Anyone remember/own this music-based game?
http://www.tecmogames.com/games/unison.asp
I read in a magazine last week that they're bringing the sequel to the US this coming year....[I googled it today and couldn't find any other info about it, but I tried ]
I'm very surprised they even made a sequel because the first one didn't get such great reviews and the gameplay format is very awkward. _________________

I have the first game and thought it was fun. I am interested in a sequel but it's not something I would pay more than $10 or $20 for though (I paid $7 shipped for the first game from EBay) |

Unison did way better in Japan then here, for obvious reasons. I'm sure Unison would do way better if it were to have been released now, rather then 2001. I love that game I'm so mad I sold it...
I really hope Unison 2 comes out. _________________

Unison 2 that's so cool. I liked the first one even with it's corny storyline it was still interesting. |

Played the original. Did a review on GameFAQs. Was a long time ago, though. I'm glad to see a follow-up on it, if for no other reason that I'm running out of PS2 games I'd like to rent. (For that matter, why am I seemingly the only person who recommends renting games? It doesn't have to be all or nothing, you know.)
Yeah, the storyline was silly and there was no depth, but I thought it was fun change of pace, and definitely good for a rental. I never saw it as a substitue for DDR, so I wasn't disappointed.
Looks like I'm going to be visiting Tecmo's website for the first time in a while. |

One factor for Unison not selling was it's price. I recall the game stayed at 49.99 for a long time at EB before the price ever dropped. The same thing happened with Rez. Why buy a $50 music game when you can get an EA franchise game for the same price?
Anyway, while I don't mean to hijack, I like to actually own games. Even if I don't play them alot after I rent them. The fact that I actually own it means alot to me. I own Unison. I own Rez. I own IIDX 4th Style. I'm very happy that I have these harder to find games. Sure, I could pirate them, but I'd not have the satisfaction that I have. And yeah, most places wouldn't rent those 3 games anyway, but I'm like that with all my games. Just using those as examples. I guess I just collect them. I only wish I was like that (or could have afforded to be like this) when I was in high school or when I was a poor college student. I'd have a lot larger library. |

I got my copy at Game Stop for $10.00 but I'm still looking for REZ though. |

I agree that the $49.99 price of Unison didn't help the game sell. I think it should have been released at a MSRP of $19.99 or $29.99. Since the game was released when most PS2 games were $49.99, a $19.99 or $29.99 game might have been a nice price point for people to notice the game.

I don't rent games because when rentals are $6 and stores like Best Buy and Circuit City are always having $5 game sales, I'd rather buy a game than spend $6 to rent any game. |

YoshiFan - Erm...I live near a Circuit City, and it never had a $5 clearance that I remembered. (CompUSA's had some clearances, but never anything all that great...that's why they're letting them go so cheap.) Don't really feel guilty about renting games like Silent Scope, which are only fun for about a week anyway.
Anyway, the news I got was that Unison got some positive reviews...there's one on the box, fer chrissake (never a good sign, BTW)...which might be why it stayed at $50 for so long. I agree that that's way too high for such a limited game; $35 would've been pushing it.
Tecmo's website has come up empty, so for now, I just have to be happy that there is a new offbeat PS2 game coming out soon, something the system could use some more of. |

I second both these points.
Why is it now $5.99 + tax to rent a game anywhere? Not to mention, I don't really need it for 5 days...if it's an arcade-type game, 2 days will be enough, and if it's a longer game, 5 days won't be enough anyway. In this day and age, when 90% of all games drop to $20 or less eventually anyway, it should cost less to rent 2 or 3 games than to buy 1. Or perhaps rentals of old games should cost less?
And yes, I've taken in two Circuit City blowouts. Frequency, Capcom vs. SNK 2 for Xbox, both Buffy games, Dark Cloud 2, Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, Beyond Good and Evil, and Clock Tower 3 were just some of my $5 games...and that's not even half of 'em. It's much harder to find the time to play the damn things...
...and that's another reason why rentals shouldn't be $6.
Unison, to me, was... too simple. I absolutely loved the style of the animation, and the corny dialogue (and dubbing), and the characters, and the funny story...but the gameplay was simply too easy. I was done with it in a matter of hours. I didn't have to memorize anything; even on the more challenging bonus songs, I could just attempt to follow the guides on the screen and pass with a decent grade on my first try. For a sequel, either the judging has to be more harsh, or there needs to be something else added to make it more complicated.

I really hope they don't butcher this in localization like they did the first one. I actually enjoyed it(though I never once saw it cost that much[got it for $15]), but it's pretty insulting that all the original music was removed in favor of crappy American replacements.
One exception, guiltiest pleasure ever: Country Grammar has one of the most fun routines in the game.
Well, Night of Fire too.
Anyway, can't wait.. I bet it'll be dirt cheap like Katamari Damacy was, too. _________________

The story concept seems a lot like Jet Grind Radio.... |
