Recently, my computer died due to a virus. After getting it back up and running, one of the first things I did was to reinstall my DWI. The first two times I tried it, I had a bunch of DLL errors.

Okay, fine, I fixed those, and the program still wouldn't run due to a "system error". So, I deleted the copy of DWI I had installed before I got the virus, along with the one I redownloaded. I also got rid of Stepmania which I had been trying (in vain) to use instead of DWI after discovering my DWI wouldn't work.

I then proceeded to redownload DWI, and ran it before copying all of my simfiles over, just to make sure it worked before I copied them all over (since it takes forever). The program worked, which was cool, and so I copied over my simfiles.

Now, when I try to run it, I get an error message. It says "Unable to initialise sound". I have no idea what's wrong with it, because the only change I made to my DWI after it successfully ran was to copy my simfiles over, and I know those all worked just fine before.

Does anybody know what's up with this, and how I can fix it? I'm going to attempt to delete and reinstall the program once more, but if that doesn't work, I'm stumped. Help?

did you get the correct sound driver? are you able to listen to just the mp3s by themselves? that could be a problem. also I've found that when certain programs crash it can take out your sound driver, forcing you to restart your computer to get your sound working again. also make sure nothing else is running that could be using your sound card (winamp, windows media player, etc.) and if all else fails, try reinstalling your sound driver.

My sound driver appears to still be working fine (the only one that got messed up was my video driver), and I can listen to the MP3s fine, and I had no other sound-using programs running. The latter isn't particularly important, either, because I used to be able to run Winamp, AIM, and DWI all at once, all three of which use sound. I don't know why this might have changed...

EDIT: Hmm...my Winamp appears to object to playing my MP3s. Maybe it just doesn't like my simfiles anymore. I'll try moving the MP3s out of the songs folder to see if it will run without any songs.

EDIT II: Nope. I moved the simfiles out of the DWI folder and I still get the same error message. Most likely, Winamp was the problem with the MP3s, not the MP3s themselves. But either way, the program doesn't run with, or without, the sims.
