Yes, another one of those comparison posts, but i was really interested which style of using your feet you prefer. Around here, most people play on their toes, except for this one guy, C.J. Everytime i see him he plays flat-footed, so i tried it, and got, it felt like it shook my brain about. It also seems to waste more energy for me and when i do it i constantly get stuck on the brackets. I guess its what u start out with...

Also, is there any scientific reason to play any of the two? If there is, then i will change my toe-esque style to get a better boost in gameplay.

There's also a lot of talk that playing flat-footed gives you grater PA. I again tried this, and did horrible. Playing toed, for me, also makes crossovers a heck of a lot easier.

So tell me what y'all think!

I play flat footed or stomping.I don't get as tired as I used to when I playing on the balls of my feet. And my PA has gotten alot better. It just takes practice to stomp.

I play flat-footed when I can. Sometimes I get toed up on faster songs, and that's when I get Greats. Playing flat-footed is much more accurate.

When I first started playing on heavy, I played on my toes. I learned to play flat-footed because, I agree, it's more accurate.

At first playing on your whole foot will "shake your brains about", but if you stick you it, you will get used to it, and your PA will improve.

...btw...it only takes about playing for a total of 6 hours on your whole foot before you get used to it.

Wellll...I play on both my toes and on the whole foot. Because I wear chunky boots and so I'm always on tiptoe. laugh.gif But, judging by the state of the bottom of my boots, I must bend my foot somehow...I dunno.

I think playing on your toes makes you quicker, but playing with the whole foot makes you more accurate.

I started playing on my toes/the ball of my foot. In the last month I've pretty much completely transitioned to playing only in the arcade and playing flat foot exclusively. It saves me a ton of energy, helped my PA a lot and just feels a lot better to me. Most of the other people I see around here play on their toes so I get a lot of questions about my style seeing as how I move very little while playing. Everyone I know that can pass any 10s (bag and Sakura excluded) either plays them flat foot, even if they don't play like that on most easier songs, or can only do them with the bar. I think there's some kind of connection. E13.gif

I use to play on my toes out of habit but then I read somewhere about how playing flat footed increases your PA so I gave it a try and AA'd my first arcade 9footer on the first try.

I agree... i play up on my toes and I can AA quite a few songs... it may have something to do with muscle... i walk evreywhere and used to play soccer... so i have pretty developed calf muscles... which, when your on your toes, is what you are using the most of...

Flat-footed seems to be all the rage these days, but I just don't get it... I play on the balls of my feet, and I can pass just about everything out there (LoM and PSM heavy/oni are the three exceptions). I have a reasonably good PA and a sizable number of AAs, as well. And, truth be told, I would rather watch someone move on the pad than slide their foot slightly to the side...

When you mean the ball of your feet you mean the front part right? Not the back?

I use the front ball of my feet for most of the balance. I'm not up to PA's, but I'm up to trying Full combos, so I use what I use now.

Toe's and flat footing....

I would say flat footing would be great for AAins songs with a steady arrow beat like Daikenkai (Heavy and Oni) or Brilliant 2U (Oni). Now... when songs have tiny spaces between them... it's good to go toes. Lemme give examples....

Your playing Max300 and you want to stay away from the bar... You flat foot till you get here...

Then you use your toes for that. I like to call the Chaos spots.

try that part of max 300 while flat footing and you'll see why most of the really good PAers do it that way. it is a lot easier to "drum" your feet when they are flat becase you aren't sinking into your steps the same way as when you're on the ball of your foot. it makes a louder sound that you can follow to really hear if you're in time with the music.

I don't know what all this talk of being "faster" is when you use your toes. it may seem like you're moving faster, but in reality it is because you have less control over yourself when you're balanced up on your toes. when someone plays flat-footed, you'll notice they usually have a hunched back, and their feet look like they are barely moving (take a look at the JSB legend of max video) because they don't have to be drawn up all that distance by your calf muscle. all the work when you flat foot is done by your thighs and hips.

most people step towards the inside of the arrows when they flat foot, making the distance from arrow to arrow smaller. any physics student can tell you that if you keep the same time (in this case the time between steps) and shorten the distance, the value for velocity will go up. so yar at all of you ball-of-the-foot players.

all that said, I flat-foot probably 90% of the songs in DDR. the only ones I don't flat foot are probably tsugaru and...well I can't think of anything else right now. only during the wide open gallops of that song do I go up on my toes because of the way they are timed. I go back on flat feet when they become 32nd note gallops.

I'm mostly a toes person. But at the arcade I do a lot more flat footing. Mostly because hard pads don't respond as well to toes.

On my toes, usually. For many reasons though...one being that in the arcade it's easier for me to move just my toe to the square than my entire foot, seeing as I'm short riiight.gif But you know.

I only use flat-foot when hitting the < > and ^v bits... or when the platform loafers come into play and hitting the pad with my toe makes me do a somersault into the machine! riiight.gif

well ive been attending alot of tourneys lately, the more recent ones have been northern ignition in farmington new mexico and southwest showdown in mesa arizona, and after watching such great ddr players such as MOMO, bing, robdog, jaime, and jsb, from what i could tell they all seemed to go flat footed and stomp to the beat. they even stomp during freezes just so they can keep the beat. and ill tell you iv seen them pull off alot of aaa's

me personaly though, i try to flat foot it, but i sometimes mess up and end on my toes. E4.gif
