well you need to trace the keyboard matrix back to the pads in order to complete the circuits for the keys you want
google it, don't expect to be spoonfed |
Dude, I'm 13 years old. I don't know how all the curcuitry in a keyboard works...yet...I want to hear from people with experience where you can generally find the ground contact, and the contacts for each button. Not research on a search engine when I have the opportunity to get the information here on this available resource. What is this thread for? Help, advice and for getting "spponfed" as it were. |

I used a keyboard for my pad as im using stepmania.
First you gotta open it up. You should see two plastic sheets with circuits running along them, sandwitched together. this is the key matrix. find where the buttons you want to use are i.e. up, down, left, right, etc. follow the circuit (line) from the button on the top layer of plastic to the chip in your keyboard and solder 1 wire to that leg. Next follow the circuit from the bottom layer and solder to that leg. These two wires can now be connected to your pad the same way as a sony controler. do the same thing for the other buttons you are going to use and your done.
NOTE: Because of the way the keyboard matrix works, some buttons will double up (lead back to the same leg) dont worry about this, just take note of that wire and use it for both buttons. I think almost all of the arrow buttons double up.
CAREFUL: Soldering directly to the chip leg can fry your keyboard if you take too long. If your not an experianced solderer I would sugest soldering to a different point if possible. If not wait for the chip to cool down between soldering.
PeaceOut

sight...middle school kids...
ok "dude" mr. 13 year old thinks he smart because he is building a ddr pad...when i was your age (2 years ago...) i was building a MAME machine!!!! ...
EVERY keyboard will be different in some way...every different model of a keyboard that is...go to www.arcadecontrols.com if you want to learn about how to hack a keyboard...but, from my experiences i DON'T recomend using a keyboard...why? because of a problem called ghosting...not a good thing...long story short certain keys will get stuck "down" and that is bad for ddr... let me take a guess and say since you have your little middle school heart set on using a keyboard you want to use this on a computer? if your computer has a MIDI port or a GAME port (same thing) then i would suggest using that...you won't get ghosting roubles like you would with a keyboard or a usb gamepad...if you DO want to go the usb gamepad route or the keyboard route make SURE you can go crazy with the keys and press several at the same time without one being stuck "down"
now that i'm done ranting i commend you for doing this and being interested in electronics...keep learning! its sooooo useful for building REALLY fun things such as a full sized arcade in your room!
be cool, be a geek if anyone makes fun of you they are f**kheads!!!!!!!!!1111 _________________

here is the website i used for making my ddr pad http://wrongcrowd.com/arcade/ydkjp2.shtml
the only reason i am posting this is because i gave the wrong url in the first place, just follow the directions but insted fint the left, right, up down, esc, and enter keys. _________________

Why does the the actual keyboard key matter, I thought you solder to the matrix board.
I tested out all the paths manually in my PS sony controller, and found out the ground and the directional arrows, so I am using that now, it seems like it will work better. So thanks for the help, but no need anymore, controller sounds better.
And I'm so excited, the pad's almost completed! I have the first arrow finished, and I can hook it up to the voltage tester, and it is pretty sensitive, and works very well! Sweeeet....
I'll probably build a second one when I'm done...the first one only cost $70 Canadian...
(Lucite and Brackets practically equalled that entire $70)
Thankyou to all who have helped! |

neato! glad i talked you out of it ! the ps controller is also great for stepmania if you build the parallel interface...pretty neat as well...POST SOME PCI OF YOUR PAD! i really want to see it! i built my first pad when i was about 13...i'm on my 5th revision to it i've even designed my own that were really awsome... _________________

Hey this question has probably been asked already, but I can't find it anywhere. I built a DDR pad using riptide design (it works great), but I want to make it quiet. Is there a way to do this. I was wondering if i could put 1/4 weatherstripping on the contacts will i still get a connection to trigger the arrow??? If this is not good is there a way and if so tell me. Thanks for your help. |

i have a theory as to why it is loud...i'm building a riotide pad as well (and so far LOVE IT!) and i THINK the reason it is loud is because of the screws...that is a LOT of force on such a small area and the fact that it is hollow under the arrow doesn't help...my suggestion? fill the bottom part of the arrow with something...unless you want it to be lighted...in which case you are SOL my friend.... _________________

Thanks nerd of nerds for the tip i might put insulation in the space it might deaden the sound. There is another question though. I used riptides design, but i took a circuit board out of a soft pad (konami) and soldered wires to it, they are thicker than phone cable, bell wire is what my dad calls it. I plugged the controller in to play stepmania. Here is where i gets weird, I can map all the buttons fine, but when I start a song after the first 4 steps or so, the usb adapter acts as if is dissconnected and therefore not activating the steps. Could there be a voltage problem or something, I am really confused, I also reinstalled the driver DDR xpad and still happens. ANy input to this problem could be great, cause I want to play some freakn DDR. Thanks for your help |

I completed my pad around may. But one problem that arised that really isn't a problem is this:
I was messing with my pad for the upcoming of DDREX, so I was wondering why my lights on the Ter-Ter box never worked. Do I have to hook up some electrical system to them? Battery or something?
(It's for the PS2)
Thx for your help. :-d |

well ter ters design doesnt light up, the buttons take 12 volts; which you arent going to get from the pad itself. There is another design out there that is a box for xbox that is almost identical and that one tells you how to hook up the adapter and a switch, and how to hook up the buttons.

hope that answered your question _________________

hey. i was wondering if i could add power to the lights using the control board from my old CG (cypher games) metal pad. the LED lights still work from it so they have to get their power from the control board right? the control board plugs into a control box which plugs into the ps2 so essentially power is coming from the ps2 meaning no external battery or outlet power needed! yay!!! unforunately using the control board from my old pad would also mean i wouldn't be able to install lights with a higher voltage requirement than the LED lights were right? that means no fairly bright lights.....damn......LED lights are pretty bright when the lights are off though i guess..... |

that sounds odd...a lot of usb playstation adapters can be pretty finicky... i would suggest building one for your paralell port...it isn't that hard actually...at radioshack there are some printer port connectors that you just have to crimp the wires to... very simple...and they work great! but i had 1 problem on mine...i think it wasn't the adapter it was me tho. but, when i played ddr for the first couple times i could NOT hit the fricken doubles...NEVER! my friend could but i couldn't...it was more than likely me...
in short, use a printer port adapter or buy one, they work like a charm! _________________

i know that this is a little off the topic, but your talking about parallel port adapter, well i built one and i cant get it to work, i know that i built it right, maybe the problem is that you have to confiqure it from the admin account, i have xp pro. Please offer some help.

you say you are using xp pro...are you trying to use direct pad pro with that? if so it doesn't work with xp...think you are SOL? think again!
download and install this:
http://www.psxpad.com/index_e.php
and if you are still having troubles then make a new adapter following this guide:
http://www.emulatronia.com/reportajes/directpad/psxeng/index.htm _________________

hey thanks for posting a reply, and yes i know that psx pad is the only one compatible with xp, and i used that emulatronica site to build my adapter, i was very careful that i didnt get wires switched and that i didnt get the diodes to hot. I think that it may be that i am trying to configure that controll from an account that isnt the administrator. I notice that whenever i press a button on the controll, a led ont the controll lights up, so i know that i i hooked it up right.....right.
Thanks _________________
