it is a skill that people can learn for themselves, therefore, all someone has to do is come up with a guideline for conveying the learning process to someone else. as a student music teacher, I've never had a problem teaching someone to play at least one note on any wind instrument (even in an 'instrument petting zoo' setting, where very small children try out different instruments). I have learned the process for teaching it, therefore this same process can be applied to teach someone else. so on a very basic level, DDR can be taught up to the point of being as proficent as the student is physically capable of being. the only thing that can't be taught is a skill beyond the person's capacity of learning and/or performing.
so the real question is, can DDR be learned? and the simple answer is "not by everyone, and not to the same level if they can learn it." |

It can be taight but it's very unlikely. It's all about the practice. If you don't practice you'll suck forever. If you do practice you'll become a great player. Simple as that. _________________

Oh it can be taught. No doubt about it, most particularities of DDR can be taught. All of DDR's theorics can be taughts, no problem. However, when you need to put those theorics into practice, then it's all up to your "pupil".
However, when it comes to abilities you acquire through experience, there's nothing you can teach anyone. Gaming experience becomes the teacher, at that point.
To sum it up: you can teach DDR all you want, but the results depends on your pupils. _________________

It takes a village...
Its a combination of a lot of things... beyond being a natural or learning...
-Natural coordination can hurry the learning process but artifical coordination adventually takes root in which you start to memorize patters subconcously and begin to anticipate steps.
-Basic gameplay tips are a wonderful aide... listen to what others have to say... most important thing i leared as a "by the way" type tip is that stepping on metal gets you nowhere... i used to use the center spot as my little island... tapping the arrows around me.
-You have... TWO feet... using one foot for three of the arrows and one foot for the other lonly arrow will get you through almost evrey song on basic... and nowhere else... as a general rule... alternate feet...
-Theres no way around it... you look kinda silly to anyone who doesnt understand the game... you have to forget the fact that you look a little rediculous and keep your head in the game...
-Study Study Study... This site has a great tool... the song lists... without them id probably still be missing the repeat gallops on Matsuri Japan instead of AAing it... memorize parts of songs that you cant read on the spot...
-Monkey see monkey do... watch people that know how do do a skill you are trying to learn... thats how i learned behind the back crossovers... remember which way the person is turned and which foot they are using to hit which arrow...
-Get it in your head... Download DDR songs and listen to them on a walkman, or in your car... just having the songs in your head will help you learn the steps... especially in noisy arcades where you cant hear the machine that well...
-Finnaly... PRACTICE... it takes time to lean how best to utilize each tip and trick in the game... you need to be on the dance pad as much as possable... _________________

Hey now, I've showed tons of people how to play DDR. But nothing can be accomplished without practice.
Wouldn't watching peoples movements while playing is the same as teaching yourself?
Course, knowing the songs by heart and natural talent DOES help. |

It all depends. I do believe strongly that it can be taught, but the rate at which some people reach higher ability may be faster than others. I have a friend who's been playing since the game made its debut here in the states, and I was better than him after a few months. some people who have played for a year are leaving light still, and there is nothing wrong with that. Myself, i was beating catas on heavy before my first month went by! It just takes a different amount of time for each individual. _________________

me to complete newbie: When an arrow gets to the top of the screen, you need to step on the corresponding arrow on the pad. You'll pick it up as you go.

I think that DDR can be taught, just the basics though, it's really up to the person you are teaching to train themselves how to move their feet across the pad, to not keep their feet in the middle of the pad, and just pad awareness (where their feet are on the pad), things like crossovers and turns/spins can be taught as well, but at a much later time... _________________

I am proud to say that I am a teacher of this game. I turned a slightly over weight man into a ddr machine who has surpassed me. I had to show this guy named Jeff the ropes and the basics. Keep both feet on both arrows, don't use the island technique, the gallops and so forth. He was barely passing basic songs when I found him and now he can double heavy mode songs without even looking. _________________
