Weston: Alrighty! I feel much better now. Yeah, I understand perfectly that metal on metal's gonna make some noise...I suppose what I was thinking was if somebody had tried to put some sort of soft, conductive material in between the contacts, though I realize that that could very, very easily cause unwanted response from the arrows. A softer metal would probably reduce noise too, though I wouldn't know what to go for...copper? meh, it's no biggie. I'll just try to keep the distance between them as small as possible. Thanks for all your information!
aaaand..._ter:
Is that modification even necessary anymore? I thought that a while back RedOctane revised their pad design, replacing the foil with sheet metal just like you suggested. Idunno about other pads, though... _________________

Hey Raven,
Many pads, mostly older, MyMyBox, Cypergames, BNS, Etc still used the foil tape. I revised the site because it's still getting more webtraffic than any of my other sites =/ Heh ... like this: http://www.rufus3.com/movies.cgi?3 _________________

Other important buttons are Select (cancel / open edit menu), Triangle (cancel), and Start (sort songlist).
EDIT: The cancelation buttons work when you hold them down for a second. |
Oh okay, see I'm thinking in X-Box pad mode (the Kanomi Stay Cool green and red pad) where A (top right) is confirm or select song or option or whatever and B (top left) is cancel, or go back, or whatever while in the menus, and then to cancel a song once you've started you simply hold the start button (which is above the A button further in the top right). So, to confirm/select a song/option I would want the X or O button, and to cancel/go back/menu whatever, I'd want the Triangle button? But as suggested, put something other than a triangle over it? So I could put "Back" in the top left corner and "Select" in the top right, or "Cancel" and "Confirm" or something.. without being too lame I hope. I'm thinking for my first pad, I might just have to do the arrows just to be sure I get things right. If anyone has any suggestions for me, they'd be greatly appreciated! I'm a nub, I'm learning, but I'm determined!
Oh, one other thing, I asked this in the imaging forum but haven't gotten a response, so maybe someone can tell me, who/what do you use for printing your graphics? Do you do them yourself at home or have someone professionally print them? Also, is there a site where I can find some graphics to choose from, or should I try creating my own? Many thanks for the many answers! |

You can usually walk into a kinkos, get on one of their computers, download the images from the first post of this thread, and print them on their nicest color laser printer, using 11x17 or Tabloid paper to get the whole image. Ask them for help.
You can't print them at home without creating a tacky divide down the middle of the pad. _________________

unless!... you have a printer like mine... (HP Deskjet1120C) it's a wide carriage, can print up to 13 inch wide sheets ^^ they still make other ones like it i think, useful to own... _________________

Which homemade metal mat design is better? I've been thinking of making one, of my own, and I'm wondering if Riptides design is better than this other one. I'm leaning towards Riptide's cause its extremely arcade-like.
OK, I finally posted this in the right thread. |

Can someone point me in the direction of pink/purple arrow graphics? And are there green ones? I'm thinking of like in this picture: http://server5.uploadit.org/files/Ulala321-padfinal2.jpg
Next question, should I really bother building my own pad? Is it worth the time and dedication required to learn skills I don't have? Is it worth it to build your own with your own buttons and colors? Or should I just buy a pad off ebay? What do you guys think? |

its worth it....theres basically only three choices you can choose from.
1. Cobalt Flux - rounded to about $300
2. Red Octane/BNS - average is $150
3. Build your own $125+ depending on the materials
Building your own is cheaper AND you can fix it if anything is messed up. You know how it works. _________________

I think building a pad builds alot of skills, which can be applied elsewhere, so if you are wondering on the learning experience, its a gateway project into home repair ^^ (or just a fun thing to do if you wanna play with heavy tools... my school has a machine shop, metal cutting band saws are awesome) _________________

when i built my metal pad i used a bansaw to cut the plexiglass, and even tho it worked it didn't end up very smooth at the edges.. or super straight. does anyone know a better way to cut the plexiglass arrows? i hear home depot does it but when i went there to buy the materials like a year ago i think they said they couldn't do it. maybe im just confused.. |

Cool, thanks guys, I'll definitely invest in building my own. I'll probably be here for awhile with questions. Which, sorry to ask again:
Thanks much guys! |

I would have to say building my pad was more fun than functionally serving as a cheaper pad. I built the homebuilt pad although alot of things did not go right it was more fun than anything else. and know i have taken the pad apart and stolen some ideas from so other designs and i am gonna make a combo of some different designs i'll let you guys know how it turns out
oh and Ulala just use Photoshop to change color : ) |

Alrighty, sorry these aren't resized yet but It's late. EDIT: Scores resized.
I completely revised my pad design, a 1.5" pad with external control box, with a new trigger mechanism, similar to blue beefman's but not quite.
http://www.rufus3.com/ddr/pad/new/P1010074.JPG
You'll notice there's no screws (as part of the trigger that is), no solder, and no sheet metal to cut. The only four components are stranded wire, angle brackets, and scotch foam mounting tape, as well as 3/8" latex hose to keep the pad up.
When putting the pad together my girlfriend was asleep so I was unable to test the pad initially, so I upgraded 3 of the arrows with *absolutely no playtesting*. Just upgrading one after another, checking the connections to make sure electricity was getting through the wires, but not testing the responsiveness of the pad.
I finally toted my pad to my next door neighbor's apartment (conveniently enough my ex-roomate) and plug the pad in.
These are the scores from the first TEST RUN of the trigger, no calibration, no tweaking, no prior test runs, but rather the very first three songs tested on the new pad design sans adjustment phase.

As you can see the pad performed incredibly for it's first test. The fact that I'm out of practice only contributes to the incredulous nature of their functionality.
Hopefully I'll find somebody locally who wants me to build them one from scratch and I'll make a guide in the process. _________________

hey could you tell me how quiet the pad is? like since it seems like their isn't much metal on metal pounding, it should be a bit quieter than riptide's pad should be right? if not then do you suppose adding insulation foam under the arrow panel would soften the sound? like the kind under CG pads and i think under RO pads. there would still be the sound of the feet tapping on the pad but that sound sound's good. it's the metal on metal sound that kind of annoys me.
oh could you write the guide for this pad anyway instead of waiting for someone to ask you to build the pad for you? i mean the building of the pad would not be much different from riptides, but the arrow internals would be different. so you could actually turn it into a mod per say. i mean i think a lot of people would like you to tell us how you made a seemingly perfect contact system without screws and soldering. soldering especially for me. ;; |

hey do you know if it's possible to find a store that could print the image or design straight onto the acrylic? that would be awesome....
oh and i'm trying to get riptide's arrow designs but right now all i can use are the ones that he has on his site. they're not the exact replicas of the designs he has on his pad because the white border doesn't go on the outer edges of the arrow panel but surrounds the chinese character in a rectangular octagon kind of shape. does anyone know of a way to create the design that riptide had on his pad? if they can i would really appreciate it if they could post it online so i could save it onto a disc or sumthing and give it to some printing company to print it for me. |

Okay, I went out and bought some materials, and after looking through my instructions I have a question. Is there a way to wire my pad so it can plug into one of those control boxes that plug into a PSX/PS2 and an X-Box? Or do I have to wire the pad for just one system? So I guess what I'm trying to ask is, can I wire my pad to plug into this:
And what is that port called, what do I need to know about it, etc? Thanks again for the help. |
