I say no.

And, I don't know whether there's a Summer Olympic event that uses an electrical machine as part of the contest. Someone help me here.

Plus, Spike had it right, events that have stood the test of time like table tennis have been in the Summer Olympics. On a side note, golf was an Olympic event almost 100 years ago, and I believe there's a push to get it back into the Games either for '08 or '12, which would be really cool if it happens.

There are major video game events (some worldly, some just in the U.S.) where DDR can fit in, like Major League Gaming, The V Games, the Cyberathlete Professional League, or the World Cyber Games.

But even then, I doubt those organizations would want to add it to their roster because arcade DDR is fading with the lack of a new arcade mix (Come on, you're not going to use the home version where the perfect window is larger).

Yes, video games as an olympic event does sound cool, but let's be realistic - isn't going to happen.

Just continue to support your local tournaments.

Discussing how cool something would be and how practical it is have to go hand in hand. There isn't a lot of discussion involved if you just sit there and say "DDR IN TEH OLYMPICS WULD BE FUN!!!11!eleven!" Besides, I think the main point of the thread was to determine the practicality and likelyhood of such a thing ever happening.

Unless things have changed, fencing uses electronics to detect and count hits. There was a scandal a few Olympiads ago when one of the Russians was discovered to have rigged his foil such that it would register a hit whenever he wanted it to.

Oh, so that's how they're able to call the hits so quickly. E1.gif

I had to do some work on my lawn and flower gardens the other day. It was brutal; I was sweating a bunch pushing that lawn mower, trimming the flowers, picking up the grass and putting it in several recycling bins, and not to mention edging the lawn. Doing yard work, I sweated a lot more than I did playing basketball a few days earlier and because of that sweat, I think it should be a sport. E13.gif

there isn't a sport in the olympics that relies on a machine though. I mean you can count the hits in fencing the machine just makes it easier, but in DDR you need the machine for there to be a game. Despite this though I think it should be a sport (if not in the olympics at least a sport). Honestly how many people out there can AAA maxx unlimited? I think there are what 2 people out there or something like that. That's what the olympics is the best of the best just because you can AAA a song doesn't mean you would go. Plus they could make a new mix with really hard songs. There could also be free style events. I think being really really good at DDR takes a lot of skill, and could be a respectable sport at the olympics and should be considered. I don't think it will ever become a sport though because
1. It takes a poopy load of time to become a sport in the olympics and DDR hasn't been around for that long.
2. It is a video game and uses electronics
3. I don't think people would really ever respect DDR unless they played it (like the people who decide what becomes a sport in the olympics)

I think there should be an international tournament for DDR though.

How many times do we have to go over this? DDR is NOT a sport and it never will be. Yes it would be cool to play in front of millions of people but like what Spike said DDR will not stand the test of time. At least I don't think so.

I'm not seriously arguing that DDR belongs in the Olympics, but I can argue against this point. The object of DDR is to stomp your feet in time with the song... theoretically, you could have a panel of judges giving a subjective determination of how accurate the player was, but instead we have the machine giving a precise determination of how accurate the player was. Same as in fencing... instead of judges trying to figure out what was a hit and what wasn't a hit, you have machines doing it for them. It's really a valid analogy.

That said, no, DDR doesn't belong in the Olympics, and there's no chance it'll ever happen.

It won't be in the Olympics.

Would it be cool to see it on there? Sure. I would watch it.

It's not a sport though. It's a video game.

Just my opinion.

I think DDR is a sport. I must admit though they would never make it an olypic event becuase its just a video game, anything that you can unplug should not be in the olympics. I love ddr and i would love to see some americans woop on the Japs, but that would never happen and everyone knows it. I would love to see some ddr tournaments televised. It would be great to get all the best players from all over the world and have them compete for some serious cash. It would be insane. I would definately pay to watch it, or at least skip school to watch it on tv. Well im out peace.

hehe, really?

I actually said it like that for effect, didn't really care enough to give a reason...sports require physical activity and I don't consider hitting a ball and riding their little carts around the course physical activity...in order for me to aknowledge it as a sport, they'ed have to run from hole to hole or sumthin...

Well i dont think golf should be considered a sport, but i know im way to lazy to walk 18 fricken holes in the 110 degree weather. but anyway this isnt about golf its about ddr, so under the dictionary definition that you put up, DDR is a sport. it doesnt matter if its a machine or a video game. In the dictionary it does not say "A sport cannot be a video game." So therefore DDR is a sport. enough said. biggrin.gif

For some reason though, I just don't consider DDR a sport. Yes, it is physical activity, and by strict dictionary definition one could argue that it is indeed a sport. But I think the problem is the matter of scoring if DDR was a sporting event. How would you do it? With the game's scoring engine, or would you have a panel of judges that would award a score afterward? The latter just seems like a silly option to me, so then you can go to the former. However, that, I think, presents you with a celing that can't be passed. Once you can AAA everything (which, granted, is something few, if any, people can do), you can't push your performance any higher. In sports like track, basketball, gymnastics, whatever, there's always something to pursue, a higher score, a faster time, a better routine, etc.

Someone suggested the idea of a new mix with harder songs for competition purposes. That could work, but to me, it's making things unnecessarily complicated.

Besides that, competitors in the Olympics spend most of their lives trying to reach that level of progress. How long does it take for someone to get good at DDR? A few years, if even that? IF DDR became an Olympic sport and someone just started playing today, I think they could be good enough for the Olympics by the time the Summer 2008 Olympics rolled around. For those reasons, DDR has no place in the Olympics and isn't really a sport to me. It's just a video game with an alternate form of input, and I don't think video games are sport. Not trying to state this as fact, just my opinion. I suppose there's always the idea of basing the competition on routines and freestyle, which would thus solve the problem of the PA ceiling, but then that just seems to add a whole new level of, again, unnecessary complication to it.

I beg to differ. You can have Konami make songs where the competitors can only listen to the music first (to account for speed changes) and maybe have random mods thrown in there or songs harder than PSMO. The idea of DDR as a sport is only improbably, not totally impossible. When people AAA everything, we give them harder stuff. We throw in new mods. We give them challenges. It's just like weightlifting, when someone sets the bar you raise it higher. It can't be that hard for Konami to obtain 5 licenses every four years just for Olympic use (the advertisement for being in the Olympics would pay for any costs they might encounter).

Yeah JSB would get owned blink.gif

DDR as a sport? I've seen people play it like a sport and you could make the argument. As an olympic sport? No.

Freerunning is more of a sport then DDR, and that will never go in the olympics either. Needs to not just be a sport, but a special kind of sport.
