I'm considering using Riptide's design to build a pad.

My only concern is the weather stripping...I understand that the weatherstripping depresses when you step on the arrow and acts as a buffer between the screws and the sheet metal contacts. Will this last, or will the weatherstripping compress and cause the pad to lose its sensitivity altogether? I'm afraid my pad won't last because of this.

I don't remember complaints about weatherstripping not lasting, but consider that weatherstripping is pretty cheap, and because you built the pad, you know how to replace it ^^

I'm confused about soldering. It's the ground wire that is confusing me, i dont get how u connect it. (using riptide's design) could some1 draw me like a detailed diagram... im so stupid :\

Would it mess up the pad if i were to spray paint it? (Coat it with 1 layer of primer, 2-3 layers of black spray, and 2 of invisible?

When using a riptide design or any other design with a similar switch, the best weatherstripping (from experience) to use is Manco Super-R weatherstripping: http://www.duckproducts.com/products/detail.asp?catid=3&subid=14&plid=538&PID=227
It hasn't worn down on me yet.

Maybe you're just confused about how the ground works? Each button closes the circuit between a specific electric current and the ground. So all the electricity will eventually go to the ground.
Look at the circuit board's computer chip, then follow a trail until it reaches a button switch. On the trail you followed, you should solder one of the wires for an arrow panel switch. If you look on the other side of the button switch, you'll notice that it has a path that connects to all other button switches. This side and all the copper attached to it is the ground. Solder the other wire to it. You'll notice that all the ground wires from your arrow panel switches are connected by the circuit board in some way, so it doesn't matter where on the circuit board you attach them as long as all the ground wires are touching the ground. You may even wrap all your ground wires together and solder them in one spot if you wish.

As for spraypainting, as long as the spraypaint can hold up against heavy foot traffic, it should be fine.

EDIT: ahck im confused... do you solder the 4 wires to the ground? Or do you just solder them to the ground, then solder the ground wire to the ground??? OMG I CANT BELIEVE I CANT GET THIS UGHHH!!!!

So is that how DDRHomePad's is?

Riptide uses that screw contact system, and no cords are attached to the sheet metal on his acrylic...

Would u just put the regular wire on 8 screws, and then the ground wire on the other 8. and connect it the same way?

I think im starting to get it... lol.

I'm going to bed, i'll be back tomorrow @ 10:45

The ground wire is soldered to the controller's ground copper point (which there should be a link some where to where you can find such points). From that wire you can "split" (use a wire nut and put 4 wires off of 1) and then run the wires to the different arrow panels.

Another way would be to solder 4 wires to 1 ground copper point/4 wires to 4 different ground copper points. Probably soldering and then splitting would be the easiest. I think so, but that's my view on it

ddrhomepad solders his ground wire and "hot" wire to the sheet metal, while Riptide doesn't. He alternates on the screws and then levels them out. I guess it is by preference E4.gif . Oddly, I did half soldering half screw contacts for mine biggrin.gif .

I hope that I answered your question(s). If not, I'll check back again and hopefully have a more thought out answer

yeah i get it now, so like in my pic, that is how its done. One wire goes from the ground, and then you solder 4 other wires together from that ground wire that go onto the bottom sheet metal piece. THanks biggrin.gif

I have finished soldering my pad and I keep having my solders coming off. I have tried many things such as roughing up the sheet metal where I am soldering. I have also tried putting duct tape over the entire wire which results in the arrow not working at all. I have tried hot glueing the wire (not the actual metal) which did not work. I have tried putting duct tape just over the insulated part which results in the solder coming off. I have tried putting the solder in the corner and in the center and it comes off in both cases. I am really running out of ideas and am getting very frustrated.
Please help.

have u tried electrical tape? You can just tape it down, and it'll still work fine.

sounds like the sheetmetal isnt getting hot enough to attract the solder.

Yeah, I have tried electrical tape. It makes the pad not very sensitive.

Maybe you can look into buying a new controller for it... RipTide said that the madcatz controller (no analog) cost more, but the solder for it sticks a lot better than any other controller.

Is that just a soft pad underneith some metal? That is what bootleg DDR machines with PS1's in them do.

I have no problem with the controller solder. What I have a problem with is the solder to the DDR pad.
