According to namco arcade operators, namco basically said "Screw you KOA, we can buy machines in bulk from japan and china for 1500, instead of 15K from you guys". So there is one key to the operation shut down.

*sigh*.

Pop'N Music was released in the USA, and a few machines wandered here. Pop'n only recently got popular in japan (Like, Way popular like DDR was). Pop'N USA Sucked a lot, so there where only a few here. It was expensive and quircky. There wasn't a lot of interest in the game for people in the USA to import it, unlike Para Para, Beatmania, Beatmania III and GF/DM. Beatmania IIDX, although popular, is FREAKING EXPENSIVE. That is the one reason why no one has it.

Now, KOJ won't sell to distributors, you can only buy machines through them. This prevents bootlegging and machines ending up in the USA. KOJ inspects arcades to make sure that machines AND upgrade kits make it to that arcade.

1. Dictionary can help.
2. A bootleg is usually an illigal copy of something. Most DDR machines have bootleg copies of the Dance Dance Revolution software in them.

The word bootleg refers to a copy of something that was created and sold illegally. For example, going to a live concert and recording the music there would produce a bootleg live recording that violates the musician's copyright on their music.

Piracy is when unauthorized duplicates are made of a copyrighted work. This is what is really happening with Konami's video games however we use the term bootlegs because of the way the pirated copies are being produced and sold. These Megamix discs come from experts who know exactly what they're doing and its not like you can just get a bootleg from anyone. Because it takes a 'pro' to pirate arcade software we call the 'pros' bootleggers and their upgrades the bootlegs.

(I think the word bootleg comes from the concept of smuggling stuff around in your boots.)

well i dont understand why they wouldnt release the arcade versions in the us, but they release the home versions...
Because at the time of the rise of DDR, everyone was forecasting doom and gloom about the arcade industry in the US. None of the arcade ops in the US wanted to buy a machine that didn't mesh with the long-going trend of arcade gaming - fighters and shooters.

Also, licensing the music over here would have been a nightmarish ordeal compared to Japan.
EmiOfBrie wrote:
Actually, blame Andamiro's USA operation and their suit against KoA that caused KoA to stop at DDR USA....it's the same reason why you don't see domestic-release home versions of PIU.
I pretty well debunked this a while back, as Konami won the suits with extreme prejudice.
EmiOfBrie wrote:
I also have a pet theory that, despite DDR losing popularity in Japan, KCET released DDR's 6, 7, and 8 because they unofficially knew that the USA market would buy the machines the Japanese market wouldn't.
Yeah, I think a lot of people see it that way.

By "letting" the machines wander over here, Konami weasels its way out of a pile of international licensing fees for the music.

This is why Konami will never officially acknowledge any US DDR arcade games other than USA Mix - Acknowledging their existence indicates willful negligence of their contract violations.

I think you are refering to a different suit, however there were multiple ones and news stories seem to point out that each company won some crap and it seemed to go back and fourth and blah blah blah and somewhere along the line the truth got lost... lol

Anyhow Konami didn't let the machines wander over here... I believe some of the more popular arcades here just imported the game used and popularity just spread or something... because once a game is old and not worth as much as it used to be I think an arcade would consider selling it to anyone willing to offer whatever they can get for it... but now that I think about it... there is no other arcade game with such bootleg problems... (but I'd love to get my hands on the Technomotion files!)

You know what we could use? A good reference somewhere that contains everything that anyone following dance games needs to know about the suit that Konami initially brought on Andamiro. Long story short, Cutriss was right.

This is the long story. down.gif down.gif If you want to skip it its off-topic anyway. If you want to reply to it then start a new topic.

No, the truth did not get lost. The "blah blah blah" and "the crap" is entirely due to two things:

1. The two companies settled.
2. Fans made up stories.

Your story is pure #2. This is what we know about the settlement:
- Konami's victory was that they won royalties from Andamiro.
- Andamiro's victory was that they were allowed to continue buissness.

Konami's side of the story is here:
http://www.konami.co.jp/press/2000/03/050/r.12.03.31-e.html
http://www.konami.co.jp/press/2001/06/078/r.13.06.08-e.html
http://www.konami.co.jp/press/2002/08/018/r.14.08.19-e.html

Andamiro does not mention the lawsuits or the settlement at all on their website.

Andamiro accepted such a crap settlement because they proposed it. Imagine if Andamiro had ended up losing in court like these people:
http://www.konami.com/en/news/topics/020909/index-e.html
http://www.konami.com/en/news/topics/030117/index-e.html

If this had happened to Andamiro then they would have been forbidden to continue producing PIU. Furthermore, Konami could have even seeked a remedy which would have required the destruction of the PIU units that Andamiro had sold, just like in this case. If that seems overly harsh and disgusting to you then you don't know how the law works. This is the law in just about every developed country. Long story short, copyright infringment has very steep penalties. Don't do it.

If you're wondering why Konami didn't just sue everyone and why PIU was the only dance game ever sued by Konami its because PIU resembled DDR very closely. Not only in the design of it but also in the physical implementation. A game as different as say, Ez2Dancer for example, is so different that it is not copyright (or patent) infringement. Konami doesn't exactly own the dance genre but when it comes to arcade machines that look like DDR machines and games that function just like DDR then Konami has some rights.

(EZ2DJ is another game that is borderline infringement but it is still just different enough from Beatmania to be considered original. If you understand why, then good. If you don't understand why then compare the two games side by side and find the important differences.)

The megamix at my arcade is horrible. It has nothing unlocked(working on that) and usually when I do Maxx Unlimited on heavy at an arcade, i get a A, B , or C. But due to it being offbeat, i dont even pass it... E2.gif

There are differences. They're just subtle (in Megamix anyway). And Megamix was just the launching pad for other bootlegging efforts which have been more elaborate. Which we also discuss here.

Well .. We have a Megamix here, but I don't know how to do the 10% - 20% speed increase in the songs..

When I tried selecting something other than heavy mode, nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Try reading.

Extreme Plus has the speed hack. Megamix does not.

My friend saw some paperwork saying that Megamix is licensed by KoA as a legit upgrade.

Namco's corporate offices think the same thing for some reason, but no, it's not. For one thing, it looks entirely unprofessional ("DON'T FALL OFF!!" is rather dumb). For another, aside from the graphics hacks, it has *nothing* to distinguish it from Extreme. All the songs/courses are identical. Why would they go through the effort and expense of creating a new version that doesn't really have anything new and has a marquee/in-game graphics which look like crap?

I don't mean to insult you here, but please - common sense.

Yes, true, but that doesn't quite get rid of the evidence of the purchase information from KoA themselves.

Counterfeit?

Let us not forget that the arcade division of KoA closed like two years ago.

To add this up, your friend saw paperwork for the purchase of an unofficial product from a division of a company that no longer exists.

I'll second Cutriss on that order of some common sense.

Let's at least hope that if this story is even true that the bootleggers can fake an invoice better than they can fake a mix. :P
