Anyone know the best way to mod a PS2?

I'm planning on buying PIU Exceed when it comes out for PS2, only problem is that my PS2 is American.

I know absolutely jack-squat about mod chips and the like, if anyone can offer advice is to how they have modified there's and what works, please tell me and I'll buy whatever's needed.

DDR Extreme Japan wouldn't be too bad to order too now that I think about it....
