I have a friend whose account has been hacked by somebody who obviously doesn't like her. The password has been changed and I'd guess that the e-mail address was too since she has tried the "forgot your password" link and didn't receive a response. She made a new account but was wondering if it was possible to get her old account back.

Her old account: http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=37378

If any mod/admin could remedy this, it would be much appreciated. If you need any more information, I'll do my best to fill you in.

Thank you.

I suspect the reason she didn't get her password is because the e-mail address in the blank is invalid. Have your friend contact me directly using the new account to verify the credentials on the old accound and we'll take care of it.

And one thing - saying an account was "hacked" implies a lapse of security on our part, and that just hasn't happened. If her account was compromised, it's almost certainly because of something on her end, and not ours.

Yeah, I put hacked in quotes because I knew it wasn't the right word but I couldn't think of a better one last nite. I'll contact her with what to do. Thank you for your help.

Not necessarily; it's a pretty loose term. Plain old brute force or educated guessing would qualify. In a stricter sense, according to The Jargon File version 4.3.1, it doesn't apply in either case.
So there.

If you really want to get technical with me, it's "cracked", not "hacked". So there.

Anyway, the problem will be solved via PMs, so no more need for this thread. I'll leave it unlocked just to prove that I don't have a lock fetish, but let's not touch it anymore, mmmkay? biggrin.gif

The account was restored to its original user and the person responsible for the hack was banned. Case closed.
