well a few days ago i found out the magic of stepmania for the pc lol and as of today i have downloaded exactly 173 songs drool.gif .

today i went to the mall to pick up a PS to USB adapter and i found one. The adapter bran is "PSX to USB Game Adapter" its made by Radioshack. but there's only one problem. i have a Madcatz Beat Pad Pro that works for both Xbox and PS2. when i tried setting up the keys on stepmania, i dont get any response from my pad at all none.

my best guess is that the pad is dual platform so it creates a compatability issue, but thats just my guess...

if anyone had the same problem or knows of a solution i'd be eternally grateful for some help, thanks E4.gif

It's probably too late to say this, but until we know for sure that it'll work, you probably shouldn't get an adapter from Radio Shack...unless you're not using it for DDR I guess...

Generally, it's better to look into what you're buying before you go out and buy one E10.gif

Of course, I'm one to speak on that subject...I could've spent 3 minutes looking up the best adapter for my CFs instead of waiting 2 weeks for my now idle Smart Joy Plus riiight.gif

As far as I know the radio shack USB adapter WILL work but it takes some messing with. You have to use 3rd party key mapping software like Joy2Key. then that lets you map the buttons to keyboard keys like up down left right etc. When my CF comes(if it ever does) Ill be messing with this and will post my results. But Ive tried hooking a psx controller up using this method and it works perfectly so theres no reason it shouldnt work with a pad, the only thing I might have to worry about is lag.

OK: maybe you guys can help me out

I have Stepmania running, and I'm trying to hook up either a RO or CF (doesn't matter...), and everything registers fine except for one problem:
NO U/D and L/R JUMPS!!!

Everything else seems to work fine. Someone recommended a program called JoyToKey (It's freeware), but even when I set the buttons to UDLR through that, I run in to the same problem again frust.gif .
Little help?

Oh, and "The Code" does nothing

Well, first and foremost, what adapter do you have?

You could try NTPad.

it could be an old model, or if you are using an older version of windows/direct x, it might not be recognized. it could also be faulty. I know for a fact that model works though.

well I popped an e-mail off to red octane to see if they have any ideas on why an adapter doesn't seem to work with the dual platform pads.

I was reading your post from the last page and one part was unclear. Did you try using a regular xbox controller on your adapter and not just the pad? also what kind of adapter did you make, one that plugs in the breakaway part or one that plugs into the big bulky xbox plug?

edit: nevermind, you have more then one post going and have different details in both posts. sorry

ok, just a redo for all of those not keeping up with both threads.

Red Octane Ignition Dual Platform pad (apparently all dual platform pads will not work with a simple USB cable made from scratch due to whatever method it uses to figure out which console it's plugged into)
Home made USB adapter made from spare break-away cable end.
The xbox gamepad does work correctly with this adapter using XBCD drivers.
The xbox gamepad shows up as a connected device in USBVIEW.
The DDR pad doesn't show up as a connected device, so it's not a driver issue.
I really need to understand how the dual platform control box decides which platform it's hooked to in order to come up with a solution for this.

I am currently using Windows XP, the latest version of direct X, and the pad is a CF v2.0.

How can I POSSIBLY be out of date!? frust.gif

Any other ideas?

ideas:

1. relax
2. refer to my post where I stated that it could be a faulty adapter. in which case you should return it and get a new one. if that doesn't work, then there is an incompatibility with that adapter model's ability to map the CFs axis to buttons (which is HIGHLY unlikely, I think you're just unlucky). and when I said you were out of date I meant the adapter itself might be an older version which does not have the code.

and just as a recap, I've said before that I don't know about the ability of different adapters to work with metal pads as I don't have the money to go out and buy one. from what I've heard (with regards to CFs), EMS can lag, super dual box apparently has a problem with working the axis code, and smart joy plus doesn't work at all.

at this point you have 3 real options: 1. buy a different metal pad 2. make your own metal pad 3. get a serial port adapter, which works flawlessly with all types of pads (but you can only have one hooked up at a time).

lets try to avoid crying about it. sure, that's an option, but it won't get you anywhere.

Hello,

Thanks for the e-mail.

We have heard problems with the pad using the XBOX-USB adaptor because
Microsoft has not made an drivers for it yet so it is not noticable. You can
use it with the PS2-USB, that definitely works out well.

Sorry we could not help solve your solution.

So... yeah.. they're idiots. I tell them that the drivers are installed but the pad doesn't even show up as a connected device, and they tell me it's because there's not an official Microsoft driver...

I've had a bad day, and every time I tell someone the situation.. making sure to start out by saying I have installed drivers and verified that they work... I get told that I need drivers. It's really getting on my nerves. Is it that hard to actually have the common decency to read a message before you spout off a reply? frust.gif

I'm probably going to be ordering an EMS USB adapter after getting several recommendations from friends and this particular messageboard thread. I do have one question, though:

Someone mentioned earlier that Stepmania's website says that the EMS adapter may not work properly when using two pads at once. Can anyone confirm this, and what color is the adapter (as different revisions are colored differently)? I have two BNS Ultra-DX pads and while I may not use both at once very often, I would like to have that function available.

EDIT: Also, I got two parallel adapters with my BNS pads. I've had some people say that parallel or serial adapters will "fry" their pad, but I haven't had any problems with my parallel adapters. Does anyone have any horror stories with parallel adapters that I should know about? riiight.gif

Heya. A little help?

I'm looking in to getting a PS2 -> PC converter for StepMania, but I dunno which to get. I've been hearing a lot of good about the EMS USB Controller Adapter, but I'm undecided.

How compatible is it? Will it work with regular PS2 controllers (joysticks, too) if I decided to give those a shot at a different game?

How about the SmartJoy Plus?

(If it matters: Windows XP Home w/Service Pack 2, DirectX 9.0, probably going to be using soft pads for a while, then buying Ignition 2.0 pads sooner or later.)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Joe-

<<Edit>>
Where's the best place to order them from? Lik-sang? Level Six?

According to the Cobalt Flux forums, it appears that the EMS USB Controller adapter (in above post) is the best for a pair of Cobalt Fluxes. The SmartJoy Plus didn't work with my CF or Ignition 2.0
