New to these forums and I'm newly addicted to DDR, but my left arrow has stopped working on my madcatz soft pad. It's all wrinkly there and it won't seem to straighten. Based on what I'm reading at the top of this post it may be too late for my pad. I'd like to mod it, but I'm uneasy about opening it. Anyone know of any easy way to fix it? |

Here is a guide about repairing a broken pad. You'll see the same setup in a cheap soft pad as with an ignition pad, so it should be very useful. You have to open your pad in order to fix it.
If the pad is still under warranty, try to get it replaced. For these pads, I'd advise you to apply the plywood mod |

If you hardwood your MadCatz as soon as you get it, it'll last just fine. I just got one today (And they have some cool new blue design, I love it) and stuck it on the same board my old one was on. If you staple down around the corners, expect to get TONS of phantom steps. ;/
Hardwood modding saved my old pad from throwing it out to it lasting almost a month longer. It still works, but the up arrow grinds on my nerves.
[Edit]
Here's a picture of the new MadCatz Beat Pads. Internally they're exactly the same, but the textured cover has a new design. :o

I got a Mad Catz pad (replacement of old origional pad- dead after 7 months of endless use) the kind that has an adapter for both the PS2 and XBox.
I noticed a strange anomaly. When I start the game up with the pad plugged in, I need to unplug and plug back in the adpater between the PS2 plug and the pad plug for it to work. Very strange.
I stapled it down to a wooden board, and it works pretty well. |

Alright, I have a softpad question.
I bought a BNS Ultra DX-Xtreme Dance Pad found here http://www.buynshop.com/productinfo/44/VG-DDR-ULTDX/
And used it for a month. It worked fine. I then took it to out of town and came back. When i returned, i had lost my game, so I could not play. I left it stand up vertical for about 3 months. Today, I had borrowed a game and tried to play, but the up arrow rarely registers, and the right arrow responds where the "O" should be. Any ideas on how to fix it? |

Update on Mad Catz:
I covered the entire pad in duct tape, nice black duct tape. I started playing in my shoes, despite the pad's warning, and works pretty well.
People say to use pad covers if you want to play in your shoes, but does anyone think that using duct tape as a cover would work? It works well so far.
I might add a second layer, does anyone think that if I'm playing with shoes I should add a second layer of tape on the pad? |

I'm gonna need to recover my pad, so while I've got it uncovered, what's a good way to make it so I can feel the arrows, so I know where I'm at? |

Lately I've been dancing on my pad, which I haven't cut open to fix yet, using a separate controller to register the arrows. Rediculous, indeed, but some people may find the hand and feet movement challenging on higher-difficulty songs. Has anyone ever tried this? |

I just got a BNS DX Xtreme II pad 3 weeks ago and already the inserts under the arrows are shifting all over the place. I can fix them with a lot of fiddling (you have to pull up the top layer to separate the inserts from the glue) but it's still very difficult and involves a lot of scrunching of the inner layers. This seems to be a common problem with these pads. Anyone modded theirs to solve this problem? I thought about sewing it up... |

Do those pads really unzip like shown in the picture? Does the foam come out? Could you possibly replace that foam with a cut-to-size piece of plywood? |
They unzip. The foam does come out, but I don't know if a cut-to-size piece of plywood would work. The foam is great. When you play you can feel the difference in the buttons. I'll come back with pictures. |

Question: Has anyone tried those Gamestop brand pads? I need a new one for doubles because my Mad Katz one just completely stopped functioning (after a good year and a half of play believe it or not).
Would it be a good substitute or should I just go with another Mad Katz? (It can be cheap, I only play doubles occasionaly). My other pad is a Naki "DPR" pad, which is still functioning really well.

I bought a BNS DX Pad 2 days ago and it's already screwed up. When I'm just standing in the middle it lights up and thinks i'm pressing a button. While i'm selecting a song it will randomly quite because it thinks i'm holding a button when i'm just standing in the middle. Anyway I can fix this? |

the gamestop pad seems to me just like every other cheap $20 pad in the world...but I can't really comment on it cause:
A) Only had it a week and a half
and
B) It's modded, my last wasn't
They smell good out of the box if that counts for anything |

Hm, thanks Arfer. I may go for that one and just mod it with my other Naki pad. I thought it would be different than the Mad Katz one.
And BTW, the "new pad smell" probably parallels the "new car smell," but for a few exceptions ^^.
