Maybe an already answer'd question... [please make an FAQ at the beginning of the post].
Is Modified 3rd Party Pad better than DX Style pad [such as Red Octane]??
-Which has longer lives...
-Which will break down first [as in Ghost and Non-Responsive Steps]?
Please PM me the answer or post here [better to PM for fast reply =p]

I've suggested these pads to many people here and those who got it were very satisfied. It has the same foam BNS and RO pads but surface resemble that of Mymybox. The seller is very reliable and the pads are new.
If you really don't trust ebay, I would go with a BNS over RO. Both of these pads have pretty good quality, so BNS would be the better buy.
I can assure you, vortzgame seller will not rip you off, and is the best buy for an ignition pad(s) on the market. I'm not an affliliate with the seller, but the price is just unbeatable to any other vendor how can I not suggest it? I'd buy one myself when my ignition pads die (I hope they don't soon). |
I bought my pad from Vortz. It's just like the one pictured except it's for Xbox so the top has a different design. It's works awesome. |

For those with Vortz pads (or others in the know):
Has anyone, or would anyone recommend, chairmat or plywood
modded their Vortz pad? Or is it good enough quality that you really
don't need to worry about that.
This is my second experience with soft pads -- the first set were
actually a "knock-off" ignition, and so they pretty much sucked, and
I pretty much chewed them up in no time. I'm trying to avoid a
repeat of the same situation, as soft pads are SOOO much better
for portability purposes. Oh yeah, plus they cost about 1/10th the
amount a Cobalt Flux would.

I read in the past that chairmat mod can work for ignition pads. The mod will allow you to play with your shoes but I dunno about increasing the durability of the pad significantly. I play with my ignition just as it is, no mods. The only things I actually did to my pad was use duct tape to address the tears inside and secured the cord from moving too much. |

My Vortz pads are standing up to 8 and 9 footers beautifully right now, but it's only been a couple days. I'm on a mid-depth carpet, and they migrate a bit. It's really not a big deal unlses the chaos is just whack on a song, or you're playing doubles. For doubles, I duct tape them together and it's fine.
To be fair, I don't play with shoes or even socks. It's all barefoot action.
As far as I can tell, Vortz = Rebranded RO. I strongly suspect it's the same idea as Marshalls, or maybe RO just charges for the brand name and their longer warranty (30 vs 5 days I think). In any case, I am perfectly and totally happy with the pads. |

On my birthday, I am probably going to get a metal pad, or if I am impatient an ignition. Also a new usb converter (2 plugs). But right now I am just trying to keep my pads from breaking. My new soft pad's cord is splitting, and my old one is going to be modded soon, it's been crap for awhile now. _________________

Help! My new Naki pad is terrible! I've modded it like all my other soft pads, with plywood on the bottom and a think plastic curtain over the top, bolted down. It's getting phantom steps worse than the worn out Konami pad I replaced! I've used Naki before and got a few months out of it, but this one is terrible out of the box. It's got the stupid LEDs in the controler interface on the pad, and the worst arrow seems to be the up one. Has anyone else had bad experiences with this model? I'm tempted to try to return it for a refund towards a RedOctane. Any and all help is much appreciated! |

uhh.......i don't have a soft pad and won't get one soon cuz i love the metals and hate movement of the pads.....but from what i've learned i think your plastic curtain thing is pressing down on the arrows. if u bolted it down above the pad and had a plywood thing below it it's kinda squeezed there dontcha think? well those are my thoughts..... |

The plastic covering is thin, maleable, and not pulled to tight. I've had great success with this mod before. Inspecting the pad more closely, I think the foam inside is a little bunched up along where it was originally folded, so I'm trying to gently work it flatter. I went and danced on it for another hour, and it has improved some. This really makes me appreciate the quality of Konami's current soft pad model, though. The Naki one I have, even without the phantom stepping issue, is no where near as accurate or reliable. Sometimes the timing seems fine, sometimes it seems totally off, even when playing the same songs consecutively. I guess you get what you pay for. Once this one goes, I might seriously consider an Ignition 2.0 or a metal pad if I can scrape together enough money to blow on something like that, heh. Do Ignition pads need to be moded (bolted down) or should they be left as is for maximum performance and longevity? Does anyone sell replacement foam inserts for the Ignition pads should they wear out? |

i think BNS sells replacement foam inserts for its Ultra DX pad and other ignition pads. Redoctane should too. i don't know if you should use the chairmat mod on ignition pads but i still think you could bolt the pad down onto a plywood board. i don't know exactly though so don't hold me to that... |

The cheapest vendor I've seen for foam inserts is levelsix for $10 + shipping.
There is some sort of mod for ignition pad, but the link posted on the first page of this topic isn't working anymore. I guess its a variation of the chair mat that helps reduce wear and tear by restricting the amount of space the pad can move. I just left my ignition pads as is.

Decent ignition pad can range from $40 x2 ebay(so $20 each) to $100 RedOctane. |

Previous posts I dug up:
Several mods done for a CG Ignition pad:
RyukumuIsora wrote: | Just thought I'd give an update too.
All rightey, so for those of you who haven't heard my rantings, I'm using two CG Ignitions with the celotex/wooden board/chairmat mods. To hopefully prevent the known flaw with the pad cord dying after being used on a PS2, I'm also using a controller extension cable on each pad so that, if anything, the plug on the extension cable dies and not the real cable. Here's a report on how each mod is holding up.
Celotex: At first I thought this mod was totally useless once the insulatoin boards already started breaking, but the thing does serve one purpose: It takes up space. The foam, celotex, and chairmat fit snugly into the CG pad's zip-up compartment, so the pad keeps its shape perfectly. Can't say it's the most useful mod from my experiance, but it doesn't hurt. Cost of this mod: ~$8 for insulation and duct tape for two pads.
Wooden board: I have each CG pad velcro'd to a wooden board that works as a hard surface fo the pad to rest on (ie: the pad responds better than on carpet). Had to hot-glue the velcro to the bottom of the pad as the velcro adhesive wouldn't bond well, but no problem. I also have the two boards literally LATCHED together so they don't separate during doubles. They can be un-latched for storage/transportation. When latched, these suckers do NOT separate at all. The whole assembly will still shift on the carpet by an inch or two, but that's not bad so long as Doubles are still possible. Not a bad mod. Cost of mod: ~9 for wooden board, ~10 for velcro (I overbought, you don't need to buy this much), ~3 for duct tape, ~6 for two sets of latches, for a total of $28 for two pads.
Chairmat: If you have an Ignition pad and get ghost arrows, you MUST do this mod. It's a little pricey depending on what chairmat you buy (I bought the cheapest ones and they were $16 per mat), but these make the pad very, VERY accurate. I'm doing 8 footers and Catas with almost no missed steps because of a malfunction (I miss steps because I screw up ;;. A little pricey, but very much worth it. Cost: $32 for two mats, one per pad.
Extension cable: As I said before, this was a crazy idea I got to prevent the CG cables from dying when plugged/unplugged too much from the PS2 ports. I haven't been DDRing all that consistently, but the cables still work (when I do DDR, I usually go nuts for like three days straight then rest for a week). So far so good! I'm using a Mad Catz extension cable for one pad, then a no-name 3rd party extension for the other. Cost: $8 for Mad Catz, $4 for no-name for a total of $12.
Initial cost of 2 CG pads including shipping: $50.
Total cost of modding materials for two pads: $80.
Having some frickin' awesome DDR pads for home: Priceless. |
wumpus wrote: |
The chair mat mod is intended for pads which have zippered openings and replaceable inserts.. what you do is cut the chair mat to size with the tin snips (the plastic is really heavy and hard to cut), then put the cut chair mat on top of the foam insert that normally comes with the pad. Works great! See earlier comments in this thread for more info.
HOWEVER, if you have a pad which is sealed (eg no zipper), the chair mat mod is only good for putting down on carpet, then putting the pads on top of the chair mats as-is.. you can then duct tape the pad to the chair mat. I've read about a couple people doing that. |
Note: A CG Ignition has 0.5" "soft" foam, allowing the fitting of additional materials within the pad. It would be difficult to apply with newer pads with 1" foam. I think the dense/"hard" foam help addressed the problem.
An attempt to save a dieing or dead pad.

The only way to fix the pads if they're that far gone is going to involve opening them up.
1. Flip the pads over, so the grey smushy stuff is up.
2. Cut around the edge of the gray smushy layer ONLY with a good pair of scissors. You want to cut as close to the green border as possible, but don't mess up the stitching of the green border. You don't need to actually cut off the grey layer, you can leave the top attached.
3. Fold up the grey layer so that you can see the bottom layer of cellophane and metal grids. If anything is ripped or torn, repair it as best you can, using clear packing tape. Only tape to the side that doesn't have the contacts.
4. If the foam between the two layers of grids is fairly well destroyed, you'll just have to get a new pad. The only way to fix that would be to tear out all of the foam, cut holes in the grey smushy stuff, and use that as a replacement for the foam. (I've never tried this. I think it would be difficult)
5. If you can see or suspect that the other layer of clear plastic has sustained damage as well, you'll want to get to it by cutting the first clear plastic layer and the foam enough so that you can fold them up, the same way as the grey smushy stuff.
6. Repair the second layer of clear plastic the same way as the first, being sure to only tape on the side that doesn't have the metal contacts.
7. fold each layer back into place, taping each one to the green strip with something secure (aka duct tape)
8. At this point, if you want, you can remove the grey smushy stuff permanently and do a plywood mod. This has several advantages and a couple disadvantages, as I've described in a post a few pages back. Absolutely don't remove the grey stuff unless you plan to do a permanent plywood mod immediately.
9. Good luck and enjoy. |
A repair guide regarding the control box of a RO Ignition pad here.
This is the closest thing I found about attempting to address the moving raised arrow insert problem...
Outcome wrote: | Well, the problem began when my "raised pad" part (Piece of foam or something above the arrow" began to slip and mess me up, so I cut it open and moved arrow back into place... slipped AGAIN. So I open it up, and the thin plastic sensor part for the down arrow is ravaged, when I close it with duct tape, the down arrow no longer registers ANYTHING.

I'm still looking around for one, but probably TX-1000, I heard those were pretty good.
Next Saturday, I'm going to Lowes to buy some stuff to mod theold pad I have, only way to save it now. I have been playing doubles often now, and it just doesn't feel as nice as it used to, compared to my feathery soft pad . It's comfy! _________________

I have a quick question that I am sure is really obvious regarding the vortz pad- are they compatable with the Playstation One as well as PS2? My gut says yes, and I realize that it is compatable with the psx game, but I just want to make sure before I bid. I don't have a ps2 and really haven't kept with with the compatability issues with controllers. Thanks to anyone who can answer! |

All pads are PSX/PS2. Can you imagine how much of a pain analog steps would be? |
