Thanks for answering with such a detailed breakdown of your cost. I was wondering because I like to know if I can possibly get materials for cheaper. Do you have pics of your pad on the web?

Not at present. I'll take a couple of pics, and find somewhere to put them up in a day or two. I'll also take some picture of the assembly of pad number two when I get around to it if you are interested.

Hey if you send the pics to [email protected] i can host your pics for you

thx and what design did you use for your pad?

Basically it's a hybrid, with a bit taken from ddrhomepad, a bit from riptide, and probably a few others. The primary design determinator was the fact that I had a 4x8 sheet of plywood sitting in my garage, and I didn't want it to be really thick, or excessively heavy ( it is still pretty heavy tho) It is only a hair over 1-1/2" thick x 34 1/2" x 34 1/2" (including the surrounding frame) I have no idea how much it weighs, as I don't currently own a scale.

Look Herehttp://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=59254&start=0 the links are in the first post of this thread.

The biggest difference, to me, is in how the corners are attached. For ddrhomepad's pad the corner are attached to the metal platform pieces, and riptide's attach to plywood triangles and then down to your frame or base. There are other differences, but that's the one that stands out to me the most. I think that nearly all of our designd have to give at least a shout out to ddrhomepad's design, because it is the how-to that gave pretty much all the others their jumping off point.

A problem I know well (the money thing too E1.gif ) If you have a broadband connection I can send you a "share" from my Xdrive (that's how I got them from someone else) just pm me with the email that you want the notification sent to. If you don't have broadband you are probably better off just using the pictures on Riptide's site as the videos total out at 500 MB

Ah, I have a sort-of problem, it's not a problem yet, and probably shouldn't be aproblem in the future, but I wanted your input.

In the making of my pad, i used 1/2 inch plywood, instead of 3/4, and instead of a 2x4 base i use 1x2 wood. It's looking great, but this means i only have 1/2 and inch to have my arrow. I have been using riptides design mainly (kind of been freeballing it E13.gif ) and i was wondering if i should drop the screws and do like ddrhp's design to conserve space. How much does the sheetmetal contacts plus plexiglass meausure? is it pretty much the same as riptides design with the screws?

I dunno what the exact measurements... but the contacts inside can be quite a bit smaller than your plexiglass etc...

anyway, here are two pics (that I said I'd post) of my latest pad (with the other 3 behind it) and a close up of the 'bracket replacements'

hope it helps!

*edit* fixed, the links were not -wrong- per say... however they were designed to be only used in my forum... the links refuse to display elsewhere... however this should work.

His links are 'per-say' "wrong".
He's attempting to link to attachments on a different forum (or... a phpBB2 forum with the attachment mod), regardless, that doesn't work unless you track down the post and click the attachments yourself, which I wouldn't advise you to do E10.gif.

I have just finished testing a madcatz softpad's pcb for directional arrows, and it works fine, and its almost foolproof to solder, the contacts are enormous. If you are building a pad to replace a soft pad, use the softpads pcb

IMPORTANT I labeled left wrong, left is one to the right of the triangle

It goes --, Xb, Rt, --, Up, |Ground(the big box)|, Dn, Tr, Lf, --

I have been posting on the metal pad forum and had a question that they told me to post here. Hopefuly someone here knows. I've got a MyMyBox pad and I've already done the mod on it. I was wondering if I could also take the copper out and replace it with sheet metal as well. I would have to replace the foam and also resolder. I would think this would make the pad respond more easily no mater where I hit on the arrow, and not just the center. Do any of you know if this would work?

I have read all 107 pages and not really found many of the answer that i needed to start building my pad, so here is goes

I am worried about “shorting out my control” I have a gamepad brand controller , is it a better idea if I solder multiple grounds the controller rather than just one?

What about if I can connect a ground to a ground on a wall outlet of surge suppressor.

Is it okay to solder at the same points that the wires for the controller are connected to the board.

Is it okay to use the grounds for the L1 R1, L2 R2 buttons, does It matter if I take those buttons off?

AND SOME ADVICE AND HELP

A buddy of mine, who is in a welding program warned me about heating up zinc coated steel , that the fumes are very toxic, so be careful when soldering.

HOW TO MAKE A PAD FOR CHEAPER

Buy your metal in rolls rather than sheets. (flashing) 30 dollars to under 15

I found my plexiglass on the side of a bestbuy it was old display cases

You can find scraps of wood all over the place, check out construction sites

And last of all, do your homework online so you know what you really need, and what works best, especially in the case of controllers.

In re: shorting out pad. It is easiest to connect one wire to a ground in your controller then connect all of your button grounds to that wire. This still effectively grounds your pad buttons without overcrowding your controller PCB.

Grounding to an exterior outlet could also be useful, but it does increase the number of wires running out from the pad, and you still need to ground into the controller board to complete the circuits for the buttons to work.

I don't know if soldering to the same places that the wires are connected to the board would work or not, but I would not because it doesn't seem that it would run throught the controller chip that way. I could be mistaken though, as I'm not an electrical engineer, or anything. E4.gif

Yes, it should be ok. I just ripped the L & R buttons off completely from one of my controllers because I wanted to have more room for wires.

An excellent point, but not near as big a risk when soldering to it as when welding. Also, you should always solder in a well ventilated area because the fumes from rosin core solder are also toxic.

Having said that, I usually do all of my soldering in my basement office/workshop/computer room which is not very well vented, and I haven't noticed any ill effects. (it does stink though) E1.gif

You could probably do the mods you want but without actually having that pad in front of me I can't be totally sure it would be possible. You might want to ask here if you haven't already as someone might own this same pad and know a little more about it.
