I want to be able to play Step Mania on my laptop, but I do not have a video card. Is there any version that won't waist my time but give me what I want?

Isn't a laptop without a video card a keyboard E15.gif ?

If you mean you don't have a powerful video card, then you shouldn't have trouble running stepmania at a relatively low resolution. If you mean you don't have a video card at all...you're going to have trouble with Stepmania. You're going to have trouble doing anything, for that matter.

I use it for school.

The video card in there will only run MS-Dos games, Windows 3.1 Games, some 98 Games (it's a 98). But nothing like Step Mania or Counter-Strike or Half-Life.

I just need some sort of crappy Step Mania...(I'm not buying a video card).

Try using DWI, when I still had my crappy computer it ran DWI, pretty well.

Well I can tell you that runnin Stepmania requires a lot less resources than Counterstrike, but if your computer is as old as it sounds, your video card isn't the only thing that's going to make playing Stepmania hard. I would say if you really wanna play a sim on that laptop, try DWI (I don't know much about it, can't help you there), or else settle for FFR. Based on other posts I assume you have Stepmania on a desktop somewhere, so you won't be losing that much.

Not to be anal. but EVERY computer has a video card. If they didn't, we'd have loud humming boxes.

I know that...~.~

But the point of this topic was to express the fact that my video card isn't powerful enough, not that my laptop isn't video compatible.

try running DWI in sdl mode (I think it's called). there should be another file in there that you can start up and it doesn't require hardware accelleration.

I'm not too good with computers (only 13), but my computer does have a hardware acceleration setting. Since you mentioned it, does that have anything to do with this (even though that setting only changes the speed of acceleration itself)?

And dude there, this is a homework/school laptop, I'm not going to spend money on a video card just so I can play SM on two seperate computers. I'm not that obsessed. tongue.gif

www.flashflashrevolution.com

It's a flash based version of DDR, but it is nothing compared to Stepmania or DWI. Nonetheless, it may serve as a viable substitute if you don't have any other options.

Are you using a 56k? If not, it wouldn't take more than 10 minutes (and that would be a long time) to download Stepmania and at least determine whether it will work or not. I think you are overestimating the requirements of the program, although I would obviously recommend against trying to run BG movies or characters.

If this Laptop is as old as it sounds, a video card isn't what you need to be worried about. How much system memory is there? I don't know what SM requires but I would say that if you have at least 64 MB of RAM then the machine should dedicated/share up to 4 or 8 MB for video. Just play SM at its lowest setting. It'll make it harder to see with the Letters (ie 'PERFECT' and 'Great') closer to the arrows at the top, but if i recall correctly, Konamix was the same well.

You never said that you had try to run Stepmania and it flat out didn't work. If that's the cast, I doubt DWI or any other Windows based simulator is going to be supported (simply because you're still going to need the computer to maintain decent FPS throughout playing). FFR is going to be your primary option while you're on the laptop.
