Hi: I want to build a homepad, but I want to ask a few questions before I start one. I searched for my answers in this forum and read both the stepmania and homepad website, but I couldn't find it (or its vague), so if anyone here can help me out, I would really appreciate it.

1. Both homepad and rip tide's design incorporate a psx controller. Can I use an xbox controller instead (cus i have an xbox)?

2. I want to also use it on my computer for stepmania also, is there something to convert to regular usb connection? The closest converter is the game elements (listed on stepmania's website). It has psx -> xbox -> gc outputs though. Or psx to usb converter, but it doesn't include xbox connection

3. Does anyone know the details of xbox or psx usb interface? Maybe I can just convert the interfaces and signals myself.

Thanks in advace!

~Darkwalk~

Well, from what I've heard, you can use a MadCatz BeatPad Pro which has both an Xbox and a PS2 connector. That way you can play Xbox, and use the ps2 connector to hookup a USB adapter, I suppose.

A Guide on that can be found here at Tolookah's website.

Yes, you can use an Xbox pad.

You don't need an Xbox-USB adapter as the Xbox pad connector is in fact a usb with a different housing. Look for tutorials at xbox-scene.com, its VERY easy.

You can also play stepmania on the Xbox if you have it modded. I'm not taking about StepmaniaX I'm talking about the real thing. To play the latest stepmania alpha you only have to grab the sources from the stepmania CVS and compile it. I'm not sure if the actual revision will compile but the ones from one month ago work fine.

Hi I was wondering if I can use .25 inch plexiglass because I can't find any .22 inch plexglass at lowes.

Thanks

Of course you can use it, why not? I mean, It's a home-made pad that YOU are making. You don't have do everything like the tutorials. You can try to change some materials or modify something that you dislike.

If you were talking about a thinner plexi I could understand your question (maybe it could break, etc) but I don't see the problem in with this. Well, you obviously have to be concious of the extra thickness on the rest of the measures.

How did you mount your "show me your moves" picture to the middle? Did you put lucite/plexiglass over it? Very cool looking design by the way. E1.gif Also, how does one open the .psd template file if he doesn't have Photoshop. Thanks!

You can't open a .psd in anything but Photoshop, but whoever created the template (or anyone who can open the template in Photoshop) can resave it as a TIFF or a JPEG, and then send it to you which you can open!

Actually, not quite. It's several layers of the different elements of the arrows. You can mix/match them to make the graphics you want, and I suppose saving each one as a .gif or something would work. So long as the transparency is kept.

Oh...I didn't know it was a layered file...then no, you have to have Photoshop to open it. Saving each layer as a GIF (or any picture format) will flatten it and you won't be able to keep the transparency. You could always use the computers at Kinko's, they have Photoshop installed on them and then you could print it right there. Of course they charge per minute for the use of the computer, so it depends on how bad you want cool arrows. biggrin.gif

I Googled Madcatz Beatpad Pro and I got Tolookah's website (which I already read and thanks for that info!), but no place that sells the thing. Any ideas about where I could get one, because that sounds like the best idea for me to get the pad how I want it.

I saw a Beatpad Pro at my BestBuy, and another at my Fry's Electronics. You might want to check those stores.

Also: I meant saving each layer as a gif, and then mix/match them in a different program.

Edit: It's a lot easier to find when you search for Bead Pad as two seperate words. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%22beat+pad+pro%22

You'd have to purchase it, actually, from http://www.adobe.com.

As much as im sure we don't condone piracy here, you could run into bestbuy, grab it and run ^^

or... buy it from any other people who sell it.

Okay, as I'm learning more and more about my pad and how it's going to work, I'm learning more and more that I'm thinking I want a control box for it (probably the ter ter box), but I have a couple dumb questions. First, can the box be created to support ps2 and x-box? If so, can someone briefly explain it to me? Second, will I be able to plug both of my home made pads into the one box? Thanks for the info! With the MadCatz Beat Pad Pro's control board you can plug into both XBox and PS2. There is info about that here at Tolookah's website.
So, yes, you can plug one box into both consoles.

As for both being plugged into the control box, I don't think that's possible unless you put 2 control boards into the box, which again, I don't think would work unless you had a clever way to keep them seperated so they didn't touch and short out or something.

Big duh to myself for not thinking of using the words beat pad separately. Thanks for pointing that out.

Okay, now that I've seen this thing and it's just like the Beat Pad I have for XBox only you can use it with both consoles (again, another duh to myself), I have a question. I've read past posts and there seems to be a consensus that using soft pad wires is bad. Why is it recommended to use the Beat Pad Pro control box despite that it's a soft pad? Is the wiring better?

Once I get all these pesky questions out of the way, I can start building! Thanks for the help!

P.S. on the Photoshop arrow thing....you could always put together every possible configuration of colors, etc. and save those individually as gifs. Then instead of one template to download, people can select the arrow style and just download what they'd like. That sounds like a huge pain, but a solution! As far as buying Photoshop, if anyone is a student, they offer an educational discount.

I think the reason this is recommended is because it's one of the few ways to actually make your pad read as a pad and not a controller on XBox Live, and you're able to include the Headset plug. Also, I remember reading that the XBox controller buttons were pressure sensitive, so that wouldn't work like a PS or PS2 controller.

using the inside of the softpad == bad
Using the circuitboard of the softpad == good

the flimsy filmy material inside the pad isn't salvageable for use in a hardpad

(hope that clears things up)

Has anyone built a multi system (PC, PS, and xbox) metal ddr pad? I've been thinking about how it could be done properly. Would need a controler for all 3 systems, but how to connect the one set of arrows to all three controlers with out conflict is the question. I'm just curious to see if it's been done, else maybe i'll be the first.

Okay, I'm having a lot of trouble getting the pad to work from soldering.

In this picture, I:

1. Tried the middle circle to solder the one ground wire to. It resulted in the left one working, and the others to not work.

2. I tried soldering the ground the ground wire to the right one, it let the right one work, so I thought "Hey, why don't I just solder one ground wire to each one, since the right one works with a ground wire to it."

3. I then soldered a ground wire to the left one as you can see, and it cancelled out the right one working, and made the left one work.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! PLEASE HELP!

(I'm using ddrhompead's design.)

Thanks,

Mike
