can you go into the "test input" function and get a response?
do that until it fails. really pound on it. when it doesnt respond, even a little bit, open up the pad and see if theres any wires or anything that moved really close to the contacts that might get in the way.
also, make sure that the panels go down all the way to the contacts when you press them. there could be a splinter or corner brace, or it could be rubbing against the sides.
or something, i think im being too vague _________________

hey im done wiring my pad except for one thing...i seem to have 3 grounds that i could solder to. i am using a beat pad controller board. when i touch a wire to the X button, and the ground wire to any one of the 3 points im talking about, it will respond. should i solder to all 3 or just choose one. thanks |

make sure those grounds work with all the buttons, then pick one. if one button doesnt work with one, dont use that one.
you dont have to solder to all three unless you like soldering. _________________

i'm almost done with my pad (thanx to all those who replied to my questions). i just have to add the graphics (which i already have, but they're too small, so i have to make some sort of border to cover the entire plexiglass area).
i still have two questions though:
1) i'm using an usb pad. it's properly installed and when i go to the control panel>game controllers and check the properties of it, everything seems to be ok. if you step on the arrow or press any of the buttons (start, back or 'insert coin') they light up and windows detects it as being pressed. stepmania detects it too. now, if i start playing, sometimes it won't show up as being pressed. is this a physical limitation? do i have to 'break the pad in' or something before it starts working properly?
2) when it does respond, the pad works *ok. after playing a couple of songs, the pad does not respond at all. i unplug it and plug it back in and poof, it works fine. i grounded the plexiglass pieces by adding some wires between them, and using a three-prong extension cord (and making sure the other two prongs are covered, so i don't end up with some extreme healing visions after getting 110v through my body). why would the pad act like this? could static electricity be a factor, even if the pad is grounded?
thank you very much! |
WHOA!!!! Do NOT just cover the other two prongs. PHYSICALLY REMOVE THEM! You are putting yourself in extreme risk by having them present. Covering them will only work for so long (and even that is iffy).
Remove the prongs and re-test... I've got a suspicion that will alleviate some (if not all) of your problem. _________________

hi guys,
i went into the test input thingy and baha! i have not been able to figure out what's wrong, but i get an error from windows saying that the usb device blah blah blah and that i should unplug it.
right after i bought the controller i was doing some testing and realized that there is no way you can press any of the arrows and either trigger at the same time (i'm not using the d-pad, since this particular gamepad uses the x axis and y axis in order to get the arrows working). anyways, i think some loose wire is making contact with that. i will open the pad up and see what i can do.
5thDementian:
whoa. thanx for the tip. i guess i'd better do that. i'd rather have to buy a different extension than having to get a new plastic leg or arm. |

hey guys i just finished my pad about 3 hours ago and i love it. ive been playing nonstop and i got 3 AA's on heavy(ive never gotten one before). Anyways the pad does seem to have a "flex" to it. what i mean is when i step on an arrow the whole pad sort of bends. Is this bad? Any suggestions? Thanks
Edit- i forgot to add that my dad doesnt seem to think this thing will last long. he owns a steel erection buisness so he knows about this stuff. how long did all your home pads last and wat type were they?(ddrhomepad or riptides) |

He means that without flexibility, shown as in bridges and earthquakes, the pad would snap under too much pressure, because it cannot bend. |

ok so im finding that plexy glass is very expensive, i started lookign into building my pad on saturday, my dad orded the sheet metal form his supplier, we had all the ply wood and 2x4's and i had all the wires solder and tools for the job, i took apart 2 soft pads, after i foudn that whuile soldering my controllers, the dang thigns kept frying, ugh, that was annoying, the ddr pad board has had no problem at all, it i beleive is due to the fact that they are layered in wax, it took me about 15 minutes to solder the wires to the ddr pads boards, there are 11 magnetic bands on these boards, the center is ground and 5 on left and right are for buttons, i drilled a small electronic screw through each magnet, i then wrapped the screwes with the respective wire. I got the wire from home depot, for better security and longer lasting durability, i used sprinkler wire, 7 strand. i used 2 cvables, and i will use the remaining wires for lights, to get aroudn useing a ground everywhere i go, ( i like mobility)(throw it in the back of my truck, grab a power iverter and party in the mall parking lot) i wrapped the compartment im placing the chip in, with anti static plastic that comes with computer motherboards, fry's sells the plastic.
so, all in all, i have spent aboiut 2 hours, 15 minutes on the controller boards and wiring, i have put together the base, and compartments, and i will be putting the sheet metal on the 12x12 boards tomarrow, hopefully i can pick up soem plexy glass on friday, but at 70 dollars a sheet, its a bit expensive for my taste, i estimate it will take me about 4 hours to do 2 pads. I will post pictures when im done. |

your pad will only do this on soft cushy carpet. You were probably playin in your family or living room with carpet right?
the "flexing" your pad does it perfectly normal for playing on a carpet floor. the carpet just like elevates the pad a bit from the solid wood floor underneath it. and when you step on a certain arrow or part of the pad, you add pressure to it thus making it sink. a good thing about this is that if you made your pad right it should totally move along with the differentiating weight on the pad. what it means is that when you step on a certain corner of the pad, the entire pad should move. if parts of the pad don't move when you step on a corner that means that over a certain amount of time your pad with warp. NOT GOOD
a good way to fix this is just play on wood floor or any solid ground. not cushy carpets. |

yes plexiglass is a bit expensive but if you buy right they'll last a lot longer than the pad will. Plus i think a 70 dollar sheet of plexiglass is enough to cover 1 and 1/2 pads. so if you're plannin on making 2, just get a smaller size for the second cuz you'll have extra plexiglass from the first. |

Probably not the best option since you want to get your pad done quickly, but you can pick up some surplus plexiglass off of ebay for pretty cheap. I got enough polycarbonate (Lexan) to do my pad with for under $16 shipped. |
