come over to try and fix it and make it work, 2 of them screwed the arrow on backwords.... And i emailed RO and they said they dont fix broken pads... Little Dicks. _________________

Umm, dude, no offense, but a single Cobalt Flux costs almost $300. That's a lot of money, way more than some (or perhaps many, can't say for sure) people want or can afford to drop on a DDR pad. I'm an eternally broke college student. Having $300 to spend on a DDR pad is but a fantasy for me. I don't really have any choice other than to take my chances with a lower priced RO or Level Six (though definitely not a BNS) pad. |

wish I'd come here earlier... got a BNS DX in May, really liked it, so bought another when I thought it was time to play doubles. The changes in how they're manufactured are really unfortunate, it was obviously different and less fined honed - felt slushy, unresponsive.
Sending it back, in the meantime I bought myself a RO Ignition DX (the kind that plays both PS2 and Xbox). Also seems a bit slushy compared to my old BNS, but it is better than the new BNS.
Since they were so similar to begin with my guess is the manufacturing process for both changed, which is a crying shame. Not a good way to treat customers, but I feel like the reason they do it is b/c people keep buying anyway so they can get away w/ it.
Definitely time to saved up for a CF, and boycott these mediocre soft pads at least til they put some effort into making them durable and responsive.
Edit: removed redundancy _________________

Ok, my point is that, people need to start making them better, because the only good pad out there right now costs 300 dollors, no way inhell im buying one. I have stopped home DDR, GJ RED OCTANE!! _________________

The down arrow seems to be the Achilles Heel of this pad. I'm having trouble with it also. Sometimes it registers, other times it doesn't. I pulled back the white plastic on the inside and could see the circuitry but it was enclosed by this thick clear plastic so I wasn't sure what to do with it.
Also, does anyone know how to set up the RO pads for doubles? I need to bind the pads together somewhoe. They're thick, so if they start sliding apart, a person could seriously twist an ankle. |

On the subject of the BNS DX pad arrow inserts slipping...
I figured out how to fix the arrow inserts, but it takes a bit of sewing skill (and a good sewing machine) to make the pad look like it's new when you're finished.
Use a seam ripper to take out the seam holding the nylon webbing and the foam and plastic layers together on the down arrow side of the pad.
Use contact cement to re-attach the arrow inserts to the plastic. Contact cement is heat resistant, so the inserts won't slide anymore after heating up from dancing. Make sure you follow the contact cement instructions to apply it.
Finally, sew the seam closed. This is most eaisly done with two seams. First, sew all the layers together including the zipper, but not the nylon binding. Then, sew on the binding, sewing over your first seam. Before sewing, spray a bit of cooking oil on the top plastic layer, so the plastic doesn't stick to the sewing foot.
I'm very happy with my dance pads now, and they have at least the quality of a RO pad. |

Has anyone here used the Igniition 2.0 pad with Ultramix2? I have a similar pad (ps2 and xbox) and in Ultramix (but not MAX, for instance) I can't hit the down arrow if the left or right arrow is being pressed at the same time. I'm thinking of switching to the Ignition, if anyone can verify that it doesn't have the same problem. (one person, Bemani Dog, has posted in these forums saying he had the same prob with his RO, but I haven't been able to contact him) |

I guess theres hope for the pad if those wires dont get fricked up. But how does the pad play when you play on it? _________________

My question is this: is there any hope for my pad? |
Yes and no. What you want to do is take scissors or an x-acto knife and cut around the inside edges of the white layer, like a huge U, with the attached part near the top. Peel that back and look at how bad the damage really is. What I usually do to fix these pads is do the same cut on the wiring (the crinkley plastic layer) and the foam with the holes in it.
Spread out the foam, and try to remove all creases if you can. That top wiring layer? Yeah, cover up any of the wiring paths with duct-tape. These are the paths that go from the arrows and corner buttons to the control box at the top of the pad. Sometimes the paths will touch each other, or the top and bottom contact layers will shift so that pressing left or right will activate your down button, for instance.
When done, just lay your foam layer back down, and tape it back to the edges of the U you cut earlier. Do the same with the wiring layer, and the white protective layer.
How to avoid this? When you get these in the mail, before you ever use them (or after one quick easy song to make sure they work), apply a layer of duct-tape to the bottom of the white layer that sits on top of the foam. Yes, the whole thing. Top to bottom, front to back. This tape not only reinforces the protective layer, but the back side of duct tape is slippery, which means the friction between the pad and the foam insert is greatly reduced. This alone will substantially increase the life of this type of pad.
There really is no way to protect the inside from bunching, so you'll eventually have ghost-step and misfiring problems, in which case you'll have to perform the surgery I described earlier. If the makers of these pads used slightly thicker (and stiffer) plastic for the internal wiring, and higher-quality foam to separate the arrows, these pads would last much longer. Personally I'd buy one with these attributes, even if it were more expensive; but so far as I know, nobody makes them. The internal materials are just as cheap in all of these pads, from cheap Ebay knockoffs to Red Octane.
Stick it out, though. The duct tape will at least make your pad last longer, if not fix it completely. _________________

And outside of RyChan mod...what are some other alternatives as far as modding/preserving Ignition style pads go? |
My friend had two RO Ignition pads for as long as I can remember (probably well over 2 years). One thing we kept doing was reconnecting the magnetic paint that acts as circuitry for the buttons with folded tin foil and tape. Just don't cross the tin foil onto the magnetic tape for other arrows as this will cause two arrows to fire when stepping on just one. It's a quick fix (about 3-5 mins). We would have to do it every few weeks but it dramatically extended the life of the pads. They are probably still around though I'm not sure. |

Adhesive velcro strips on the bottom of the pads. Works perfectly for doubles, always has, always will. |

OK I just bought this yesterday and I have 2 things to say. One about this quote. The headphone extension that comes with it doesn't even make a connection into my xbox headset so that doesn't work at all. And the main issue after only an hour of play on heavy mode the down arrow does not work at all. I will bring it back to best buy and see what they have to say. _________________

I just got and Ignition pad this past Monday, and I love the thing. I went from getting 5+ goods, almosts, boos and misses each on Max 300 on a thin pad to 1 almost and 1 boo on the Ignition. I like how supportive it is even though it's kindof a soft pad. I liked it better when it was right out of the box and rock hard, before I broke it in, but it's still awesome; I haven't noticed it malfunctioning at all. |
