NICE
I think Reign was working on an edit of DR. I've also come close to trying out a song that everyone makes fun of for being handslaptacular (say, D2R or 1998), but revamping the song with actual dance moves. Then again, I'm lazy and prefer beginner steps on stuff like Air, so hey. =p |
Gotta say, love the organized videos... _________________

Does anybody agree with me when I say "Routine is not Freestyle"? Freestyle should be something thats unplanned and done right on the spot. I can't stand it when you can see somebody repeat the same performance more than once. Routines are meant for a dance class or a "real" dance floor. Freestyle is cool and all, but you shouldnt go up and know what you're gonna do at this point of the song. |

A sidenote: While I support routines, I hardly agree that they're meant for a "real dance floor" - that would be improv, too.
But anyway, the thing is that DDR gives you set arrow patterns that are typically hard to break away from, unlike a real dance floor. You have two options to make it more like dancing: Either come up with the coolest possible ways to hit those arrows ahead of time, or do it on the spot. Routine shouldn't be looked down upon if it's trying to accomplish the same goal as improv.
Playing for score is DDR, it's what they intended you to do. Anything else you feel like in terms of performance is what I consider freestyle.
"Freestyle" is a pretty misleading term...should be called something dance-related. Hell, if the GAME wasn't called Dance Dance Revolution, we could call freestyle "dancing", couldn't we? =p _________________

You're thinking of Improv. Lemme start from the top.
DDR gameplay is broken into sub-divisions:
(sorry bout the p00p chart... i made it in like 2 minutes)
You start from regular play, if you choose to, you move on to PA or FS, in PA, you play Light, Standard, or Heavy, Oni or Nonstop; In FS you either Improv: creating the dance while playing, or Routine: choreograph your own dance by studying the step chart and linking together the moves.
At least that's what I get out of it... Imterperate how you will... this is just my take of the DDR universe.
Bottom lin: The main scope of DDR is to have fun playing, stomping, dancing, whatever, with your friends at the arcade or at home. I learned this the hard way while stressing over what song that I can choreograph a routine to... *shrug* just putting my opinions out there...

I guess the conclusion of my freestyle thoughts is that I prefer to see the "Improv" more than a Routine, just because I like to see how people can flow into an unfamiliar song. Oh, Capt, I forgot to say nice job on all of your videos. |

Improv's definitely fun in its own right, building up reflexes and movelists and whatnot...it's also pretty amazing to watch guys like Lil B, 001, or A-Jay, who pull off better improvs than many do routines.
And thanks for the compliment. I really should record new ones someday. _________________

Hey Captain, where did you get the move ideas for the songs you done on your webpage? Reminds me of some 80s Breakin. I noticed your style changed quite a bit through all of them, but I thought you done the best on your second "Kind Lady" with the Happy Days jacket goin on. Just wonderin where you picked up the fancy footwork. By the way, what difficulty where you doin that song to? |

I happened to be reading a freestyle article somewhere here on the net and came across a person that writes down the steps they plan out. In most cases, I never thought about anything else other than to remember a couple steps to throw out there. If anyone writes out their steps and such, do tell me how you do it. I had a thought of maybe drawing feet on 4 arrows, labeling each pattern, but whatever you guys use for planning, please share. |

Aw, I loves mah jacket. Have to find something else to wear to SVGL3, though. And KL is 4 feet on both singles and doubles Light... HAPPY DAYS!
Even though I've watched a ton of excellent videos...I can't really say I've stolen many moves at all, I just take into account what looks best and try to moves as cleanly as they do (i.e. not like I Believe in Miracles). If you have a mirror in your room to dance to, the moves come naturally after you figure out which positions of arms and legs look good and which look awkward...make variations, abuse the good-looking positions.
Between about...Spin the Disc and Kind Lady, I had a good chunk of time to figure things out. You'll probably see that OtJ and LTR look kinda the same - that's the style I've taken out of my room and to the pad.
Footwork just kind of comes to you after watching foot-intensive videos too much, as well as various b-boying videos. I've tried out a few weeks of breaking...made little progress, but the uprocking I was taught (a lot of sharp steps and hops) translates well to DDR. DJ 8-ball and Cynan's old school "shimmies" are awesome as well. Practice shifting your weight, finding your center of balance, sorta hopping instead of sliding (good example: Clark Kent's After the Game...bad example, my Share My Love).
Go on Soulseek (browse users' files in the room called "POPPING" =) to learn how to be better at gliding, popping, and dancing in general. It's all about coordination, muscle memory, balance, and uh, showmanship. _________________

yah, instead of actually learning and respecting the dance (Popping, and funk styles in general), just go to slsk and rip off moves from experienced popper's clips.
real good advice.
*rolleyes*
captaincanada, i can see the funk styles influence in your freestyles, but its very obvious that you're just taking peices of the culture and using them without knowing the key elements of the dance. one example that sticks out in my mind (off the top of my head, i watched your clips when you first posted them and deleted them afterwords due to lack of hard drive space), in one of the videos its very clear that you're doing "The Fresno", which is a poppin exercise to strengthin a hit (the foundation of popping). the only problem was that werent even hitting!!! thats the point of the fresno, TO HIT WITH IT. another was an attempt at a sub-style of Boogaloo called "scarecrow." Loose limbs and neck using shoulders, elbows, and wrists as pivot points to roll your limbs while keeping loose and large movements such as boogaloo rolls in the lower body. do you even know that what you were doing is an imitation of a scarecrow? or did you just see it in a clip and think it was "cool"? just a few of the many examples that i saw, biting little chunks off of our culture for your own personal gain. ive only been popping for a little over a year now, but ive talked to people and know people personally that have put 10, 20 and some even 30 years of their life into these dance styles...only to have kids like you use what they developed to show off for some unknowlegable kids.
tis a sad day indeed. _________________
