I was in band in elementary school and jr high, and I picked up ddr pretty fast... however, I have friends who are still struggling with 1 foot beginners after several days playing ddr, and they were in band longer then I was.

It would be different for each person I guess. I was in band (And still am) for about 3 years. I have been getting better, but I don't think it has to do with band. It might work on your accuracy just a little... |

Here's what I think about all this business.
Playing DDR is, sadly, a skill that is used for only one thing: playing DDR. For the most part, being good at DDR doesn't make you any better at ballroom dance, ballet, riverdance, musical instruments, running, jumping or anything. It pretty much teaches you to stomp on arrows and that is it. On the other side of the coin, do other skills make you better at DDR? My answer is, not really. I think that when you first start out, or when you play light, a good sense of rhythm gives you a bit of a boost, but after that there are only two things that determine how quickly you pick up on DDR: 1) How much you play and 2) how quickly you learn. Whatever, that's just what I think. _________________

ACTUALLY....
DDR can make you a lot healthier person and can also give you more endurance for almost any activity you do in your life if you play it hard enough. I haven't lost any weight through DDR, but I feel that i have more endurance in running lately (i've been playing 10's quite often). |

Knowing the rythem and doing it are two completely different thngs. You may have a better sence oftiming but it surely dosen't help with foot eye coordination. It's kinda like I know when to hit it but I can't make me feet do it. _________________

Oh yeah, forgot about that. But I was talking more mentally. Yeah, it can make you healthier and maybe have more endurance, but the skill of DDR doesn't really transfer over to anything as far as I can tell. _________________

Personally, I have a really good sense of rhythm so I'm quite good at doing DDR and sightreading. Then again, the fact that I played Stepmania for 3 months could have something to do with the fact that I started DDR on 4 footers... _________________

personaly i think it could help, cause wen i watch people who are first starting to play ddr they always look down to make sure there hitting the arrow or something, i dunno, so if u were in a band it would probably make it easier for someone to start playing ddr, but later on it wouldnt be that much help i think......of course i could be entirely wrong because ive never even seen a band. _________________

I've been in band since 4th grade, i'm in college now. I picked up DDR really fast.
I'd also like to add that DDR can help you with your timing. At least when I play, i'm consitently subdividing (counting in my head) 8th notes or triplets or whatever the common pattern maybe. It's helped out with my internal timing thats for sure. |

i've been in band for about 4 1/2 years. i picked up DDR much quicker than a lot of my friends, because of counting and sub-dividing in my head. one of my friends isnt in band and is about as good as me, but my other friend who also isnt in band has been playing for 9 months and still cant pass 3-4 footers. _________________

Music and stuff can help beginners understand the concept that the music is there for a reason (Some people don't even notice the music, so they can't dance to the beat. ). Once that is understood, then you're on your own. Skill, not band, will help you after that. |

I played stepmania on the keyboard for a while (couple weeks) before I actually got into DDR, and I started off on standard ><. If you ever need practice with your timing/reading the arrows, use stepmania with the keyboard :O |

I know being in band and/or a drummer has helped me, with the rhythms and eye foot coordination among other things that have been previously mentioned. Of course, almost everyone else I know who plays plays a musical instrument of sorts. |

Actually, both kind of helped each other out. Drumming first taught me how to keep a beat, which helped me progress in DDR, which in turn helped me out with band. So i give credit to both. _________________

I've been in Band/Music Theory for over 4 years, and I started DDR on Maniac (Yes, and it was Mr. Wonderful <_<)
It boils down to this - DDR, as well as all Bemani, are MUSIC games.
With all music, you have Rhythm (Yes, CORRECT spelling)
With the ability to play a musical insturment, and excell at it, you have a bigger advantage of picking up a multi-tasking rhythm game.
Like for me, I play Alto Sax and Piano for a little over 4 years.
When playing, you sight-recognize the notes, know what key to press, focus on the conductor, tap your foot in time, keep good tone, listen to others around you and blend, and read around the notes (i.e. accents, cres. dim. etc.) That happens all in under a second.
Also, about 6 months ago, I got sheet Music to bag for my sax. After playing it many times through, I went to the arcade and passed it 1x with a B.. First time accutally attemping it.
Music = DDR
therefore
Music Theroy and comprehention = The upper hand. |

Meh. I disagree. I have played piano for 14 years, and I feel that my musical ability ditched me after 4 footers. I still learned DDR way faster than most people, but that's just because I'm awesome. _________________
