I am told that I play way more naturally then most players when I do play. So maybe there is some style to that. _________________

Freestylers who do routines-
Do you find yourself freestyling when you just play for fun?
I ask because since I started putting routines together, I find it much easier to freestyle songs when I'm just playing normally (as in un-rehearsed)
Captain Canada- nice stuff, do you do any doubles routines, or do you stick to singles? |
Funny you bring that up...tonight I actually thought to myself, "Improv'ing isn't playing for fun anymore, it's me working to try to make my unpreparedness look good." Maybe it was just a bad session or something, but these days, I can't get into what I'm doing if it's on the spot...it just feels like I'm recycling the same old drop-of-a-hat crap arm moves.
So I find that I enjoy freestyling a lot more when it's not just thrown together/unrehearsed. Once I just lay everything out beforehand, then I get to look at my moves as a whole, what works, what doesn't. That helps me move on. And now that I've planned out a some kinda-routines (see, I'm a lazy fuck, On the Jazz was mostly improv with a few planned spots) anything less would be...uncivilized.
I usually do singles, too. I memorized AtG on doubles, but it took way too long, wasn't fun, never got around to routining it. I love Beginner, too, which doesn't help if I want to move into doubles. *shrug* _________________

No matter what, I'm always waving my arms in some fashion. I'm surprised I haven't hit any people yet.
Once and a while I'll try in a move that gives me a good idea for a routine. |

Comment on your My Summer Love video: it was, how should I put it... "OOOOKKAAAAAYY!"
Seriously though, who were those blokes in the vid quoting the magic of Dave Chappelle, and how long are we gonna ride the lil' Jon thang?? _________________

Steven, methinks you stole JP Money's "heartbeat" in MSL. But nice shirt, and good improv. =)
Any way to get brighter videos? _________________

to be honest, i didnt read all 34 pages. i read the first couple and let me say this:
miss toy, excellent job on summarization.
however, i see people saying things like "watch other dancers, use their moves" etc.
how can you be ORIGINAL if you use other peoples moves? on the pad or off? how is taking a broken leg shootdown from wiggles and putting on a ddr pad any different from taking a move or routine you saw a ddr player do and imitating it in the next tournament?
im a dancer, i do mostly funk styles and liquid, and let me tell everyone right now that taking a "move" from a dancer and putting it into ddr ISNT DANCING, its biting. and its disrespectful to say the least.
and about miss toy's comment about "how many times do you see someone do a handslap or knee plant on a dancefloor" (or something along those lines), i see it quite often--its called LOCKING, and its one of the most respected dance styles world wide. everyone thats seen lots of the vids of west coast ddr freestylers have probably seen a lot of locking moves incorporated. i know for a fact that Lil B incorporates locking, whether he knows it or not.
as far as my tips go for freestyling, i try to do things ON THE PAD that normally people in the audience wouldnt be able to do OFF THE PAD. when you watch someone do a bar hop you're probably thinking "...whats so special about that? even i could do that" (or insert any ordinary freestyle "move" to replace "bar hop", you get the point). when you see someone do a backflip you think "wow, (s)he just did that ON DDR, i cant even do that on a trampoline for X's sake!" or something to that effect.
im not saying go try extraordinary moves like backflips on ddr, but do things that mean something and that are special to you. things that you know other people cant do. i met a guy once on the dance floor that could dislocate his shoulders and elbows and make boxes and do liquid very well behind his back. i was IMPRESSED. i know for a fact that i cant do what he can because i cant dislocate my elbows and when i DO dislocate my shoulders i dont have enough control to really do anything with it. but after talking to him about it he said he had never realised that anyone would be so impressed with it, he thought it didnt look good at all, but i definately think otherwise.

the first FS routine i designed was on butterfly standard. i did it facing the machine. it wasn't in a contest, but it does attract crouds in the arcade _________________
