for x-box, you follow the same instructions.
just instead of a playstation controller, use an x-box controller

thanks |
if you want to learn about it a good detailed description of how the pad works internally is in the movies by riptide. don't follow his design exactly though if you want to build one with ddrhomepad's design. for the control board if you want on specifically working with the xbox just buy a madcatz dual shock soft pad. i think the control board in them has plugins for both the xbox and ps2. sweet eh? ^^ |

it's all about what you have, want, and need in a pad. if you have only like 150 bucks then a homebuilt pad is for you. if you have 300 then you might consider a CF.
if you want a pad that doesn't ever break down or need barely any tweaking/cleaning then a cf is for you. if you don't particularly care a little tweaking and like building things then maybe a home pad is for you.
if you have particular trouble building things and just want an extremely reliable pad that will probably last longer than you will then a CF is for you. if you want a pad that is just as good as the CF but will require some physical effort and less money then a home pad is for you.
basically the main problem with CF's are that they cost WAAAAAAYY too much for most people. it's great if you're a complete ddr "maniac" and would rather give your arms away than live without it but still the money factor drags a lot of people down.
I particularly have a great interest in building things as well as DDR so home pads are for me. also i don't really like the fact that CF's have a completely smooth surface making it hard to configure yourself atop the pad. with the home pad they have screws at the four corners of each arrow panel making it easy to find yourself. and the fact that i'm almost always around 150 dollars makes it a good choice. |

Just a quick question.
Are the Riptide homemade mats better than a colbalt flux? _________________

pooface: i believe so, yes.
raymond85: no, nothing wrong with it. just if you want a ddrhomepad, dont follow the instructions for a riptide pad. just watch the videos to get a feel for how a pad works and is put together. _________________

OK so anyways I built a 2 riptide pads awhile ago. I have them hooked up to an I-PAC SE to use with stepmania. Only problem is after about 2 or 3 songs the entire pads go dead. I usually can fix it by unplugging the I-PAC and replugging it in. I assume this would be from static discharge on the pads. I was wondering if anybody has encountered this or how I may be able to prevent this from happening. Otherwise I'm gonna have to dump these pads and spend 300 more dollars on CF pads. I already destroyed to DDRHOMEPAD pads to build these RIPTIDE ones. _________________

ok so i built a pad using DDR homepads instuctions. it worked fine besides the lexan. i had to buy super strong lexan pannels after the first set cracked right when i started to screw them in. so after that setback, everything seems ok besides 2 things. ONE, how do i prevent this thing from sliding around on my thick carpet? anything above a 6 footer and im sliding all around the carpet. and TWO, my arrows are very sensetive in the CENTER , but the corners are not. i get boos or goods when i know i should get a perfect when i hit the edges , which is my style of play, flat footed , and i touch the edges mainly to conserve energy. SO, how should i go about making the edges more sensitive? thanks for the help. _________________

ugh... I've been working on the ddrhomepad, I just need to make the arrows now (got the soldering done first) and yeah. The person I have been doing this with decided to do some stuff on his own and...

If you somehow didn't notice, the bottom space is really big (look to the bottom right) and the right arrow is small bla bla bla it's all messed up. How (if I can) would I be able to fix this? |

c8_3p`/0n:
ONE dont play on carpet, or if you must, weight down your pad or something.
TWO try taking a layer of weatherstripping/tubing off of all the sides (exacto knife a third of it off, i dont suppose you could do this with tubing, huh?) that should make it a mite more sensitive. or, if you cant do that, elevate your contacts with washers or sheet metal shims.
d4173nSh!:
rubber mallet? or you could take off the offending corner braces, flip the panel around, and redrill your holes. theyre probably just off center. but i prefer rubber mallet. or if that doesnt work, muscly elder brother. _________________

Its been forever since Ive been on here
I was just lookin to see if anyone had new designs they were building. Its good to see that people are still interested in building pads
Im trying to get my pad to be a tad more cushioned, because it is way way too stiff ( though it is very sensitive). Playing on it is like jumping up and down on a bare floor since the contacts have like less than 1/8" of travel.
I still have pics up of my pad if anyone is interested
Happy playing _________________

ive got an idea for a cushiony pad, but it sounds stupid and not sensitive:
two layers of weatherstripping along the outside edge, then one layer just inside of that with your contacts mounted on top of it. outer layer cushions the whole thing, under the contacts gives you some travel just after you hit.
i dont think itll work, it wont be sensitive enough. _________________

i wish home depot or lowes carried mountable springs that were small and strong enough to support a panel. I was thinking of making each panel with one sheet of plexiglass on top of a stiff wooden piece of ply wood, then have that be supported with four or more springs.... that would be awsome.
btw, does anybody know how the cushioning in arcade machines works? ive seen pics but I cant figure them out. _________________

in the arcade, the panel is supported entirely by the sensors, which bend a little bit after they're closed. _________________

well my ENTIRE house is carpted, and i cant think of ANYTHING that would weigh my pad down enough to where it would not slide. its really frustrating to say the least any other suggestions from anyone. also, about the sensitive problem, do u think its because a few of the corners are almost flush with the base? i think i may h ave screwed them in to tight maybe? or too loose? i dont know, im kinda new to this building thing. anyway, thanks for the help so far keep them coming _________________

I had that problem with my first pad.... so for the second pad when I got to EXACTLY where you are, I built a frame... if you measure the frame out and attach it.. it'll pull the smaller arrow to make it larger and push the larger to make it smaller... click the link in my sig for pics.... it worked great. _________________

well, i jsut completed my doubles kit using riptides design (looked more like the arcade) at first i found myself twisting my ankle, so i added 2 inches of sheet metal on every side and added a bar at the back of both pads, got the dimensions from local arcade, just wondering if sensitivity takes a while to get there, havein trouble with songs like bag. i personally used the chip from a soft pad for both, they are coverred in wax, so i get no static electricity problem, i used cat 5 cable, and sprinkler calbe for my wires, and insted of going with the screws he used, i used flat topped 10 x1 3/4 for the brackets, 10 x 2 for the steel pads, 8 x 1 3/4 for the contacts, and copper plating for the contact strips, i also located the cords on the inside side of the pads so they are hidden by the 2 inch strip between the 2 pads, i cut a slot under the 2 inch strip into the wood so it sits flat. so far its cost me alot more than riptides, but i think its because i went with a little bit (prettier) things and added to make it more like the arcade. and so far, i cant tell the difference.
Thank you so much riptide for posting your design. it was a huge inspiration.
