I just ordered two RedOctane pads, and they did not need to be modded. I opened them both up, and they both use steel sheets rather than foil. They work well, although it seems I fail to trigger the back arrow sometimes when I step near the bottom of it... perhaps this'll just train me to step near the middle, which is good I suppose. |

When I bought this pad, it turned out to be a tx-1000 with acrylic arrows as opposed to polycarbon. I'm not currently sure if the dealer is selling the tx-1000 (not as pictured) or pads with polycarbon.
I'm happy with tx-1000 pad for the past 3 months doing 7-9 fts songs. It's very responsive in the center part of the arrow but its not activated if you press on the corners. The 4 screw setup is very convenient to do maintenance. I did the sheet metal mod to my pad which improves the contact system durability. Despite the arrows being acrylic, none of the main arrows have cracked (top left arrow had a cracked when it I first got it but it doesn't seem to get any worse). Pictures of my tx-1000 are here. |

Bah, just my luck that you got one as pictured. Does the pad have aluminum foil underneath the arrow? If there is, then I'd suggest you put sheet metal on top of them because the foil is not durable at all.
Is the arrow, when you look at its thickness, cloudy or kinda clear?
Oh yea, is there a way you can post a picture of the pad? |

My metal pad is going to arrive by the end of the week. Can anyone tell me how to check if the panels are really polycarbon?
Also, how can I check if it needs any kind of modding? |

If you look at the side of the arrow, clear/see-through is polycarbon and cloudish is acrylic. I'll post some pictures of the difference asap.
If there is aluminum foil underneath the arrow, then you need to do the sheet metal mod. Thats the only major mod that the pad really needs. |

Pictures would be awesome!
There's not any risk in damaging my pad by checking for the aluminim foil, is there? And are there guides for that around?
/me is being cautious about this... after all, it was $140. |

As long you don't yank the arrows off, taking is apart would hurt the pad. The sheet metal pad is here. What brand of pad is that and where'd you get it from? |

I'm currently trying to decide whether to get this pad (from ngult) or a RO metal pad.
My question is, should I care if the pad has the bottom side arrows (the RO does not)? Are there plans for future versions of DDR to utilize these arrows?
After paying shipping on the 8 arrow pad, the price is close to that of the RO. On one hand the ngult pad has all 8 buttons, while the RO is a more proven (reliable) pad. I don't know much about the ngult pad because no one has posted a review on it, but I do know that it has polycarbonate buttons. |

I don't see much use for btm corners arrows for DDR except for extra buttons for triangle and square. If the middle panel was a step, then you can use the extra arrows for Pump It Up.
The arrows are polycarbonate. I can't find any exact reviews of the pad from that dealer but I have a post of a pad that is probably the same one:

So, they already have control boxes out for their metal pads which appear to have an identical (DB-15) interface to the RO pads. PLUS...they have an Xbox MC slot in them, which, AFAIK, the RO control box won't have.
So, anyone have one of these yet that can give me more information? |
Hmm...That looks EXACTLY like the one I ordered. I ordered the 8 arrow version. The control box looks exactly the same. I have played on these pads, and after a few weeks of HEAVY use, you will have to mod them. The arrows look to be lexan, as the show no signs of cracking at all. I weigh over 200 lbs, and have pounded the hell out of it. No cracks. | Well, I got it in today...and I guess this should answer all the questions anyone has had about it:
It *IS* the RedOctane control box. Complete with the logo.
So, let's get this straight. It was *cheaper* to buy from a Canadian importer who imported the box (or had the manufacturer build extra for them) and then export it again.
At any rate, I doubt RedOctane will be happy to hear about this. Using knockoff products is one thing...Using your company's logo on it is something entirely different. |
If your comfortable with ebay and willing to settle w/o a warranty for a cheaper price, I'd recommend ngult pads over RO. They have the polycarbon arrows, metal frame, and 3 inch space in the back, and the same wiring system.
But I'm not too sure about the extra arrows. Maybe you can use them for replacements just in case the main arrows crack Its only like another 5 dollars for 2 more arrows? |

Great info, this will really help in my decision making process. My main concern was if DDR will be supporting the bottom side buttons in future releases, if that's not going to happen, then I won't shell out the extra bucks for it (although their 8 button model is just a few dollars more than their 6 button model).
My final decision will come down to the better warranty vs cheaper price like you mentioned, I'll have to think about that one some more.
BTW, you mention that I'd have to mod it in the future, what mod are you referring to, and is it hard to do (I know little about electronics)? |

Sheet metal mod here. Do it before you play to increase the contact system durability.
Doesn't the ebay pad come cheaper than RO when you including shipping for both? Yea that a hefty shipping cost because the pad is coming from Canada. If it was a US based dealer, the metal pad on ebay would ship for $20 less like judydeals
Those pads have polycarbon arrows and the review of those pads seems to be very good. |

Yes, including shipping the ngult pad is about $40 cheaper. Like I said it will come down to a cheaper price (ngult pad) vs a better warranty (RO pad).
I emailed ngult asking him what kind of contact is beneath the arrow buttons. If there is a metal contact beneath the arrows I don't have to perform this mod, correct? |

If a sheet of metal is used as opposed to two aluminum strips, then it is unnecessary. I think someone posted that RO now has a sheet metal underneath their arrows rather than aluminum foil. But the mod isn't expensive: $6-10 sheet metal, duct tape, and tin snips and took about 30mins for 6 arrows, plenty sheet metal left over for like 10 more arrows. |

Hi I emailed ngult earlier and got a response saying that they use foil on copper but are expecting to receive a new shipment of pads that use metal on copper in 4-5 weeks.
I also bought that custom made pad on ebay that someone mentioned earlier in this thread - when I get it (probably not until next week unless UPS ships on weekends (?) ), I'll post up some reviews! |

I just received my response back from ngult as well, and he did say that it has foil and copper contacts under the buttons, so the mod would be necessary.
I also emailed someone who purchased the ngult pad and he replied with a very favorable response. He said it came in excellent condition, is comfortable, is reponsive, and can take one hell of a beating.
Has it been confirmed that the latest RO pads have sheet metal contacts under their buttons? If not is there a way I can contact RO to ask them about this? |
