Heh, I suppose that is true...

Thanks for the quick response, I will be hunting a set down from ebay. My wife and I played for 6 minutes and she got hooked, we were worried about the cost of getting set up when we thought we needed a ps2 or xbox. When I saw the psx version online that sealed the deal.

Thanks again,
ptd

I have a quick question that I am sure is really obvious regarding the vortz pad- are they compatable with the Playstation One as well as PS2? My gut says yes, and I realize that it is compatable with the psx game, but I just want to make sure before I bid. I don't have a ps2 and really haven't kept with with the compatability issues with controllers. Thanks to anyone who can answer!

All pads are PSX/PS2. Can you imagine how much of a pain analog steps would be? E10.gif

Ok, since we've been talking about Chair Mats, Wooden planks, etc...

What should I do for mine? I have one of those lame cheapo pads that has no foam inside, it's just the sticky surface on the bottom.

I was thinking of doing the plywood/particle board mod, but I'm not sure.

its not that bad. i went through 13 pads.

im going with metal pad now. even though i had one that sux. the reason bout soft pads is that, when u play ddr alot like me, it starts to burn ur foot. feels like ur outside wearing no shoes in the hot hot sun. E13.gif

by the way, would putting it into a car trunk do anything, its a tight fit, but, nothing is really scrunched up or anything do any damage to the pad?

it can make the soft pad melt or softer making it hardder to play.

Alright, because he responsiveness of my Ignition 2.0 has spiraled down drastically. I hope its just me because I really am strapped for cash. Buy a cobalt would dispose of all cash i have, but, it is probably is most definitly worth it. I just need some money so I won't be bankrupt if I order a cobalt.

I'd like to add about modding your cheapy soft pad.

I got a $20 Mad Catz pad yesterday, and played with it for a short while with no moding. I was able to go to Home Depot today to get the stuff i was needing to mod it.

Got 6 feet of plastic floor covering. It was only 27" wide so i needed to put 2 layers on to cover the whole pad, which is 32" x 36" 2$/foot = $12

I got double sided carpet tape. $4 (Used about 1/3 of it i think)

Got black duct tape. $6 (big roll, only used a fraction of it)

Now i had looked into wood, which most people have used, but while wandering around Home Depot i found something that i went ahead and bought and used, which may work out better.

Its Owens Corning Extruded Polystyrene Insulation.

Its the pink sheets of thick foam they use to insulate houses before they put the exterior walls on.
Its spongy but stiff, and it seems like it would take a good beating and stay flat and offer decent cushioning.

I got a 4'x8'x 1/2" sheet (good enough for 2 pads, if i ever decide to get a second pad) for only $9

I cut off a 3' length, placed the dance pad in the middle of it, and traced around it, then put down the carpet tape so it covered a good bit of the area, then put the pad down and pressed it into place.

Then i duct-taped the pad down around the edges.
Then i cut the vinyl floor covering so it would cover the pad with scissors, and taped the 2 peices together with wide clear box packing tape which i already had.

Then i duct-taped that down to the foam as well.

Then i used a razor-knife and trimmed off the excess foam.

So the whole thing cost me $31 and i got enough stuff left over for another pad except the vinyl covering which would be another $12, so a total of $43 to mod 2 pads.

I havent played on it yet (feet are stil sore from playing last night without shoes. erg) but it seems very solid, much lighter then wood and will offer decent shock absorbtion while playing.

Ill report back here how i like it and how well it plays later on.

Just wanting to let you know about the insulation stuff may be a good substitute for plywood.

Ok despite my sore legs, i played a couple games.

The pad defiantely seems more responsivel; I got more Perfects it seems, and since the pad is now reinforced, i didnt feel the need to play delicately compared as to how i play at the arcade, which improved my gameplay a fair ammount.

The pad is firm but soft. If i land on the ball of my foot, it seems to leave a minor dent which smooths back out in a second or 2.

It plays great, feels a lot better and seems more responsive. On top of that it probably tripled or more the life of the pad, which makes it well worth it.

Edit:

Ok, ive now played a bunch of game on this foam., which sits on a hardwood floor.
I play heavily favoring my right foot, as i havent gotten used to moving ,my left foot around too much, so most of the game i pivot on my left foot that sits in the middle of the left arrow.
The foam has now compressed into a groove where my left foot usually sits and doesnt seem to spring back after i leave it alone for a while.
I may have to make a little mound from my extra foam to fill in that groove.

Im gonna revise my info and suggest that if you try this foam core as a mod, to go for the thicker stuff. I used 1/2", where there was also 3/4" and 1" stuff, which was more expensive.

Alright, I need some opinions on a mod for an Ignition. It's the Vortz games V2.5 pad for Xbox. There's two of them, both off ebay. Well, I've looked at the chairmat mod, and I'm definitely doing some sort of Tommygun-style mod for it (Is it possible to put down a pad cover and then tape it to wood even though it's an ignition?). But I've also noticed that both RO and BNS offer hard inserts for ignitions, and I've been thinking that if I bought a hard insert, it would solve the problem that the chairmat mod solves. So pretty much, I would end up making the insert harder (by either buying a new insert or doing the chairmat mod) and putting a cover over the pad and mounting them to wood. Any opinions or advice on this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. Money is not a problem here, I'm just looking for the most effective mod for two ignitions. Also, if this helps, I'm playing on carpet (thin).

What is the best way that you guys and girls have discovered to stop a pad from slipping?

has anyone heard anything about the PS2 DDR IGNITION DANCE PADS V2.0/2.5 by Hydralair? is it worth the money?? i saw 2 on ebay with a starting bid of only 21.99. The seller has really good feedback, everyone says that the products were exactly how they were described. I want an ignition pad, but i dont want to spend 100 bucks for the redoctane.

uhhhh......i'd say tape it down with masking tape, do the placemat mod (on first page i think), or bolt it down to a plywood board. they all work but i'd go with the place mat mod and the plywood mod for least slipping. it also increases the pad's life.

Ok, so i've got a decision to make. I've got it narrowed down to two pads that i want to buy. The BNS DX-Extreme and the LevelSix Deluxe DDR mat Ver 3.1 Anyone know where there is a good review about these? Or does anyone have one of these that can say how long they lasted. They are pretty much the same price ($48.95 and $45.95) and i can only buy 1. Any suggestions?

I feel compelled to post something about $30 RO Ignition imitations.

I bought 2 of these with hard foam around Christmas and they completely suck. They are over-sensitive, and the down arrow is malfunctional on both. The left and down arrows activate each other at random and stepping just about anywhere on the pad will trigger an arrow even with Controller turned off in dance options.

The BNS DX and Level Six v3.1 are good ignition pads. The make is pretty sturdy if you take care of it and it has the "hard" foam. BNS has surface that is plastic/sticky to feet feeling, while level six has the more slippery/nylon surface. Other than that, they aren't too different. If ya want a really good buy on ignition pads, check out vortz v3.1 pads. They are like levelsix pads and have had very good feedback from those who got it.

From what I read about chairmat mod, it was for the pads with 1/2in inserts. To prevent the inside from moving alot, they inserted a chairmat or something sturdy and big enough to fill in the gap. As for pads with 1in inserts like v2.0+, its may be harder to attempt. The foam takes up all the space inside. The ones with "soft" foam on the other hand, easily compresses and allows for more movement inside. So pads like RO, BNS, levelsix, ebay(vortzgame) v3.0+ offer the "hard" foam. The foam is very firm and fits snuggly inside. Personally, I like the "hard" foam for its feel when I play ddr. I did notice if you don't flatten the inside sheet properly, the "hard" foam kinda causes tears at creases. The hard foam can be found at RO, BNS, Levelsix(cheapest I know of)..

If you have success doing the tommygun mod, that'll prob help more with the longevitiy of the pad.
