Your first problem seemingly sounds like a bad synch job for the particular song. If not, then I have no idea.

Your second problem...meh, I have no idea either. Just reinstall SM and you're fine.

if it is lagging on every song I can only think of two fixes for this...

1. your computer is too slow (unlikely...I've gotten SM to run full speed at low resolution on a PII 266mhz with 256megs of ram and a 16meg ATI rage card). upgrade your computer.

2. there is some problem with the gap setting in your version of SM. fiddle with the stepmania .ini file (you'll want to edit the global gap) until it works properly.

instead of trying to fix the problem, you could also just bypass it by using DWI. it has lower system requirements and you can adjust the gap in the options menu without editing the .ini file manually.

Thank you for doing this for me.

For the first problem, if every song is off sync, but the rest of the program runs smoothly, then you probably need to alter the global gap. Like Sync siad, you should try messing with it in the .ini file. If your game is actually lagging, then you probably don't have enough memory to runt the game.

The second issue is because you switched to Free Play mode. Hit the Scroll Lock key at the main menu to enter the operator menu, go under Coin Options, and change the coin mode to Home.

Or just keep hitting F3 till it goes back to Home mode.

The suggestion has been made a couple of times to edit the global gap. However, this is a hack. It is suggested that you post a bug report to the Stepmania bug tracker at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=37892&atid=421366. Please stop recommending that people change the global gap. There is a reason you can't edit it from the options menus, and that is because if there is a lag problem on a system, it is something that should be fixed and not worked around.

um, ooooook. well if the fix works, why not report the error to SM and fix it yourself so everyone wins. that way, SM understands that their program lags on a person's computer, and that person has a fix for the problem.

saying not to edit the gap is like telling someone they shouldn't edit the metrics of an old theme so it works in the newer versions of SM. they just want their program to work, and it IS open source, so there isn't any sort of legal issue involved with editing the global gap. people also edit it for timing problems that they have while using pads and adapters. it's the only way to do it.

and you'll notice, I also suggested getting DWI, which DOES have the global gap feature in its options menu.

Not to mention that the issue of the program lagging is likely not a bug in the program, because it works for other people (I have NEVER had a problem with the global gap). It's probably an issue with the system or the configuration, and there is no way the Stepmania folks can tailor their program to everybody's system. The fact that there IS a fix means that he might as well use it, and if he wants to send a bug report to Stepmania he can do that too.

What's so bad about a work-around solution when we're talking about an alpha version of a program?

The problem is that people often simply change the global gap and ignore it. If the problem can be fixed on the program level, it should be. This has been covered many times before. Feel free to change the global gap, but if you're going to do so, please file a bug report as well. Don't tell people to just change it and forget about it. It is always preferable to at least determine if the problem can be fixed on a software level rather than at the user level.
