Well, the ad is a whole lot larger, and since you already know there's an ad there, you are much more disinclined to look at that space. I can definitely see his point and agree with it. I just have no idea where else it'd go.

Why don't we put it in aZn, or 1337, or ALL CAPS or something so people will know we're speaking directly to them?

It makes it easier to navigate around the site. If you had to go back to the main page every time that would be annoying.
And if you don't use it, does it really matter if they're there or not?
