I bought an Ignition pad from Redoctane too and it also stopped working about two weeks after I got it. For the price I paid for this pad I couldv'e bought tons more DDR games. Never again will I shop with Redoctane. The companys prolly on one huge vacation from all the money they have ripped people off from. That's y their customer service sucks @$$!!!!!! |
Thats unfortunate that you had a bad experience with RO, but that doesn't mean all preceeding customers will encounter the same thing. They do need to do something about their overpriced ignition pad though. I still think their metal pads are quite good based on people's reviews.
Have you even opened the pads up to see what possibly could go wrong? I would ask RO about a solution to your problem before you try to return it when you get a hold of them

I bought my RO metal pads a few weeks ago and I say they're horrible. It has been three weeks since sent them a series of Emails and voicemails and I still haven't got any response. Read my original post on page 80 or 81.
I decided not to try to return the pads and void the "warranty" by modding them. I am happy with the results of my mod and I will soon post the procedure on my web page.
The "warranty" isn't very useful when you can't even contact the company get them to fix it. |

I was wondering if anyone could supply me a working link to how to mod a cyphergames metal pad. I think it was PS2 freaks mod where he buys high impact arrows and uses foil tape and insulation tape. The one on the forums doesn't work. thanks |

DDRNemesis wrote: | Does anyone get Redoctane's return policy? It says that they will gladly accept any item returned for a refund less shipping & handling. Well then at the bottom it says you have to pay a 15% restocking fee for everything returned. That means I would have to pay 70 $ just to return my pad. Is this even right? Heres the returning page. http://www.redoctane.com/returns.html |
That means that you'd have to pay the shipping back to Red Octane yourself and that you'd have to pay a 15% restocking fee. Since the Red Octane metal pad, I believe is $200 - You'd have to pay $30. Therefore, in your refund for returning the item instead of getting the original $200, you'd only get $170. Get it now? _________________

thehuntsmen - is that the same link you access for replacement arrows below? Thats the only one I know of and it seems to be down right now. It used to work I think a month ago... There is second guide thats clarifies ps2freaks guide.

Additional information about cyphergames mod by ps2freak:

Well, plexiglass is a kind of acrylic (a brandname, like Jell-o, or Kleenex), so it's really both. Ask for either, and you'll get the right stuff. To cut it, my friend's dad is a carpenter, and used his router, I believe, with a jig piece (I don't know if that's the technical name, check the My Home Built DDR Pad thread for more info on that.
The foam on my pads isn't connected, in any way, to the foam. Instead, the graphic is put on the sticky side of the foam graphic-side up, and then I use the same adhesive spray DDRhomepad uses on his pads.
The wires running to the graphic are for the lights. You can rip it out, or you can save it if you can't live without lights.
Hope this helps,

Here's a version of his mod for a CG v2.0:
Syxx wrote: | Here is the simplified and hopefully easy to understand instructions for making ps2freak's mod on a v2 pad.
Step 1 : Go to Home Depot. Purchase ONE roll of 30 foot by 2 inch by 1/8th inch insulation tape and one roll of foil tape. Both of these are in the plumbing section. The foil tape should be by the duct tape. Go to the glass and acrylic section. There will be all different sizes of acrylic and glass. I bought TWO the 12 inch by 24 inch by .093 inch sheets of the .high impact acrylic. All of this costs about 20 dollars.
Step 2 : Go Home. Unscrew and take the four arrow pannels out. Don't play with the sensors underneath. Don't play with the wires. I know it looks tempting BUT DON'T TOUCH THEM unless you know what you're doing. Take the outer wrapping off of the acrylic. Put the pannel on top of one side of the acrylic and draw around it using a magic marker. Repeat for the other side. Then repeat for the other piece. Now, using a saw cut out the design that you just traced. Try putting the arrows you just cut out into your pad to make sure that they fit.
Step 3 : Print out your arrow design. You can find these in the other metal pad discussion : http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=59254 Attach the picture onto the bottom of each arrow. I didn't do this step yet because I'm lazy
Step 4 : Cut out strips of the insulation that are long enough to fit underneath the arrows.
Step 5 : Put 2 strips of the foil tape about 6 inches long along the bottom of the panel over the insulation tape so that it will touch the contact on the metal pad.
Step 6 : Put 4 pannels back in. Don't screw them in. Test it in a song on light or standard that you KNOW you can do really well in PA. If you are getting a lot of perfects, congratuations... You can screw the arrows in and you're done. If you are getting shadow steps or what not, try moving the foil tape so it is not making constant contact with the sensor. I had to do this with my left arrow, because the sensor was not centered.
Step 7 : Play DDR for like 12 hours in a row because PLAYING ON ONE OF THESE IS AWESOME.
Enjoy.
Let me know if you have any questions. |
Removing rubber feet and mounting a CG pad:
ps2freak wrote: | Yes, I removed the stoppers, they morph the metal.
Mounting to Plywood: To mount your pads, what I did is get some 3/4 inch pressboard (plywood will work as well), that is long and wide enough for both pads to fit on. I then put a piece of pine (any other wood would do here as well) roughly 2 inches wide, wrapped some sheet metal around it (optional, but is more realistic), and put it directly down the middle of the pressboard, and srilled it in using 1 1/4" screws. This piece of wood will be used to keep the 2 pads about 2 inches apart (they aren't right next to eachother in the arcades). Then, I placed the pads on the board where I wanted them to be drilled in. After that, I took out each of the corner bolts, and replace them with 1 1/4" screws. Then, you can cut the pressboard down so that it's lined up along the edges with the pads, but I didn't (so I could put backbars behind )

RO Clone pad confirmation:
Cutriss wrote: | LinuxRacr wrote: | Cutriss wrote: | Okay - I think it's been said that the pads these guys sell are RO knockoffs, right?
So, they already have control boxes out for their metal pads which appear to have an identical (DB-15) interface to the RO pads. PLUS...they have an Xbox MC slot in them, which, AFAIK, the RO control box won't have.
So, anyone have one of these yet that can give me more information? |
Hmm...That looks EXACTLY like the one I ordered. I ordered the 8 arrow version. The control box looks exactly the same. I have played on these pads, and after a few weeks of HEAVY use, you will have to mod them. The arrows look to be lexan, as the show no signs of cracking at all. I weigh over 200 lbs, and have pounded the hell out of it. No cracks. | Well, I got it in today...and I guess this should answer all the questions anyone has had about it:
It *IS* the RedOctane control box. Complete with the logo.
So, let's get this straight. It was *cheaper* to buy from a Canadian importer who imported the box (or had the manufacturer build extra for them) and then export it again.
At any rate, I doubt RedOctane will be happy to hear about this. Using knockoff products is one thing...Using your company's logo on it is something entirely different. |

hey, i, for the most part, read basically the entire 83 pages of this thread, and was still unable to fully get this question answered, so I've decided *gasp* to actually ask a nobbish question about the available pads!
ok anyways, i dont got much money, im just a 16 year old with no job so far and have got a couple hundred saved up, and I wanted to know how the "discount-auction : konamix ddr metal pads" are?
(i.e. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=21185&item=8121278151&rd=1
so i wanted to know if they bend when you play on them, if you can just kinda tap/hover over the buttons to make the register or if you have to really stomp on it to get an arrow, if i can swap out the button images they have defaultly on the pad for some random different pictures (wierd, i know, but something i wanted to do), and also if it will last through a 165 lbs maniac max300 kinda guy for months on end?
or am i basiaclly just screwed, and need to get a cobalt flux (eew on the price)
please help me out.... and dont jus't say "get a cf" or something
thanks! _________________

I received my RO metal pad today and I just wanted to post a little review for anyone thinking about purchasing one. For starters the top right arrow was cracked. I think they shipped me a pad someone had returned because most of the screws on the pad are stripped inside so bad that you cant unscrew them. It was also scratched up pretty bad and dented in a couple places. Playing-wise, my modded soft pad does better. The arrows dont feel right and if you hit metal+arrow you miss. I'm gonna return it or exchange it. The pad isn't the worst I've ever played on, but imo its not worth 200+ dollars. |

If the correct pad is receieved in mint condition and modded, I think its just as good as the more expensive pad. It has the same features as those pads just w/o the warranty. I don't have these pads or seen anyone post a review, so when you get it, pls post your thoughts about it.
The arrows bends slightly in the middle. You can tap the button near the center but not at the corners due to the size of the copper grid.
As for new graphics, thats going to be difficult because it is directly pasted onto the arrow. Your better off making your own arrow from scratch with your custom graphics.
Your not screwed, not everyone can afford a CF. Just mod the pad before you play (if foil strip underneath arrow) and clean it regularly. At your skill level, parts of the pad may breakdown quickly such as the arrow and foam. Those can be easily replaced/fixed once it starts affecting your gameplay. The wiring may be another thing but those are suppose to be tucked away safely... I'm sure the pads will last for months as long as you know how to fix any problems that happen

have u noticed that all ebay auctions for metal pads do not allow in-store/store-front pickups? wth is with this... like i live if not 20 miles away from one guy, and he says that i can't just drive to him and pick it up. what, people have to make more money on overcharing shipping now or something? what is this.... _________________

I'm not trying to push this pad or anything; in fact I don't own one and have just ordered a Cobalt Flux. But I thought I would throw this out there.
Coupon code: TRIN20
which expires August 30th, 2004, gets you 20 dollars off the redoctance metal pad. It was on an advertising page from a local convention. |

Red Octane Metal pads are not worth $200, $180, or $150. They suck. |

Has RedOctane really gone downhill since last year? When I ordered their new RedOctane metal pad ($200) in August 2003, the pad worked like a dream, despite it's foil-copper-contact sensors.
The pad is still alive today, but now modded with sheet metal. However, I did not mod the pad because the arrows were giving out on me. The copper sensors were still in full working order; I just felt it was time I did the recommended metal pad mods. Since the mod, the pad has done no better or worse than it has done prior to the mod.
Also, I had great customer service with them that same year when I had questions about their return policies and my ignition pad. Took me about a day to get the answer back.
However, I know a few things that did change with RedOctane. They got a new worker, after the one I orignally dealed with a lot moved on to another job (I'm blaming nobody though). And maybe the new thin metal sensors are worse than the copper ones. Has anyone ever actually posted pictures of the new RO metal pads' contact systems?
