Persoanlly, I think more of a person who uses 1x more than one who doesn't. Simply because we all know that speed mods can make it easier to read the steps. So obviously, respect goes to those who can do the difficult over those who take the easy way out: Speed Mods. But obviously with some songs it's complete understandable to use mods: such as Bag. And there are some songs which would make a player more impressible with speed mods: Max 300 1.5x etc. O_O

But in the end, it's not eough of a difference to really matter. I've got my opinion, and others have theirs, but whatever you feel more comfortable with. Just don't rely on them to pass a song haha

As for bar rapers.. that's another story E15.gif

I don't see why everyone is amazed by someone who does a fast 10 on 1.5x. the reason we do it is for the spread out patterns. no one wants to see step patterns that fast all scrunched up. only song I can't do 1.5x on is sakura because there are no complex patterns in the fast parts, so it makes tracing the arrows really hard.

indeed. there are plenty of players, including myself, who have been playing the game for years before speed mods were even a concept. we learn to adapt and read them at their normal scrolling speed, and at least for myself, i choose to continue to play that way.

I hate it when people flame me or call me a "cheater" for using speed Mods or the bar.

My grandad had to walk 5 meters to school everyday when he was in high school but no ones complaining now about schoolbusses.

But nonetheless... you should be highly applauded for your skills in learning such a slow song with no mercy of speed changers whatsoever.

What I don't get is why don't people just learn the timing of the arrows first as opposed to where they are?
The game is based on timing synchronized with the music.
Before speed mods that was pretty much the best way to figure out at the very least those "compact" songs (such as Orion).
All I had to do with Orion was remember for the most part, 1,2, 123, 1,2, 123, 1, 123, etc. etc. And then you can always take the home version and practice it with assist to listen to the claps and if you have to stare at the arrows, slow it down to the point you can see the cluster and figure out which arrow to hit when.
Even in the arcade, if we couldn't read the arrows we listened to someone that can when he/she played.

Well, like I said, I don't find it totally disrespectful but I feel it is more of a learning aide (just like that training mode w/ assist) until one figures out the timing of the arrows so that he/she can play it on normal speed.

However, when people can't play any song w/out the speed mod, that's kinda sad. 'Specially if I throw on something like Synchronized Love Expert Shuffle Flat and they fail almost instantly it just shows that they are "read spoiled" and aren't actually listening to the song.

Now, as for playing it on Silent Attack....laugh.gif

Speed mods are not evil. They just help you on slower songs or faster songs if you don't like scrunched up arrows.

Anyway, back to the subject............

Like dj 8-ball said, they are just a learning aid. Even though I admitedly (sp?) use speed mods, I can pass songs without them. You just have to remember the timing of the arrows.

I don't find anything disrespectful about speed mods but it is true they make things easier. I learnt Heavy on 1.5x myself, at the time 1x gave my head a bit of an information overload but after awhile I dropped down to 1x. I'm still not the greatest 1x player in the world and of course i get better scores with 1.5x most of the time but i have AA'd a lot of songs on 1x and passed Orion and bag 1x.

Double is a different matter for me. I started using 1.5x when i got to Heavy also, but even 1.5x at first was a real strain to read. Even now I still play 1.5x Heavy frown.gif I have tried 1x and i can pass a lot of songs (even got a better score than my last 1.5x score for Do You Remember Me). But i still managed to fail/almost fail a lot of easy songs... even songs i had AA'd 1.5x. Timing to the music is obviously not the problem as i can do 1x single fine....but being able to take in so many arrows across the screen at once is very hard for me.. i make stupid reading mistakes. Most of the problem is around the 'centre' pad but anything that streams across the screen is quite taxing.

Now i respect being able to play 1x because it is harder (in general)....but i also love to play double for enjoyment. I play DDR for enjoyment! And even tho i want to, trying to learn double 1x gives me a headache disturb.gif So I say just play it your way, whatever speed mods you use it's your choice happy.gif An AAA is still an AAA, an AA is still an AA, a pass is still a pass. Mods only matter based on your own feelings towards them, eg i feel like a cheat if i AA a Single song with speed mods that i haven't yet AA'd without. But it's only because i'm cheating myself, i have my own level set for me and if someone else AAs a song with aiding mods i'm not going to look down on them for it even if i believe the 1x AA is harder.

Frankly, I think it's stupid that people are so subconscience about earning respect for using/not using speed mods. Maybe if you focused more on having fun, you would not care about earning respect or not. I can understand if someone were to play Bag on like 3x, then yea. But then again, so what? Just play the stupid arrow stomping game to have fun, not to gain respect.

If speed mods are the difference between passing and failing a song, then there is nothing wrong with using them. Besides, once you put your money in the machine, it's your game and you can play it however you want. If someone was paying for my games and they wanted me to do songs on 1x, shuffle, dark, reverse, I'll do it no questions asked.

Oh, and there was this tournament in my area where using 1.5x was optional(But nothing further than that) and all the players on 1x were weeded out quick.

I dont really think it matters. I use mod's all the time. I dont think it demeans (sp) your skills at all. If it helps you pass the song it doesnt matter in my book.

The arrows are the same rhythm, no matter how you turn them around. You can twist them up, down, speed it up really fast, make them do all sorts of tricks, and they'll still be the same rhythm.

So.. it doesn't matter at all, like most of the people are saying.
"As long as you can get the same result, it doesn't matter how you get there."

I started out at 1x and when speed mods came about they helped me develop my PA much better. Although 1x helps gain better rhythm perspective. I dont think speed mods are a bad thing rather a nice new option for timing and balance because before I never really worried about my balance until 3x made me twist and turn.

Speed mods (and solo arrows which usually accompy them) represent the death of DDR. As many addicted DDR players continued to improve themselves, it eventually turned out very few players really had what it took to continue to play beyond their obsessive compulsive play level. Since DDR Solo was a failure E2.gif Konami delayed the death of DDR by making it easier through speed mods and solo arrows. Of course the inevitable came when players didn't develop the depth of mind to continue to challenge themselves.

I don't look down on those who use speed mods at all... when they are playing PIU! Face it when it comes to DDR I do look down upon those who use speed mods. However I don't hold it against them being avaliable in Stepmania. Stepmania is about freedom so many options should be avaliable to the player. You are also free to use them in the arcade if you want, but it is a clear demostration of the patience and discipline you posses.

I play on 1x because it's easier. I do better on stuff like Secret Rendez-vous or Justify My Love on 1x than on higher speeds. Does that make me better than someone who plays on 1.5x or 2x all the time, just because I'm playing without speedmods, even though I'm, in your words, "taking the easy way out"?

I just do better with more time to read. That makes 1x the easier way for me. In that way, I respect people who play on higher speeds, because they're just doing what makes things easiest and most comfortable for them.

Same goes for using the bar, really. I don't use the bar, but that's because I'm, again, taking the easy way out. When I hold the bar, I get tired faster and miss more steps, so I don't hold the bar. When anyone else holds the bar and does better, I respect that, because they're doing what makes themselves the most comfortable.

If it is earning respect you're worried about IMO it looks better to pass a song with mods than fail it without them. At least w/ mods it looks like you know what you are doing. E13.gif Seriously though, I do like using speed mods. I use them on songs like Secret Rendez-vous and Long Train Running to make them easier to read, but I use 1.5x on End of the Century to challenge myself a bit more. I guess what it comes down to is whatever helps you play better, be it mods or bar raping, hey, go for it. E4.gif
