Well, I just grabbed myself a redoctane ignition dual platform pad. I'm loving it so far, but it came with something that's bugging the heck out of me. All the xbox pads I've seen come with an extension cord for the headset, and I was happy to see that one was included with this pad as well, since this is my first console DDR setup and I didn't already have one.

Well, the plug won't even fit into the part the plugs into the controller. The plastic on the plug is too large to fit into the circular notch in the little cartridge thingie. (what the heck do you call those anyway?)

So, I'm about to grab a knife and start peeling off layers until I can jam the little sucker in there... but I've gotta say, this was a serious oversight.

Just order another one. They shouldn't be all that expensive.

no, it physically will not fit. The actual little metal part of the plug is the right size, it's just the rubber housing around it that's too big. I can't even get the plug half-way in because of that. Unless the people in the soft pad thread are good at long distance transformation magic, I don't think they can do anything about that.

edit: also, it's the soft pad thread... this isn't about the pad, so it would be off topic there. Stop treating me like a n00b, kthnx. (edit2: that was in response to the typical 'take it to the soft pad thread' answer I recieved that was later edited... for those you just joining in and noticing how insane this looks E1.gif )

If you're still having your problem, the only thing I can think of doing would be giving RedOctane a call/email about the problem, see if they can help/reimburse/replace your pad. Also, the problem could possibly lie with the headset not being 1st party. I really don't know much about headsets, I'm just trying to provide a possible solution or reason as to why this is happening. If you do have the 1st party Xbox Live headset, then I can see no reason why it shouldn't fit. RedOctane is very well known for its great customer service, and I'm sure they'd be glad to help.

I don't think it's the headset portion he's having a problem with. Xbox Live Communicator extension cables have a male connector at the point where it plugs into the Communicator itself and a female connector into which the Communicator headset is plugged.

His problem, if I'm reading it correctly, is that the male portion that plugs into the the Communicator base is designed in such a way that the plastic housing for the male end (the bit you grip) has a circumference larger than the Communicator base allows for male connections plugging into it. So the 1/16" metal prong fits fine, but the chassis of the plug is too large for the plug to seat properly.

And if the plug can't seat properly, the male connector will not insert fully. And if the male connector cannot insert fully, the headset won't work.

yeah Sinistar, you nailed it. I've e-mailed redoctane about the issue so that they can do something about it before sending any more out, but some quality time spent with a rather sharp knife fixed my problem. One of the larger serrations on the blade was the exact diameter that I needed, so I just shaved off the rubber on the plug until it fit easily into the cartridge.

The main reason I mentioned it in the first place is that it does raise a few questions about redoctane's quality control. I figure if everyone had to resort to using a knife, there'd be a few DDR players missing some fingers. Like I've always said.. it's good to put your heart's blood into what you do, but you don't have to prove it visually.

Well, they only recently started shipping control boxes with the headset adapter, so people may not have had enough time to complain.

On the other hand, Red Octane's manufacturer is contracted out, so it's not like they visually supervise the output. I'm sure they've done Q/A before starting the assembly line, but this is something that could be overlooked. It's not necessarily Red Octane's fault that Microsoft (or Flextronics in this case, or whatever applicable 3rd party) was inconsistent with their cable design.
