Have you ever talked to someone who claims that they are the "master" of DDR........on the controller??
Does this equal DDR skill on the pad, or are the two in seperate ballparks?
Personally, I don't understand how people can enjoy playing with the controller because it takes away the whole aspect of "dancing." Does the controller help with learning steps or beats?

I thought dancing was different then moving your thumbs E19.gif

As someone who plays frequently with the PS2 controller, I can say that I wouldn't be at nearly the level I am at at the arcade without playing on the controller. I don't know exactly what it helps with but it does help. For example, I couldn't pass Xenon on Extreme for anything for a long time. When Max2 USA came out I played Xenon a bunch of times, and then the next time I went to the arcade I passed it my first try with a C.

at first, the hard part about ddr is learning how to move the right way. After that, the hard part is 'reading' the arrows. Playing w/ the PS2 controller helps you to read the arrows quicker and more accurately. Once you can AA a song like Rhythm and Police with your thumbs, and as long as you know how to move the right way on the dance pad, ddr becomes very fun....then you move onto the interesting stuff like freestyle. Personally, i've made about 9 ddr videos, my favorite being Midnite Blaze.

Well, whenever I play w/ the controller, it means I'm bored at home! E15.gif But when I do play, I use my right index and right middle fingers while I play. It helps me understand the steps better and I pretend I play IIDX. laugh.gif I do way better on the controller.

I agree with heavy after I learned how to move i.e Crossovers quarter notes galups what ever and so on I had trouble readin arrows, so when I found a song I couldnt pass I would get it for StepMania and play it over and over with my fingers until I hated it, after a while you will notice that you can read arrows very easy and pass songs easier because you can read steps. Still controllers are NOT EVNE CLOSE to playing with your feet

The controller is very essential to some people when playing ddr. For me i use it to master the "speed" of the harder songs because sometimes when ur on the dance pad the arrows seem to move alot faster then when ur on a controller. I remember playing Max300 and failing heavy so many times because i couldnt see the harder parts. Picked up a controller for like 30 minutes and finally beat it on my pad.

I guess you could say it helps to build memorization. People do still have fun on the controller because its not eye-foot coordination they work on itst he eye-hand and its like that rapper game back on the psx when u pressed a certain combinations of buttons to make the little cartoon dude rap. Same concept.

Controller play helps you read the steps and work out what the steps are and what you have to do...without the mechanical issue of actually getting your feet to those steps.

However, you're useless if you can't pad it up E10.gif

I use controller whenever I have stuff I want to unlock, If i want to learn the steps to a song, or if I want to play for a long time. My home ddr pads are crap, and the only time I use them is if I have friends over and they all want to play ddr, plus my second pad broke so no more doubles or versus... So if I ever want to play pad I'll just go down to the arcade...and my pads have crap response so playing StepMania on the computer isn't worth it. Basically if I'm at home, I'm probably using a controller. It's too much of a hassle to get my pads out and such, and I can't play harder songs on my pads because they slip and stuff... I need to buy some metal pads.. So i'm stuck doing songs I already can do, and that gets boring.... So I figure, pads at arcade, and controller at home... When max came out on ps2, I played max 300 non stop for a few days, went to the arcade and beat it with a B, so it does help learn steps. I think I'm just rambling now..

I use the controller when I'm very, very, very tired and don't want to stop playing DDR. They are two separate ballparks, if you ask me. Using the controller requires less energy (then again, I'm horrendously out of shape), and I think it's easier, because no way in hell could I achieve a AA on Max 300 with the mat like I can with the controller.

Controller is fun, it's nice to AAA things with it. :D

But besides that, it really does help you get down the rythms of songs.

It also does take some skill, there are people out there that are really good on controller and others that really REALLY suck. Ultramix is a great example of this. :x

That little cartoon dude's name was Parappa! laugh.gif Great description. (I'm not laughing at you.)

I play on the controller because its fun in a Beatmania kind of way and because it helps with my timing. Foot or thumb I still have to press the buttons the same way and at the same times to achieve a AAA. And then theres Max. (period) erm.gif

Not that my response is much different from everyone else's, but I have to say that using a controller and playing either an official home version or Step Mania has greatly improved my ability on a pad.

When I play DDR for longer than a few songs, it's officially become a workout for me. Which means I usually end up showering afterwards and it's my substitute for going to the gym. But there are plenty of times I just want to play DDR for the fun of the game and not get sweaty, tired and use up all that energy. I find playing on a controller helps my rhythm, tempo, arrow reading, Oni playing and PA ability to name a few things.

Just recently, thanks to a controller, I've been able to score higher in songs like LOM, Paranoia Survivor and So Deep to name a few. My PA has gotten a lot better and the best part is, I can play Oni courses like Legend Road and while I can't pass it with a Battery Bar yet, I can pass it just fine with a controller on the Life Bar mode in SM. I have no prayer of passing that Oni course anytime soon in the arcade, but I can play it all day long at home, on a controller and still enjoying it all the same.

my PA is HORRIBLY low most of the time on a controller. i get so many greats on it its not even funny. imo, its like a different game all together when you play on a controller.
