Alright, when I go to the arcade, I usually play most songs on standard because I'm used to the ignition pads. I got nothing but B's. It takes me a little bit to get used to the platform and then I move up to heavy, but still get B's even after playing for an hour. And then yesterday, I go to my friend's house and we played MAX because he just got it (we had been playing MAX2). I started on heavy, and every song I played, I A'd or better. How in the world does that work? I didn't have to warm up or anything. It was like 20 mintues and I was A'ing every song. (and one B on Paranoia Evolution) _________________

The home versions don't judge your timing quite as strictly as the arcade versions. Something that's difficult to PA at the arcade could be easy as pants to AA on the home versions. _________________

The perfect window (the timeframe in which you must step to score a perfect) is much larger on a console version. It takes more precision to get the same score at an arcade machine. _________________

Don't forget also that home timings tend to be a bit *earlier* than arcading timings too. Most mixes I need to use about +1.5 timing for the center of the perfect window to be a decent match for the arcade. If you're getting a lot of greats at the arcade, you're probably rushing. |

Don't forget that it's also possible that he had the difficulty setting changed on his home version. _________________

That doesn't change the timing windows. It only controls how fast the bar drains. |

Yeah, you can't change the timing window on the home versions...you'd have to get Stepmania to do that. _________________

Oh this question is easily answered.
I used to work at an arcade, and had to replace the dance pads once. Its because the electrical relay time on the pads is slower on the Machine than it is at home. At home, it takes less power to make a DDR pad work, so less energy is needed. But on the machine, the system needs to send the pressure info to the main board(Thats why you have to step on arrows rather than press buttons to play). It takes more power to get the machine to work, so more energy is wasted that way. And sometimes the step sensors are more sensitive than others. _________________

I'm pretty sure you step on arrows because the game was designed that way, not because pressure info needs to be sent to the "main board"
Furthermore, as Syncognition said (although on a slightly different subject), "You can't blame crappy PA on the speed of light."
Oh, and so you know, electricity travels at the speed of light _________________

haha! here it is...from the thread in simulators when someone was asking about if there would be a lag between seeing the arrows using a projector with stepmania and the actual processing of steps.
I wrote: | regarding the speed of light:
light travels at 3 E 8 meters per SECOND.
that's 300,000,000 meters in a single second. so unless you have the projector set up in orbit (or some other way that's really far away), you won't have a noticable lag. that's like saying that there is a noticable lag between the arrow showing up on screen and you seeing it. speed of sound is more of a problem, but again, unless you have the speakers set up many many yards away from you (like say 50), this won't be a problem either.
EDIT: and just so you know, the timing for a marvelous in the arcade is something like .015 seconds. doing some simple math, we can see that the max distance before this timing window becomes distorted would be roughly 4,500,000 meters. in other words, you can't blame crappy PA on the speed of light. |
so the simple answer is, the timing window at home is easier. what people are discovering as they go from home to arcade is referred to as "pad shock." you aren't used to the pad and the timing window. that's all. you'll suck for awhile, but it'll get better as you play more.
EDIT: and the way an arcade sensor works IS by pressure, but it doesn't send some info on the amount of pressure used or whatever, it's like a normal button. step down, electrical circuit is completed, signal is sent. It does take more pressure to set off a pad in the arcade, but other than that, the signals are sent at exactly the same speed in the arcade as in the home versions (well...close enough...nothing is exact). so no dice on the pressure sensitivity theory...it's just a matter of pad shock and timing windows. |

The perfect window at home is 35 m/s whereas in the arcade its only 30 m/s _________________

Ok but that doesn't explain why I get a D on Max 300 on the console system, but get an A at the arcade. _________________
