Down where I play, there are some people who only like to play singles, however, they don't mind if people shadow them.
At the same time, there arn't alot of people that play down here, so we don't really mind waiting. Sometimes, only one person has money to play, so everyone else just watches, and usually someone shadows.
One guy down here hates it when people shadow him, he doesn't mind playing with people, but he won't let people shadow him. He claims he can "See that they are just shadowing out of the corner of his eyes".
What I'm getting at is, How is shadowing looked upon by other places. Do you guy's think it's an ignorant way of playing(because you don't pay), or do you think it's ok? _________________

When it comes down to it, Shadowing is okay if it is under consent of the other player. If it isn't, then it's not okay.
Because of this, I usually ask the person if I can shadow before I try to do it, even if it's most likely that he/she wouldn't mind.
(Personally, I hate it when people shadow out of nowhere, without asking. 8 times out of 10, the other player will get annoyed.) |

I usually would like it if the person asked to shadow. It reminds me of a funny sign on a techno motion machine-
Shadow dancers will be banned from arcade immediately...

Ohh, yeah, forgot to mention about asking.
(Yes I do ask, if they're in the middle of a song, I wait till it's over, then ask. Or, I wait till a pause in the song.)
Thanks for the input so far. _________________

Here's an example of when shadowing is just wrong:
Skinny dude that looks like he took ballet because his PA has more style than your FS gets on the platform next to scary Goth-wannabe anorexic girl and puts in one credit. SDTLLHTBBHPAHMSTYFS then plays on the 1P side while SG-WAG shadows on the 2P side. After the game is over, SDTLLHTBBHPAHMSTYFS moves over to the 2P side and shadows SG-WAG as she plays on the 1P side. So, took people played two games through mutual shadowing.
Of course, they don't seem to care that some people have to drive an hour and a half to get to the arcade and don't care to wait through two turns everytime two people go up. _________________

Alright. Here's my take on shadowing. I think Shadowing can be alright under a few circumstances:
A) You ask to play
B) It's a song you've never played and it's looks interesting to learn
C) It's a song you HAVE played and you would just like to do it for fun before your turn
I don't think shadowing is okay if you're broke..it's kinda like getting free play from other peoples money. Personal opinion though. I guess it could be alright for like one or two rounds, but then it's just plain mooching. _________________

Usually I do not mind, but if it's someone that looks rude and obnoxious to my mind, then I get annoyed. But of course I don't say anything... |

Personally, I hate ppl shadowing me. I can see them in the corner of my eye. If I want a shadow, I'll just go outside on a sunny day. If they asked first, I'll still say no, but thank them for asking. However, if someone just jumps on while I'm doing a song, I'll get upset and tell them to stop, and if they keep doing it, I'll push them off, kuz that's how much I hate shadowing. _________________

Being as I'm usually the only Heavy player in my arcade, most people can't shadow me very well. However, I have no problem, provided they A: ask, B: keep on beat (I don't care what notes they're hitting, but they'd better be on beat), and C: stop when/if I ask them to (usually if they're throwing me off).
It's preferable when others let me do the same with them. I always ask politely, as they're putting their credits in, whether or not they mind me shadowing on the pad. If they mind me shadowing on the pad, I then ask if they mind if I shadow off to the side, where they can't see me but I can see the screen. Very few people seem to mind that, at least.
In my opinion, it's a good way to work out technical problems without risking a failed game - as long as you're not messing up the other person, I don't see how it would be a problem. _________________

Not to be argumentative, but if someone were to play with you, you would still be able to see them out of the corner of your eyes. They might not have arrows on their side of the screen, but it's still the same (pretty much) as someone playing with you.
Yeah, it is a cheap way of playing, but if you shadow, you don't get to pick songs, you don't get a grade, you just get to practice your skills. Why pay to play a song you know you can't pass, but want to see the steps to, and practice? If the shadow opportunity is there, why not take it? _________________

It could be a problem if the player is trying to score as minimum greats as possible in a full combo. Sometimes the shadowing person could be off-beat, which could cause the player to lose a little bit of focus. This is very annoying to some, like myself.
(Especially when someone else can't stay on beat during MAX 300; things start to sound like a friggin machine gun went off...)
...so that's why I always stress asking before the song is played to shadow. Don't just get up there. We aren't psychic, so we don't know what the player's particular aim is with the next song.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind shadowing. I'm very tolerable. But common courtesy should be stressed when it comes to that kind of thing. |

absolutely ask BEFORE the song has begun. I dont like when I'm in the middle of a song and somebody starts trying to talk to me, whether thers a pause or not. As far as shadowing gos, If I want to shadow I just do it off the pad. It depends what Im doing, If Im just having fun like playing some hidden and cool songs I have no prob with ppl shodowing, but untill I get more than a darn 499 combo on So Deep, no thx. Get what i mean? ^^ _________________

I used to just jump up on the second pad and shadow complete strangers. After awhile, someone asked me not to do it and I realized it was pretty annoying, and stopped. I only shadow friends or let other people that ask shadow me. Though, there was an annoying gangsta poser that jumped up on the second pad acting like a spaz while I was playing oni, but I guess that isn't considered shadowing.

And this is coming from someone who shadows on a regular basis...Not surprised...

First of all, if it's not okay with me, then it's not okay, therefore there IS no opportunity to shadow. Besides, why the hell do I need to shadow for?
And didn't you make this thread to see how shadow'ers are looked upon? I told you how I look at them: They get shitted on because they throw me off. You're trying to justify shadowing with someone who despises it. And yes, even though you're not trying to be argumentive, you're about to start one. _________________
