Just recently I started getting this pain in my back a couple days ago. I initially assumed that it was because I was stressed and very tense all week. But, when I still had the back pain four days later, my mom got the idea that it might be all the DDR I've been playing over the past couple of months. I can see that impact on your feet can definitely cause a lot of pain sometimes, and many out there would probably say that we are really damaging our health. I don't know all the facts, though.

Has anyone else out there had any major health issues or injuries because of DDR? Are these health issues all that serious? Are we killing ourselves? What is your opinion?

I imagine that you need to supplement DDR with some other form(s) of exercise, say something that helps with the upper-body part.

You do need to warmup before you start playing, working out on your upper body isnt a bad idea either.

I second the warming up tht Osiris X suggested. I dont think that there are really any serious health issues to be conserned about,.... ponder.gif unless you have a heart condition, or if youre pregnate.... I also think that we are killing ourselves, in a good way though... i get tired after a while of playing DDR, yet i still keep on going.... so if u want to consider that "killing".... then yes, we are killing ourselves. nerd.gif

I think ANYTHING done to extremes can be harmful, DDR included. But in general, most of the really, really good players I've seen appear to be in excellent physical shape, so the benefits are pretty apparent.

I've been playing pretty harshly for the past 3 months now... no probs... all you need is semi decent posture, adequate hydration, decent warm-up, followed up by a small stretch, and most importantly decent shoes!

It's all about the shoes

Also home pads are rough on unshoed feet.. E1.gif

About a week ago, I was playing ddr, and somehow I REALLY hurt my neck (strained a muscle or something) and it still hurts today.

I imagine that you haven't played DDR that long (No longer than maybe 6 months). You will inevitably get pain if you keep playing DDR. If you're in no serious handicap, it's probably the body adjusting to the irregular stress it endured since you started playing. Especially in your quads, or calves, and whatnot.

My back used to hurt, yeah. I had a habit of bending down low when I get to hard parts of the song, mostly from being in that posture regularly in Basketball (But it Basketball, you aren't stationary all the time, so it isn't bad for that). But really, after maybe a total day's worth of 50 minutes of actually playing DDR, it isn't really gonna have any chance to have a bad effect on your back, since there's so much more of the day spent without DDR (and even days or weeks afterward, depending on how often you play). I've stopped bending over so much since then, which was long ago. Who knows, you might also have a posture problem.

No one said you have to bend over to play, anyway. Playing upright keeps the centripetal force to the middle of your body. Transfering your legs throughout is the trick.

I'm glad you brought this up, though. (Yeah, I'm sure Milk helps, heh. I drink that stuff nonstop.)

I've Never had that problem before, and I'm one of the bigger DDR/ITG players. Anyways build muscle, become like "The Govornator" and I bet you wont hurt anymore.

today i played Look to the Sky like four times in a row nonstop in training mode (i dont know why but this song is hell for me) and afterwards i had a horrible stabbing pain in my ribs and lung. this lasted about 5 minutes, but it was really agonizing. DDR also gives me a dry mouth from all the fast inhaling.

I am Iron Man!

Meh, not much for injuries here, othere than the occasional cramped quad or calf, and the fact that I can't play after 3-3.5 hours because my feet hurt so bad (damn lack of arches).
