Uh, I'm a rather big fan of classical music, but I'd never heard Winter/V before hearing it in DDR, and to this day still haven't heard it outside of the DDR/PIU context. So I don't think it's that popular.
The fact that they used that song of all the choices they had was obviously because it was in DDR too, so they knew they would get more attention (I know I literally came running into the living room when I heard Winter playing, because I thought it was a DDR commercial). This isn't criticism, just an obvious strategy. Even though I like DDR better, I have nothing against PIU, and nothing against the commercial itself. Konami had their chance, and they really dropped the ball this time. Overall I thought the commercial was humorous, though I didn't like the obvious uber-asian player stereotype. And the part with the entire audience shadowing made me groan out loud. Very lame
I think the commercial would have been a lot more effective if they had used (or pretended to use) a harder song. Whatever they were stepping to didn't even seem that hard. I think people would have been a lot more "impressed" by the shoes if they had been competing on the PIU equivelant to Legend of Max. _________________

This is Pump it Up we're talking about. There are like 20 of those. ;-) And Winter is completely insane on Crazy (I can't even clear it).

I'm not quite sure if this is my memory failing me or not but I remember there being a copyright on the USA copyright site for a dance game in 1997 by Pioneer... made it was something else like those uh toy things at stores... but I can't find anything else on it.
Anyhow... the commercial sucked in my opinion. I'm a PIU player who recently got into DDR (PIU 2 years, DDR - 5 months) I have nothing against the shoes... but if they are truly good for playing Pump it Up you'll be able to easily hit a triple on Crazy mode without dropping... which I doubt you can do with these shoes. |

I thought the commercial was funny...anything that lets the general "non-music game knowledgable public" know more about or see more of the music game genre is good for everyone and every music game I say.
As for Pump It Up/DDR and which can be used where...I've read on here (DDRFreak) before that Andamiro has the patent license to release PIU and PIU machines here in the US but Konami does not. Meanwhile it is vice versa in Japan (Konami = OK, Andamiro = no-no). Which is why every mix (nearly) is a bootleg Japanese mix brought over to US shores illegally. Yes I know people either a) don't read or b) ignore that warning screen but it does say (to the effect of) "this game not for sale outside Japan" blah blah for the DDR mixes we all play.
As for the music...who gives a crap. They could've started playing Toxic by Britney Spears and ACTED like the people were dancing to it and the commercial would still be cool IMO...again my whole positive thought is that it's another place and way that more people can see what a music genre'd game looks like or plays like, which in turn makes more people interested in it and gives it more media coverage. PIU...DDR...EyeToy Groove... I don't give a crap it helps them all.
And I think those shoes are the worst athletic shoes I've ever seen; every time I see Nike Shox I wonder WTF someone was thinking when they bought them. What a gimmick...

Excuse me? Vivaldi's Four Seasons has got to be one of the most overplayed classical pieces in existence, maybe second to Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. To say you're a "big fan of classical music" and have never even HEARD of it is ridiculous.

It wouldn't have made a lick of difference to the general public. Nobody cares, or has time to analyze, how difficult a song is, if they've only seen the game casually at an arcade. It's all arrow stomping to most people. _________________

Look, the challenger didnt play PiU, he played DDR. The auditions where done on DDR because the people doing the auditions had *NO* Idea what they where looking for. _________________

Ok, well I'm not going to debate what makes someone a "big fan", but I've been in concert bands/orchestras for 9 years of my life, and listen to the local classical station on my radio almost exclusively, and I've never heard it. I'd heard of it, but never actually heard it. At least not the "Winter" portion anyway... I suppose it's possible I heard one of the other movements and wouldn't have recognized it. |

For your first sentence, that is your opinion, and you are entitled to your opinoin. For your second sentence, I agree. The commercial was not 'bad' or anything, and I actually foud it quite cool, although corny. For your last sentence, its obvious you know nothing about PIU. DDR's PARANOiA Survivors, Maxs, Sakura, Bag, and other 10 footers don't even compare to PIU's Nightmare diffculty. Not only that, but some Crazy songs (Slam, Vook, maybe Mr. Larpus) that aren't even considered the hardest songs are harder than DDR's hardest songs. Do some research first, and try to fix your spelling and grammar a bit =). _________________

Note: I've read pages 1 & 2 only (if it matters).
DDR vs. PIU: DDR is better. PIU is harder to read, has worse music, and just is all around stupid. I mean, DIAGONALS? I may sound stupid, but I don't like it. DDR allows you to move faster, too.
Is either a ripoff?: BOTH are ripoffs. Observe: http://www.weaintcool.com/pictures/articles/peripherals/powerpad.jpg Nintendo's Power Pad.
The commercial: C-R-A-P. DDR is more fun to watch. And that commercial just plain sucked.

Well the one and only reason why they used it is because the PUI is a cheaper machine that a DDR machine.
ANd the other reason for this was that with the stuff in the press with DDR that will atract people because to genreal pulic will look at them play PIU as them playing DDR which has sorta become a sport.
I don't think it was C-R-A-P.
I think it was put together very well (For Nike anyway).
I think that there is to big of deal because they use a PUI machine instead of a DDR machine. _________________

Its almost like PIU is taking over DDR! i went to the movies the other day and PIU was there, then i went to the skatepark...PIU....then the arcade..they replaced 1 of 2 ddr machines w/....PIU!!!! |

I'll say this agian a PIU machine is cheaper than A DDR machine most places will take the PIU machine.
A PIU machine only cost between $1550.00 - $4995.00, where a DDR machine cost between $2095.00 - $5295.00.
So most places will look at the $1550.00 machine instead of other stuff. _________________

Price had nothing to do with their decision. They went to a local arcade to do the filming. _________________

Ok, you're entitled to your opinion but your reasons are really lacking.
PIU is harder to read? Why? Because it doesn't have solo arrows? You know what, I'm sick of people acting like DDR minus solo arrows equals sucks. Solo arrows are the dumbest thing to play DDR with and it's even more dumb that they force both players to use them even if only one picks them. I find myself frequently using flat arrows because I'm sick of the "n00b color" scheme of solo arrows. Has worse music? Ok, again your opinion but I don't see how it differs much other than PIU has more hip-hop and r&b meanwhile DDR is more electronica/techno. Just all around stupid? Come on man...nice one. Why is it stupid...because it's a DDR competitor? Well, welcome to the "anti-PIU people group because we don't like competitors to the DDR crown"; that's what kills me about 95% of all PIU haters is that they see it as a threat and they never play it to even see if the game is good enough or not so they just dog it just for the hell of it.
swimmerkev wrote: | I mean, DIAGONALS? I may sound stupid, but I don't like it. DDR allows you to move faster, too. |
Diagonals were in Solo mix my friend. So if you're basing the use of diagonals to equal that the game is stupid, then by your basis, DDR is stupid too 'cause Konami used it before. DDR allows you to move faster? Why...because Konami bothers to do nothing but crank up the BPM meter and add more steps than are really necessary? Give me a break. People thought Drop Out would be the end-all, be-all DDR song because of how fast it was. What was it...260bpm or was it 280? Anyway, then comes Max300. Ooh...300bpm. Maxx Unlimited steps that up a notch, and then Legend of Max does the same. Finally we get Max Period and 600bpm and I guarantee you that it won't end there. I'm waiting for the lawsuits when a DDR song gets too fast and the arrows are too much and someone keels over and dies or breaks a leg bone and sues Konami for it. It's a frickin' joke the way that Konami has no other talent to make DDR harder except to make the songs faster and put more bull$#!t steps in the songs...at least Andamiro had enough smarts to realize "hey, let's put a button in the middle, 'cause that'll screw EVERYONE up and make our game much harder".
I could go on and on all day but I'll just simply end it this way...
I've played DDR for over 6 years and I've played PIU for about 6 months total. I gave up on DDR about that 6 months ago that I started playing Pump because DDR has been the same stale game that it was when 5th Mix came out. The only way they have ever tried to make it different is with solo arrows (diagonals, not the color crap) and battle mode (one of the best things they ever came up with) and Konami took both features out of the game. I have since taken Pump up and realized that IMHO at least, it is a more fun game to play. You (or anyone) can nitpick about Pump's music all you want but the fact remains that Pump has some good music and some bad music just as much as DDR does. Do we all forget the utter garbage that is "Let Them Move"?!? Not one single DDR game has been without a few songs that people hated, and Pump isn't the same way either. I like Pump more not only because it's something different and it's more challenging to me but also because the game itself, in both music and artwork - is more anime based and aside from video games, anime is my 2nd love.
Well, actually - it's not that I've "given up" so to speak on DDR; I still play it but now it's mainly at home (Ultramix) and I'm looking forward to the US release of Extreme...but give me two open machines, one Extreme and one Pump (one of the newer releases 'cause those are what I'm most familiar with) and I'll go straight for the Pump machine.
Oh yeah and as for the Power Pad, dude, like a whole 1,000 people ever owned one of those and maybe another 500 people got to play on one. I played World Class Track Meet a whole one time and thought the idea was stupid. Apparently Nintendo did too because (AFAIK) that's the only game that was released for it. _________________
