Starting September 1st, we will be featuring one moderator/administrator per month as the Mod of the Month.

Edit: Cutriss was selected as September's Mod of the Month! We've interviewed him so everyone can learn a little more about him.

I know I'll get punished for this, but I can't really resist asking.

With all due respect, do we really need to find new ways to perform virtual fellatio on the moderators? I think a "User of the Month" feature is a far better idea, since the general user base is where most of the actual DDR news comes from, not to mention some of the most informational and insightful posts. There are quite enough users here that treat moderators like gods. Plus, there are already moderators like VxJasonxV that do enough self-sucking on their own. I guess this idea doesn't make much sense to me.

By the number of comments to the original post thus far, I'd say my view is shared with a few others.

Considering that all of the discussion in this has been in the Site Feedback thread, there is no discussion here.

We have had SSR members in the past - people who were excellent examples to the community, good posters who were of mass benefit to the boards. These people were then harrassed because of gaining special status, claiming that they were moderator butt kissers and the like. We were forced to end it because of the rude people.

The ultimate goal in doing the Mod for the Month award is for the people to give their opinion as to who they believe are doing the best job. It's an award given BY the people to reward a moderator's excellence and to give credit to those who may otherwise be unappreciated.

I'm not sure where you're seeing these people treating moderators like gods, considering how many rude PMs end up in our inboxes on a daily basis because of locking threads and giving out warning points. Unless you've been in a moderator's shoes, you really have no clue as to what they go through on a day-to-day basis or the amount of time and effort that goes into keeping the site up and running.

I'm sorry that you don't share in that opinion, but the 200+ people who have already voted obviously do.

I know a lot of people like you on these forums. Unfortunately I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that a your name has the magic word, "girl" and thus grants you immediate attention from most of the little boys. You have been very helpful to me in the past so let me say I'm very appreciative.
I don't think this will give you what you are looking for. I believe that a lot of the mods on these forums are unpopular for doing exactly what they are supposed to do, keep the peace. I don't think a lot of the mods who deserve recognition are't going to be winning any popularity contests.

I have been in a moderator's shoes actually, I'm the main moderator at freq.com, and I know that the site only gets a very small fraction of the traffic that this site does, but I've had my fair share of rude messages and flames.

It always ends up the same way, a user posts a ton, becomes a moderator for status purposes, and then complains when people message them. A moderator (or 30) should be around to help the people, not to act as a "say-all, end-all" enforcer that hands out these goofy "warning points" as a virtual smack.

There are ads on every page, and if you say the word "Konami" in a post, another ad is generated. If you're going to advertise your site, you should be able to handle the user base. If they can't handle it, well, then let's give them an award each month...

And this is why we don't make people moderators for posting a lot, nor for the asking. It's not for "status", despite what you think. Maybe it works differently on your board.

A moderator "moderates". Keeps the discussion to a moderate level. Helps keep it from getting out of hand.

We also help the users, both old and new.

But you can only help someone who is willing to help themselves. We don't go all crazy on someone who doesn't go straight to the songlists page and instead asks a question in his first post. We assess the situation and handle it as appropriate.

If someone has been here for a month and they still haven't gotten a grasp of how things work here, that's a learning deficiency, and not our fault. When you register here, you're supposed to read the FAQ (it's in the registration process). If you skipped over that, don't blame us for getting irate.

What does that have to do with anything?

Look, it's obvious you have an axe to grind here, so what's *really* eating you, huh?

Warning points help people. If you get points, you know you shouldn't do it again, or else you'll get more. We used to have a system of private warnings, public warnings, one week ban, perm ban, etc., and even before that, we used to be very informal and let people know they shouldn't be doing stuff. Of course, there are always the people who never listen, no matter how nice you are, so we have to ban some people.

When the site becomes bigger, you have to resort to more automated ways of letting people know what behavior is expected, and banning those who never learn. Warning points serves that purpose. If you can think of a better, scalable, and automated system of moderating that is also effective, please let me know.

We don't advertise our site...we advertise other sites. I don't see the relationship between advertising and handling a user base. Can you explain?

Regarding the award each month, thing, we used to have that. It was called SSR membership. Good, upstanding members would become "SSR Members." Unfortunately, there were tons of problems with that, because instead of creating more good users, we would create 1) people who complained about SSR members being buttocks-kissers, and 2) people who would kiss buttocks in order to become an SSR member, which wouldn't work anyway.

Actually, I don't get attention from the little boys at all. I can understand where your thoughts might come from, but I have never been treated like 'OMGZ FEMALE PERSON'. I'm just IG around these parts.

If you read my first post in the Site Feedback thread, you'll note that once a person has been picked, they are ineligible for 6 months. This is to avoid merely a popular vote.

Yes. I know I need it. My virtual sex drive is too high to be denied. drool.gif

I think the other mods covered it pretty well.

We have over 40,000 registered users but only 200 or so have actually voted in the MotM Poll. Even factoring in the banned ones, if we really wanted our egos massaged, then we'd surely expect more than 'just' 200 people vote.

We don't need to have any type of special recognition but it's really less about the "winner" and more about what mod the users want to know more about. We mods, are not here for any glory. I couldn't care less about being the popular mod or whatever. We are all donating our free time to mod this site. We don't get anything in return for being mods. Not only that, those SSR members spoken above...all of them but one morphed into mods anyway.

It's funny because in order to be a mod, you have to be the type of user who doesn't necessarily want to be a mod. Then, when you are a mod, you have to REALLY want to be here and make this site a better place, to have to put up with some of things we have to put up with and still stay here. Mind you, this is our free time we are spending here. We've had a few mods leave over stuff like that.

Some of us mods are more in the background and don't post as much as others. Some mods only go to certain sections. Some only post in certain threads. Some only come out to feed on baby doves. So surely they are less likely to be chosen over the 'more popular' more visible mods. Do you really think they would cry if the were not MotM?

I know I will. frown.gif

Please, try not to look so deeply into this little "contest." As far as I know, us mods really aren't getting anything out of this other than a little recognition.

And for the record, VxJasonxV does no such 'sucking' so you can kindly leave him out of the conversation.

I dunno about you other green/blue foots, I kinda wanted to be a moderator because I enjoy helping out the site, I enjoy the social aspect I get out of being one, and I don't really look at it as some sort of a special 'status' for me to go around bragging about?

When I became a moderator, nothing really changed with me. I kept the same friends, acted the same way around a DDR machine, everything was just like before. I don't ask for any special 'treatment' from people, nor do people give me any. There's no real massaging going on here, just a hand-picked crew of people working with a userbase of over 40,000. Let us be, will ya?

Haha, much has changed since I last posted in this forum (but ddrfreak.com is still my homepage though).

I think mod of the month would be a pretty good idea. Mods do a lot of things in the forums and use up a lot of their time looking about the forums and keeping at a moderate level. So why not just give them a break for once and let the poll be a fun thing?

Don't look into this MotM thing too seriously, it's just a poll. E15.gif

sherl0k won, folks. It was purely a conspiracy. It makes perfect sense, just imagine sherl0k losing. You can't, right? It must be a conspiracy. sherl0k is the best, and the best win.

I do have one thing to say however, moderators need to cut back on their ill-timed sarcasm. If someone doesn't have the mental capacity to post in the proper place, that doesn't give the moderator the right to post smart-buttocks messages and make them feel bad. blink.gif

My two cents. Yes.

i'm a mod for other forums, and your two cents has a point (dont be cruel), but ppl really do need to be told how forums work now and again....plus i dunno about the mods here but insomnia and comp work go hand in hand with me, and when you're that tired and working to improve things you can get kinda cranky(especially at newbies who continue NOT to get it). i guess i see two points in this thread (unintended ones at that) mods: dont be power nazis and ppl: be nice about this contest these ppl do work so the forums dont go to caca!
