Just wondering if this'd be a nice idea... and worth it.
Mm. I just got back into using Stepmania (after giving up with 3 crapped out adapters a bit ago T_T) and am currently in the process of re... doing my bedroom.
S'not big, but with my armoir gone and a much more compact desk, I have lots of space. So, being that this is my personal domain and such, I was thinking of a DDR area. box. thing.
I do have a large monitor; 21" CRT, which is very very nice (and big o.o) and stereo surround sound, which makes for kick-buttocks music. I've been planning on building a DDR HomePad but gave up because I'm too stupid to get past the first part... so, I'm probably going to buy a metal pad.
Would it be worth it to get a metal pad (any suggestions on good ones to get?) and use up pretty much all the space in my room for that? I don't do much besides program and DDR and whatever, so minus the refrigerator and toilet this could be the hole I never leave :o
but... again, I do have a small room; with a metal pad, I would only have a small area to walk in and out. ;_; |

You should get a Cobalt Flux if you really want a metal pad, they're the best metal pads out there for DDR. Also, it is quite heavy but you can move it on its side for stowage or something like that.
Oh and this probably doesn't belong in DDR Chit-Chat, and not even in its own thread too. This could've easily gone in to a sticky called "Metal Pad Discussion" in the DDR Console Forums. Kthnx. _________________

....this is about a metal pad....? wow, someone missed the point of my topic. your name seems to have just suited you a bit better.
I'm on a "budget" of ~$200, and I'm not even sure I'm going to get a metal pad. Looking at prices, I'm liking the price of RedOctane Ignition pads, are those any good?
Oh, and for those that don't get what I'm asking, I'm wondering if it's worth the space and money to turn my rather small bedroom into a "DDR Location" - I'm not sure if there's a point where I'll get bored with it or anything :| |

well hopefully those red octane pads work for you, cause when i bought mine they used foil in them as conductors so they would lose there "sensorness" after an month"strangely enough when the warranty was up" but now i think they replaced it with sheet metal so i would think its good now _________________

The Red Octane pads have an arcade feel to them that blow away the flat design of the Cobalt Flux pads. However I chose the Cobalt Flux pads anyways because they now support PIU play. The flat design of the CF is kind of a pain, but it after a medium while your skills adapt to them. Also the Red Octane pads have lots of technical problems with the pads themselves, because they are arcade like.
So is building a gaming room actually worth it though? I would say no. Unless you expect other people to come over to regularally enjoy your set up with you, I can forsee you getting bored with quickly and going to the arcades more often. DDR is a very social game and the home set up oftens misses that. |

The Red Octane Ignitions are soft pads and are the best but at $100 each they're quite expensive. They use a foam inner part where you must zip the pad and stick it in. It's a good quality pad and is good if you have a big budget but don't want to go metal. _________________

Yes, but despite their high price tag they don't last very long. Most people recommend the exact advanced soft pads found at www.levelsix.com and www.buynshop.com which only cost about $35. |

DDR doesnt have to be a social game. I play at home and never got bored. _________________

Shmyes, I heard about the foil problem with the metal RedOctane pads... that's mainly why I overlooked those and was looking at the Ignition ones.

Well, from what I've seen (price-wise), the CF pads are shmexpenshiv++! The metal ones were topping $300; if I had the money to spend, I probably would. Unfortunately, I don't have a job to make money to blow ;_;
Hm, that social aspect is... sort of true. Then again, I'm really the only one that plays DDR around here; the only people I know that do only go to the arcade once every 1-2 weeks! At home is unfortunately where I do most of my playing.
Also, the fact that I can just download and add new songs whenever is really appealing. If I get bored with the song set, download new ones!
So, I'm taking it that Ignition pads are out of the question ;_;... I have a dance pad right now (well 2, 1 works, one doesn't... long story XD), a little soft one that my feet stick to and comes off the ground. That's what I'm trying to avoid... something that won't turn when I do air, and something that won't curl and make me fall down on chaotic songs.

I'm saying I'm having a great time, and if your a DDR freak like me. Willing to spend money, I'm saying go for it!!!!!!!!!!
My next agenda is to build a game room in my basement!!!!!
TV with consoles, computer, airhockey table, and weight lifting!!!!! |
Bah, I hate when this happens; completely bipolar reviews. Are the RedOctane pads extremely bulky? As in, when I wrapped up for a day, would it be possible to like... push it under my bed? If I could do that space wouldn't really be a problem...
just occured to me, the wonders of under a bed :o!
Gawd, if I had the money to make a game room, I'd like... make one! |
