My pops and I are in the process of finishing up my first (of two, and possibly four (Damn you UM2!)) pad and we used a table saw with the blade real low to cut our plexiglass. So now we have 8 perfect 11x11 squares. _________________

Yes, completely possible, just remember it wont show up as a pad in UM/UM2 ^^ _________________

What is the weight limit like on these pads? I mean, I'm not huge or anything, but weigh about 280, and finances are definitely an issue. Would they be able to hold my weight easily (generally, I do about 8-9 feet)? |

Seven: yes, it would work, before i bought a madcatz pad to rip up, i was using a PS controller on an adapter, i would search the forums, theres a thread somewhere with all the working adapters
Wulgar: depends on which pad you make/what materials you use. I wouldn't skimp on the acrillics and go with a polycarbonate, that step alone will probably set you right (poly carbs are really tough, its quite nice) My design used polycarbonates and i had someone 300+ lbs TRYING to break an arrow... though I wish i had a camera, it was funny... We'll see if i can manage another stress test on V2 within a few weeks _________________

Yea, polycarbonate kicks butt. Although Duraplex(http://www.plaskolite.com/duraplex.htm) isn't polycarbonate, it's comparable in strength. I just use it because it's easy to find in Lowes Anyway, before I cut it with my jigsaw, but since I'm in an apartment now, I had the guy at Lowes cut it down closer to size for me. Man, let me tell you... this guy wasn't a small guy, and it took his entire body weight and some muscle to crack this stuff _after_ scoring it 8+ times with their tool. And I was watching him score it... he was putting huge pressure on that thing. Lol, so anyway... either polycarbonate or duraplex or similar strength modified acrylic will kick butt. In ~11"x11" squares and double layered, they're nearly impossible to break with one person's weight standing on them.... now if you do something stupid like wear cleats, I'm sure you can accomplish some damage after some strong footwork, lol. I've never seen my duraplex panels break, but I've seen a lot of stomping on them .
Has anyone seen an arcade panel break? _________________

Yup, i have. Back in KC, there's a place called Great Wolf Lodge. It's a hotellish kick buttocks fun place for kids and teens. Has an awesome arcade in the bottom floor. The right side's left arrow was cracked horribly. I never knew it was possible, but it was. But you can just order a quick replacement from an arcade vendor in a zip, which they did.
My choice is always lexan. 350x stronger than glass is the way to go. But since im gonna have to cut up the arrows without the help of my grandpa's toolshed this time... im probaly gonna go with the 3/4 best acrylic at home depot. Forgot the name of it. But it's like 100x stronger than glass (whereas poly carbonated is 50, and acrylic is 20) Shouldn't be too much of a pain to cut 8 sheets hopefully. _________________

I thought lexan was polycarbonate, just a brand name for it. I sure would have liked to use it for my pad, but I couldn't find it around (Hopefully the new Lowe's will have something).
As for seeing panels break, I've seen it three times.
Once was at a local arcade/sport center that doesn't ever take care of their machine. It's been like that for 2 weeks. Didn't actually watch it break, but a friend's friend was the one who did it.
The other two times had happened within the same hour on the same machine from the same guy. I think they were both Namco panels too. Pretty funny though, since he kept playing. |

that is because namco pads blow. And always will.

someone has probably already asked this but i didnt feel like reading through 84 pages of posts. has anyone tried ripping the guts out of a softpad and using that intsead of the controller? it seems like that would be easier, but if it was so simple everyone would just do that so there must be a downside, incompatability or something _________________

You could use the controller board out of a soft pad instead of a normal controller... actually they tend to be more rugged in design and withstand soldering better.
Using the actual sensors from the soft pad wouldn't really work very well with any of the designs that I know of in this topic. _________________

yeah, i disected my softpad earlier (it was crap anyways, generic brand) and realized it would be too tough to try and incorporate the button thingies but i could salvage the little green controller board thing. or i could try my luck at fixing it _________________
