My pads are starting to die. I had styrofoam insert types, sort of a cheaper version of the red octane ignition, and I'm looking to upgrade. I really don't want to spend the money required for metal pads, so I was thinking of getting something like this. Do hard plastic pads work well, and is this a relatively good deal?

Word is that they tend to crack and break fast.

IIRC, most of the people that have Ignition-style pads take the foam out immediately and then get right to modding them. I'd check the link in Rychan's sig.

Nonono please don't get them. I had them, for about a week. Now I only weigh 123 lbs, but as I played on that loud, clanky piece of poo, it cracked! I was just doing Kind Lady on Heavy too =/ They aren't worth the money or the weight, at least to me! Just a save a few extra dollars and get a quality pad =)

Well, thanks for the advice. If you're only 120 lbs and you broke them that easily, then I guess that I wouldn't have had better luck. I'm about 210 and I was going to share them with a friend who's 205. Looks like you guys saved me about $100.

I'm relatively new to this site and tried to find Rychan, but I had no luck.

Also consider the fact that they limit your stepping area. The buttons are constrained to those horrible circle "panels".

Oh...I guess she took it out of her sig anyway, but here's the text.

No, seriously, why do you?

Red Octane sells their ignitions pads $100 each... EACH. C'mon that's a lot of money for a pad that if you play at my and my friend's level is going to be torn to shreds on the inside within not even a week's use. Hell, any ignition pad you use with the foam inside you are sentencing it to death.

What's my answer, you ask... Ebay I got a PAIR (that's 2) pads for $57 AFTER shipping. "But they aren't name brand, are they going to work the same?" My first ignition lasted me 6 months, non Red Octane, I'll have to go look at the brand name at some point and fix this post with that. "Wow! How did you make it last that long?!" Before I'd bought an ignition, I played on one at my friend bossycow's house. He had them modified and informed me of how he'd done it.

When I ordered my own ignition, I refused to play on it until I had that modification done. "What's this modification and what the heck is the point of this Live Journal entry" You just answered your own question. Well ok there's another reason for this post, so I can stop writing out this damn modification for every little DDR Freak person that asks me/the boards about ignition pads.

Also, since I know that not everyone shares my opinion on RO, this modification is highly suggested for those too... My friend wore his Red Octanes out in a matter of days before doing this mod himself. Lucky for him he worked at Gamestop and could get away with exchanging his pads when it was necessary.

The wood board modification of Ignition pads

Let me first say, thank you to bossycow for enlightening me on this awesome modification and these great pads.

To the modification.
Ignition pads generally come with 1 inch thick "dense" foam to be zipped inside of the pad, don't bother with it. Measure the pad and take those measurements to a Home Depot or any other store that you can get wood from. By my experience, 3/4 inch thick particle board is the best to put inside of your pad, normal plywood will flake and splinter the inside of your pad, so far I haven't had any ill effects from it, but it isn't the greatest material to use for this. The particle board will serve two purposes, it will solidify your pad and it will weigh it down so it won't move anywhere near as much as it would normally.

There is also an alternative which is what my other pad has done to it. My first ignition came with two really thin white pieces of foam that were REALLY cheap. When I asked my dad to get me the particle board needed to modify my second pad, he got it about a half inch thick which left a lot of slack for the material of the pad to move around, so to remedy that, I put the really thin piece of foam under the board. So far it seems to be a decent alternative, though the pad doesn't weigh as much as the other so it tends to move around just a little more than the other does.

Home Depot does not do the custom cuts that are needed to make the wood fit the inside of your pad, I'm not going to speak of any other company just because I don't know for sure. I didn't do this part of the modification myself, a friend of mine did it for me and I wasn't there to see it being done. I'd assume it was a Jigsaw that he used to cut and I don't know that he sanded it down at all, I don't think the particle board would need it but this is from me who isn't all that knowledgable about such things E10.gif

Get the pads, get the wood, cut the wood to fit, slide it in, zip it up and finally enjoy!

OK, that seems to make sense. I was thinking of doing something like that, but I was afraid that having a hard surface inside rather than soft foam might be stressful on the electronic components.

Well, I guess that leaves me with one question. Can you wear shoes on a modded foam pad?

I have had a redoctane ignition pad for 3 years. I have always worn shoes on it! It still hasn't torn, or even get scuffed. I stomp that thing to death too... I bring it to school for our DDR matches, and it has worked wonderfully, and still does.

I had to take it out of my signature due to the length, it wouldn't let me have that much text -_-.

Nevermind the whole Red Octane opinion, this modification has worked well for myself and all those around here that I've shown it to.

I will try my hardest to get around to adding this to the site FAQ so that I don't have to direct people to my Live Journal just to read it, I just have the whole Physical Therapy letter I'm writing up right now. :X

I've allowed it once on mine and never again since... I'm unsure if it was just because the person I allowed to do it decided to play songs such as Max. (period) and Sakura, but I wouldn't recommend it.
