|
|
you'll let me know if this topic has been started already, and then direct me there, right?
OK, then: It seems every DDR-related site has a link to some news article proclaiming the new "fad called DDR" where you get up and exercise while actually having fun and whatnot, and enumerating the numerous health benefits and weight-loss-success stories. BUT are there any negative side-effects of DDR? I do mean health-wise; being labelled "homosexual" and having stereotypes obviously means that there are social downsides, and of course pregnant women and people with heart problems shouldn't play, as with all roller-coaster rides, but has anyone experienced any health-related problem from playing DDR? Have there been any studies about the long-term effects of playing DDR? |

Well, in my area, some of us have what we call the Curse of MAX 300. After the first time someone beats MAX 300, they'll get sick.
The first time I beat it, I was so sick that I was bedridden for three weeks and had to miss school the whole time. A friend of mine beat it for the first time, and he threw up seven times later that night. In the case of another friend of mine, the curse seems to attack preemptively. Any time she even thinks of beating MAX 300, she'll become almost fatally ill, but we think that one's a coincidence. _________________

I don't know about any studies
but i can imagine that playing ddr is not THAT good for your joints. (I hope that is the right word)
because you hit the floor hard with your feet repetetive.
It's exactly the same thing about jogging. And if thats not good for your joints, ddr can't.
I hope it's understandable what i wanted to say.
Another thing happened to me yesterday. I hadn't played for some days and was a little bit tired. After playing some fast courses (without doing a warmup) i got realy sick. And I thought i have to throw up. But it wasn't that bad and it was gone after a while.
So DDR is vey exhausting for your body and you should be carefull. If your boddy is begging for a break, don't keep on dancing.
I know thats hard.
Sometimes i think i'm addicted. Just keep on dancing although my legs are DYING! |

Whenever I pass a 10 footer (not including bag or sakura), I puke my guts out. I guess that's not a very good thing. It happens about 80% of the time. _________________

so something along the lines of doing a super strenuous run or workout -- high impact, and don't do it right after you eat. Give your body time to rest properly between dancing sessions, and don't push it if you really can't.
That's good to know, because I introduced this to virtually my whole [extended] family (or so I like to think), and we've got lots of little kids (pre-adolescent), and I wanted to know if there were any badly negative side-effects before encouraging them to go further with this.
Thanks to everyone who replied. |

Heh, i generally eat while i play. I haven't had any problems being sick to my stomach or vomiting.
The main negative-side effect i've expirenced from DDR:
Buying new shoes and having horrible ankle pains for a few weeks.
Ingrown toe nail.
Stopped breathing at the end of Paranoia Survivor, blacked out while gasping for air, came to, hopped back on the pad and continued. |

1) I can eat a full meal and play DDR, I guess it differs with people. I also have a really strong stomach, I guess that helps.
2) I only have one sore joint, my right knee. I doubt it's DDR related, DDR is taking it's vacation from me.
The only negative side affects of DDR for me is a severe burning when I play too long, my ribs and stomach feel like I'm on fire, and sometime, I pull a muscle or ligament in my rib cage and it hurts to walk. _________________

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

Um... I really havn't noticed any really horrible bad sides, unless you consider the following to be bad: 1)Meeting lotsa new ppl, 2)losing 40 lbs, 3)More endurance, and 4)occupying my time with something other then eatting and sitting
But honestly, I have a CF pad and I play barefoot... every once in a while I move too far back and slice my foot open... blood makes the pad a little less responsive, but I've only had to put a band-aid on it _________________

I've messed up the bottoms of my feet a couple times. Right now I've got a blister the size of a quarter on the bottom of one and the pain everytime I press an arrow with that foot really doesn't help me play much. |

Yeah I tend to have EXTREMELY BAD stomach cramps when I don't warm up and even when I do warm up. And my ankles will start to hurt too, but I always think that it's worth it cuz DDR is so awesome. And I also tend to have a pain in my bum sometimes when I play like say, all day nonstop... go figure... |

If you have the flimsy pads and play on concrete floors. It will put stress on your ankles and joints and may cause pain and swelling later.
Over-straining your lungs
If you look at the screen a loooong time, it may effect your eyes (i see arrows when i close my eyes)
Vomiting like how others have said
Not really health-wise but, i guess if you play a LOT and you sweat like a waterfall, possibly dehydration?
Thats all i can really think of right now
REGARDS

Yeah...I have a RedOctane Ignition 2.0 pad and a pair of the LevelSix Deluxe V2.1 pads, and have been recommending those pads to people. Those seem to be doing pretty good; the wood-clad floor I dance on has concrete beneath it. The people I recommended the pads to dance on softer surfaces (using masonite between the DDR pads and thick carpet, and a hardwood floor above a basement).

and see the screen "stretch out" when the arrows stop, like in Ecstasy or Healing Vision Angelic. Do you play the arrows with your eyes closed like I do? Heh, I got that way w/ tetris, seeing the seven different pieces fall whenever I closed my eyes. |
