Bak once again!
I went to the store today and they had mad catz dual shock control pads there on sale, so i picked one up. Once again i cant get a pick but if anybody has one with the solder points labeled id appreciate it. Thankx  |

That'll be tough because you build one or the other... I don't think anyone here has BOTH.
I can say that I followed "most" of ddrhomepad's instructions, and the pad is not loud at all. Get on a floor without carpet (like a kitchen floor) and jump on it a few times like you're playing DDR (with shoes on)... that's what it sounds like. I love my pads.

thats not a fair question. too much depends on the skill of the person who built it. Any design can appear worthless due to bad construction.

i find that jumping a little harder on the pad gets me more in rhythm, because i can hear my steps in relation to the music.
and for real this time, im setting up to make extensive videos. measuring, cutting, soldering, finding the ground, mebbe trick bar, mebbe lights, who knows?

| hey im almost done my home pad, all i have left is soldering. i can only work on the pad with my dad and he wants to know about how long it would take to wire the whole pad. thanks. |

depends on what you cont on wiring. depending on what controller you have, how good you are at soldering, what design you use, etc. it could that anywhere from 2 to a million hours. after wiring it up and getting the connections to work, you have to calibrate it to your desired sensitivity. however, assuming that you dont ruin four different controllrs due to inexperience, the actual soldering part shouldn't take very long.
some tips on soldering:
1. for the contollers, use a thin point on the iron/gun, as well as thin solder wire.
2. use multistranded wire, which can be found in ps contollers or at radioshack. it is limp and has stronger tinsel strength than cat5 cable, making it much less likely to break off the contacts.
3. don't use too much solder. solder is easy to apply, but a real pain in the butt to remove. misapplying solder to circuitry can be devastating.
4. keep the iron/gun clean. here is a chemistry lesson: solder contains elemental tin, and sometimes iron, which reacts with oxygen in the air, creating oxide compounds. these form after solder is heated and left for about 10 seconds. the oxide compounds do not stick to circuits, so make sure you frequently wipe the tip of the iron on a wet sponge. you will know it is clean by looking at the solder n the tip. if it is shiny, it has been oxidized, so clean it again. if not, you are good to go.

I wired the buttons as I went, and added all the wires to the control board at the end.... I put in extra buttons as well.
Total time on my second pad was about 12 hours, maybe 15.

To the other poster, my border is made of 1x2 wood. The same wood that I used for the supports under the squares. I painted it black and secured it all around. Added a handle and a couple wheels for easy handling... Me and the gf love them.

I was wondering... can i make a control box or something that would allow me to play the homebuilt pad on XBOX and PS2? I haven't started yet becuase im trying to figure out what to do here. Also, would using pressure sensors instead of the screws and sheet metal be better? Help would be appreciated because i want to start my pad!

you could use a universal softpad circuit board. just figure out the connections and hook it up like any other pad. or follow instructions to make a control box and just use a universal softpad thing.

pressure sensors would work pretty well. compared to the sheet metal contacts i think it's a more high tech choice that works about the same. However, replacing pressure sensors would in my opinion be much harder than just re adjusting the sheet metal. Maybe I'm just not informed well enough in the area involving pressure sensors or sumtin but going in a more old fashion direction would be my personal choice. |

I just wanted to reply back and say thanks for your insights. This worked perfectly. I simply soldered the up and right arrow to the square and triangle and everything worked. Thanks again! |

| Hi, I just wanted to let you guys know I used a normal Naki soft dance pad for the soldering, and found it much easier. If anyone is interested I'll try to put up a pic showing which each point does. The solder points are very large and easy to find, but you have to scrape them a bit for the solder to stick. |

hi guys,
i'm almost done with my pad (thanx to all those who replied to my questions). i just have to add the graphics (which i already have, but they're too small, so i have to make some sort of border to cover the entire plexiglass area).
i still have two questions though:
1) i'm using an usb pad. it's properly installed and when i go to the control panel>game controllers and check the properties of it, everything seems to be ok. if you step on the arrow or press any of the buttons (start, back or 'insert coin') they light up and windows detects it as being pressed. stepmania detects it too. now, if i start playing, sometimes it won't show up as being pressed. is this a physical limitation? do i have to 'break the pad in' or something before it starts working properly?
2) when it does respond, the pad works *ok. after playing a couple of songs, the pad does not respond at all. i unplug it and plug it back in and poof, it works fine. i grounded the plexiglass pieces by adding some wires between them, and using a three-prong extension cord (and making sure the other two prongs are covered, so i don't end up with some extreme healing visions after getting 110v through my body). why would the pad act like this? could static electricity be a factor, even if the pad is grounded?
