how do you guys improve? im always ending up with the same scores, sometimes better but always get back at me. what do you guys do? ill give you an idea of what i do:
-i play 2 or 3 times at home
-i play in the arcade once a week only because its far from my house
-in pc, i play in sm diff. 5, i get same scores, sometimes better
-at arcade, im always attacking the same songs for a AAA
-in ddr ex. i use practice mode always with handclaps for an idea of what to do
-pad i use is a soft pad, completely modded. i opened up the pad and covered the censors for the x, o, etc. with paper. i also use pad cover. i play in socks.
thanks for your help |

I'm also a beginner and what I do to improve is go into training mode and work on new songs. When I get into doing 8 step songs I noticed I was really bad at crossovers and often tried to double step everything. I like Rhythm & Police so I went into training mode and started doing that on a lower speed (started on 2 or 3) until I got the hang of all the crossovers.. then turned up the speed and kept going til I could do well that way until I could pass it consistently on normal speed. I play for 2-3 hours a day every day at home and once or twice a week at the arcade, although there I usually don't try to do really hard songs for me until my last song. Just practice, practice, practice. Push yourself and it will come. If you don't challenge yourself you won't improve. |

training mode is your best friend. if its too fast, slow down the speed, you'll get there. _________________

well i have been playing ddr since last november and i have found several things that helped me. Playing at the arcade other than only on console helps alot using metal pads and stuff but like getting better at ddr isnt only about how long you play its all about how often you play. i play more often now than i did when i started and i can pass 10 fters and stuff but like just keep playing. |

i totaly agree. Faster songs like captain jack, afronova and max 300/ledgend of the max, are good songs to learn fast and double steps. Keep in mind though get a second player with you that can do the songs so you have a chance to see the whole song and not just part. I learned R3, on trick/standard that way and thats also a good way to learn any song actually. Plus with a secon person doing it with you you waist less tokens/money failing. Simple and obvious yet it works. memmorisation and skills are hand in hand in this topic. _________________

Okay the thing that I'm having trouble with is those crazy steps at the final run in Orion .78 CM, you know the ones where there is no break until the end. Some of the have my feet in all weird and wacky positions that make me almost trip lol. I also need help on some of those parts where the arrows are in triplets but in jumps such as
LEFT RIGHT
LEFT
LEFT DOWN
UP RIGHT
UP
UP LEFt
or something like that in 3 fast beats.
Any advice?
I can usually get a B on Orion as I barely get through the last run lol |

I'm having trouble with crossovers. What are some good songs I can do practice them? I've been doing Burning Heat... but I've done that song so much now it's like I memorized it. If I do a new song with a cross over in it, I don't grasp that cross over because I haven't did the song yet. I can actually do the cross over fine when I face to the left, but I can't do the crossovers facing to the right for the life of me. I only have DDRMAX2 for PS2, and I go to the arcade about 3 times a week.... any tips on some good songs? And I can only do a couple of songs on heavy mode, so I mainly can only do stuff on standard mode... |

I have something to chime in!!!!
For all you guys who use music theory to help you with this game, I have 2 things you can try out.
The first one is, to download somekind of music writing program(I have finale notepad), take the stepchart to a particular song, and then transcribe it in to notes on your music writing program. Then, you can either take your pad out and put your chart on a stand or something that will hold it there, and read it like a piece of music while listening to the program play it out how it should sound, or, you can sit down and listen to it while taping your feet to the rhythm.
The second one is, take a metronome, and a stepchart, and just read it right there. Turn on you metronome to the bpms of the song, and then just have at it.
These will increase skills of listening for quarter notes in songs, thus leading to better timing, and more perfects.
Also, to the guy who just posted:
If you have insertion, try playing the standard mode on it. There is a part where there are some good crossovers. That's probably the only song I can think of right now. _________________

try imporving ur skills by going to different skill levels and booting up the speed to 1.5
like if u get C or above on light mode, try again.
then 3rd time go to standard mode with same song, if u fail try again.
if fail again, play that song until u pass it. if u pass it go to hvy.
ok u get the picture now...hehe...
thats how i learn to play well...
anyway, ur legs will get use to playing fast songs like bout 2 weeks.(depends on how many times u play). aite i have to go now. i will post more soon... after all , im a DDRFREAK too. _________________

when i play ddr i play a heavy song that requires stamina so u can build stamina then move and play 2 standard songs to work on your pa because like jints said moving to standard improves your pa quickly and efficiently |

since i just got bored one day and was playing songs on normal mode (easist mode (not beginner)), i decided i would start trying to play songs on trick, since normal was getting very easy. then from trick i went on to heavy. i tried dynamite rave and it kinda freaked me out. so i decided to try to try to master it so i went in to training mode and put the assist on to where you can hear the handclap. try to just sit there and listen to the rhthym. try to atleast memorize the rhthym . then after i got the rhthym down, i could actually start completing the song with my feet and usually got As and Bs. after i mastered the hardest song on 1st mix (and yes I HAVE ONLY PLAYED 1ST MIX and extreme a few times ) i tried the other songs on heavy and they were no problem.

wat do ppl do when their in a slump??
i've been in one for about 6mnths, and before that my imporvement was pretty damn slow too.
it might be because i don't play as often, but still i do play about 7,8 games a week.
sometimes it can get really discouraging when u see urself not improving, while everyone else is catching up/overtaking u rapidly... |

How often do you play? If you're playing a lot and simply focusing on getting better, you might just need to take a break for a week or so. Take some time off, let the music get itself stuck back into your head, and get back to a point where the only thing you want to do is go to the arcade and play. Sometimes a good break is the best thing you can do for yourself. _________________

ill shup after this:
-max 300 and maxx
max 300 is not hard for me to beat. as a matter of fact, i have a chance of SDGing it (again). but one problem kinda prevents me from AAAing it. in heavy, right after the first freeze jumps, theres a little pause. then, it goes back. can anyone tell me a way to get a perfect at that point? i count to 3 seconds right after the freezes register, but its a bit longer.
also in maxx, same thing but the freze arrows do not fully register. then, goes back on track after a few seconds. i count to four right arfter hitting the freeze jumps. same with max 300, its longer than 4 seconds. i
know practice, but in the arcade, it gets me so much. i know practice, but in the arcade, it gets me so much. ive been getting greats in max 300 and NGs in maxx too much now. all i asking overall is your technique on doing these parts that may help me as well.
appreciate your help |

Does any else here hate the metal pads in the arcade? cause i know i do.
i own the import version of extreme for my ps2 and can AA almost every light, most standard, and some heavy songs such as:Light-burnin the floor
Standard-theme from space door maco (y'know, that song by a.s.a.? yea that one)
Heavy-love love shine.
But when i try these songs in the arcade... i screw up and D everything!!
seeing that it was only the second--third time i ever played on the arcade version, i started to notice that my feet were either stomping the wrong place on the pad (hitting the metal parts instead) or i wasn't hitting the arrows hard enough! GRRR!!! I DISLIKE YOU PAD OF METAL!!
anyway... I could really use some advice or... (damn! out of synonyms!)
well... advice on playing on the pad at the arcades before i humiliate myself any further. |

I have spent the last several months making the transition from being able to pass anything (except PSM and PSMO) at home to playing in the arcade. The first thing to remember is that the perfect window on the PS and PS2 home versions is big enough to drive a truck through. Honestly, I would estimate it to be about 3 to 4 times bigger than the arcade. It also seems that the timing is different, as in at the arcade, you have to step sooner than on the home versions. So, if you're just starting at the arcade, take it easy. Pick a fun song that you know well and is 2 or 3 feet below your high level, and play that. It'll help you get the feel for what's going on with the arcade.

If you are used to playing on a soft pad, and are reasonably small and/or weak-legged, you might need to get used to the extra weight associated with playing wearing shoes. Also, the spacing on the arcade pads (despite what any manufacturer or anyone else will say) is slightly "larger" than home pads, meaning that you actually have to move your foot farther to hit the appropriate arrow. This is both because of the spacing and because the arrows on an arcade are depressed in comparison to the other panels on an arcade pad (which you cannot find on any home pad. And, it is possible that the arcade you were at simply had poorly maintained arrows (unfortunately all too common).
My ultimate advice, then, is this. Don't expect to do as well at the arcade, and if at the arcade, forget all the scores and standards you normally can play to on the home version, because there really is no basis for comparison. Play a lot at the arcade, as it is really a large adjustment, even from metal pads and a home version, and accept that you are going to "be worse" for a time. Oh, and most importantly, have fun.[/quote] _________________
